Chapter 15 The Last Package

"Lili, the so-called 'yin illness' refers to encountering something unclean, or to put it simply, being haunted by a ghost," Xu Dalong said, pursing his lips.

I've heard my grandfather say the same thing: Yin diseases are usually caused by evil spirits. If you get this kind of disease, the hospital can't find anything wrong. But if you don't find a way to solve it, your Yang energy will get weaker and weaker over time, and you won't be far from death.

"Pfft!"

An Lili chuckled, then quickly covered her mouth with her hand and whispered, "Xu Dalong, when did you learn to make up stories? And you have no skill at all. Don't tell me you can cure him by finding a Taoist priest or sorcerer to perform a ritual. What would be the point of big hospitals then? It's the 21st century now. Your theory of ghosts and gods is what my grandmother used to say. It's not popular now."

"You don't believe me?" Xu Dalong jumped up like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, and said urgently, "Everything I said is true. If you don't believe me, you can ask Zuo Changming. His grandfather used to be a ghost catcher. Ask him if he believes me."

Upon hearing this, An Lili turned to me and asked, "Brother Changming, do you believe it?"

"Uh..." I awkwardly scratched my head, remembering the deceased Ma Jiajie, and said seriously, "There is such a saying."

“But it’s obvious you’re in cahoots with Xu Dalong. I’m not talking to you anymore, let’s get to work.” After saying that, An Lili buried herself in her work.

By 9:30 a.m., I had already loaded the packages for my route onto my electric scooter. My first priority was to finish delivering the packages on my route, and then I would come back to help Zhong Lingui deliver the packages on his route.

There aren't many packages today. If nothing goes wrong, I estimate it won't be dark before I finish delivering them, but there's one condition: the electric scooter must have a charge.

I've been asking Zhang Guangyin to replace the battery in my electric bike, but he's always made excuses to refuse. However, I accidentally found out that Zhang Guangyin has already given the bill to his brother-in-law, and I guess he's already deducted the money and spent it. Now that we're having a fight, I can forget about getting the battery. I'm already thankful that he's not making excuses to deduct my wages.

"Damn it, I'll just pay for a new one myself. I'm the one riding this bike anyway, so I can finish my deliveries sooner and get home earlier to avoid running into those unclean things again." I thought to myself, gritted my teeth, and decided to pay for a new one myself.

Without hesitation, I rode my electric bike to a repair shop and haggled with the repairman for a while before finally getting a new set of Chaowei batteries for a hefty price of 480 yuan. According to the repairman, the batteries would be able to run at least 45 kilometers.

After changing the battery, I started delivering my packages. I knew this route very well, and I even arranged the packages in order. By the time I finished delivering all the packages on my route, it was already 12:30 pm.

When I got home, my fifth grandfather had already sold all the pork and was taking a nap in the rocking chair in the yard, snoring loudly. I didn't disturb him, so I quietly went into the kitchen, ate a simple lunch, and then set off for the courier station.

I've traveled the Zhonglingui route a few times, but I'm not very familiar with those small villages. Fortunately, there aren't many packages this time, so I estimate I can finish delivering them before dark.

When I arrived at the courier station, it was already 1:20 PM. I loaded the package onto the vehicle and set off at 2:00 PM.

Because I wasn't very familiar with the small villages along the route from Daping Village to Shizi Village, I spent most of my time looking for packages. Luckily, no one called me to send any packages today. Finally, around 5:30 PM, I finished delivering the packages along the Zhonglingui route. By the time I got back to the traffic light intersection, the sun was almost setting. I didn't dare look at the spot where Ma Jiajie had stood last night. After the green light came on, I rode my electric bike to the courier station. According to the schedule, I would clock out and go straight home, and it probably wouldn't get dark until I was halfway home.

I returned to the courier station and was about to clock out when An Lili rushed over and stopped me.

"Brother Changming, wait a minute."

I looked puzzled and asked, "What's wrong? I've finished my deliveries and I'm about to clock out!"

"I'm sorry, Brother Changming, I made a mistake today. You still have a package to Mawu Village that hasn't been delivered yet," An Lili said apologetically, holding a package in her hand.

"It's getting dark, how about we deliver it tomorrow?" I really didn't want to deliver it anymore. I was on my way to Mawu Village, and I figured it would be dark by the time I got back.

"No, I've already entered it into the system, and it's showing as being delivered. The recipient just called the station, and Station Master Zhang said you're on your way." An Lili handed the package to me, saying urgently.

I heard her say that Zhang Guangyin already knew, so I had no choice but to run this deal. Otherwise, given how much hatred Zhang Guangyin harbored towards me, he would definitely fine me several hundred yuan.

"Okay, I'll deliver it now." I glanced at the package in my hand, wondering what was inside, why the rush.

It's not really his fault. Every online shopper, no matter what they buy, is eager to receive it.

“Okay, you go first. I’ll send your contact information to your phone.” After saying that, An Lili walked towards the computer.

There was no contact information on the package; it was hidden.

I put the package on my electric scooter and rode away. As I left, I saw Zhang Guangyin's gloomy face. I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. If I had chosen not to deliver it, Zhang Guangyin would have used it as an excuse to fine me even without the recipient complaining.

When I arrived at the traffic light intersection, it was already getting dark. After the green light came on, I didn't look around and just focused on getting to my destination. On the way, I heard my phone beeping with a text message. I didn't need to look to know it was from An Lili.

I have already checked the address on the package: Zhugenzi Village, Mawu Village Committee.

In order to save time, I didn't dare to stop for a moment and rode the electric bike as fast as I could towards my destination.

As I passed An Lili's house, the lights were already on, and the door was tightly shut. Not far past her house, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw that An Lili's grandmother had somehow appeared on the side of the road, looking in the direction I had left, with a strange smile on her face. I was startled, goosebumps rose all over my body, and I almost fell over. I cursed inwardly, "That stupid old woman, why doesn't she stay at home? What's she doing running around every night?"

I arrived at No. 24 Zhugenzi Village. It was a single-story flat-roofed house. The exterior was not yet decorated, the door was tightly closed, and the lights were on inside.

I took out my phone and saw the text message from An Lili. I opened it and dialed the number. The phone rang for a while before being answered. Because I was in a hurry, I said urgently before the other person could speak, "Hello, I am a post office courier. Your package has arrived. Please open the door and sign for it."

"Okay." A hoarse voice came from the phone.

After a while, the door opened. I didn't see anyone inside, so I took the package and went in. Delivering packages to the door is the service motto of our post office courier service.

When I entered, there was a large hall with lights on, but no one was there. Just as I was about to ask something, I heard a swishing sound. Before I could react, I felt my body tighten, my vision went black, and then a burning pain shot through my body.
