There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone before someone said somewhat awkwardly, "Changming, how are you feeling? Um... could you perhaps end your vacation and come back to help deliver packages for a few days?"
"Is the station busy right now? It's not even peak season yet," I asked, puzzled. I had thought Huang Haitao was calling me to offer me a job catching ghosts and exorcising evil spirits, but it turned out he wanted me to go back and deliver packages.
"It's not that busy, it's just... Xiao Deng called me this morning and said he needs to take some time off. There's no one to deliver your route for the time being. I asked the other deliverymen, and they all said they're busy with farming these days and can't spare the time to run two routes," Huang Haitao said slowly.
"Oh, I see. Okay, I'll be right there." I agreed, then, remembering something, I asked, "Mr. Huang, do you know why Xiao Deng took leave?"
"I'm not entirely sure, but Xiao Yin said he seems to be injured and needs to take some time off," Huang Haitao said.
"Okay, Mr. Huang, I'll be right there. Bye." I hung up the phone and rode my electric scooter out the door.
When I arrived at the courier station, Zhong Lingui and several others were sorting packages.
"Hey, Changming, didn't you say you took leave?" Feng Enbin looked at me curiously and asked.
"I took leave. The courier station is too busy, and Deng Xiaohong also took leave. I was dragged back by Boss Huang." I glared at Feng Enbin and the others and said irritably.
"Well...hehe, you know, it's been busy with farming lately, and we're all too busy at home." Feng Enbin awkwardly scratched his head.
"Do you know what happened to Deng Xiaohong?" I asked Zhong Lingui, who was standing next to me, in a low voice.
“I heard he was in a car accident last night.” Zhong Lingui shook her head, then seemed to remember something and said uncertainly, “I saw him this morning. His face was bandaged, and he was limping. And his car was intact; it didn’t look like it had been in an accident. It was like…”
Zhong Lingui stopped talking abruptly, which made me incredibly curious, so I quickly pressed her for an answer, "Like what?"
Zhong Lingui glanced at everyone, then lowered his voice and said, "Judging from his injuries, if he wasn't beaten up, he must have fallen from a height."
I frowned, then remembered the thief from last night, and my eyes widened. Could it be him?
Deng Xiaohong looks very humble and shouldn't provoke those thugs. Ever since he came to my house yesterday, a thief broke into my house last night. What a coincidence!
What I don't understand is, what exactly did he come to my house for?
Do you want to enter my living room?
That's right, it must be, otherwise it just doesn't make sense. Yesterday when I said that was my family's living room, he seemed very interested. Considering Deng Xiaohong's concealed identity, it seems like it's probably him.
"Eternal light".
"Changming?" Zhong Lingui nudged me with her elbow when she saw me in a daze.
"Oh, what did you say?" I snapped out of my daze and asked instinctively.
"You're staring blankly, are you alright?" Zhong Lingui asked, puzzled.
"It's nothing, what could possibly happen? Let's get back to work." I smiled and lowered my head to get back to work.
After finishing work, it was already two o'clock in the afternoon. When I got home, I saw my fifth grandfather resting in the yard. Thinking about the thief last night, I sat down next to him. "Fifth grandfather, aren't you going to take a nap at noon today?"
"You're awake," Fifth Grandfather replied casually.
"Fifth Grandfather, what did that thief look like last night? Did he have long hair or short hair?" I asked.
"It was too dark, and I couldn't see his face clearly. He had short hair and was tall and thin," Fifth Grandfather said slowly, squinting his eyes.
"What is there to steal from our house? Don't thieves bribe anyone these days?"
"Who knows? I heard a noise, so I got up to check, and I just happened to see him sneaking towards the inner room," Fifth Grandfather said slowly, shifting into a more comfortable sleeping position.
My eyes narrowed as I looked towards the inner room. Wasn't that the hallway? And she was tall and thin with short hair. All the evidence pointed to Deng Xiaohong.
A sudden surge of anger welled up inside me. Ever since Deng Xiaohong came to the courier station, she's been like a venomous snake, staring at me and making me feel uncomfortable all over.
If my birthday weren't so close, I would love to find him right now, tear off his disguise, and ask him what he's really up to.
But let's wait until after my birthday to talk about it.
