Pang Meilian looked at me with gratitude and said, "Brother Zuo, then I'll leave it to you. Call us if anything comes up, and let us know in advance what you need to prepare."
"Okay, I'll go find him when I get home tonight. I'm going home now." I glanced at my watch; it was almost eight o'clock. I told them what happened and rode off on my electric scooter.
I clocked out at the courier station and rushed home without stopping. When I got to the traffic light intersection, I couldn't help but glance at the place where Ma Jiajie had been last night.
Strangely, I didn't see Ma Jiajie tonight, and I secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Ever since I saw Ma Jiajie at this traffic light intersection, every time I pass by here, I feel a chill, as if I'm being watched by something.
I calmed myself down and continued riding back. The electric bike was still comfortable to ride with power. Before long, I returned to Liuluo Village. As usual, I got off the bike and found a wooden stick. But the three vicious dogs still hadn't appeared tonight. Could they have been bought by dog dealers?
After arriving at Liuluo Village Committee, I did not go directly back to Dafeng Village, but went to Luguchong Village, because Hu Ergou lived there.
When I arrived at Hu Ergou's house, it was already nine o'clock at night. Hu Ergou's house was a two-story red brick house, much better than my house. In terms of fame, Hu Ergou was not even worthy of carrying my grandfather's shoes. However, Hu Ergou was the kind of person who would take on any job as long as he had money, unlike my grandfather, who didn't care about the affairs of other villages except for the affairs of the villagers of Dafeng Village Committee.
"Uncle Hu, are you asleep?" I knocked on the door and called out.
"Who is it?" A young man's voice came from inside the house. The door creaked open, and a young man in a yellow shirt glanced at me and said, "Zuo Xia... Zuo Changming, what brings you here so late at night?"
“Hu Tudao, I’m not looking for you, I’m looking for your dad,” I said, and squeezed past the young man.
"Hey, Zuo Changming, what's wrong? Tell me what's going on. What my dad knows, I can basically do too," Hu Tudao said, following behind me, chattering on and on.
I know Hu Tudao better than anyone. He's three years younger than me, dropped out of school after junior high, and hangs out with all sorts of shady characters every day. He was even sentenced to several months in prison for theft. To be honest, I really don't like him.
When I was little, Hu Ergou would go around bragging about how learned he was, and he gave his son a name that sounded scholarly, with the surname Hu, meaning "there are Taoist magics on the road."
However, I heard that after his release from prison, he changed a lot. He followed his father around doing religious ceremonies, helped out, and received a lot of red envelopes. He was living a very comfortable life.
When Hu Tu was in junior high school, his classmates from town blocked his way home, and I was the one who helped him out.
"Where's your dad?" I walked into Hu Ergou's living room, but didn't see him. I turned to Hu Tudao and asked.
"He's in the study!" Hu Tudao said, pointing to a small door at the far end of the hall.
I went inside, knocked gently on the door, and said, "Uncle Hu, are you asleep? It's me, Zuo Changming."
"It's Changming. The door's unlocked. Come in. It's so late. What do you need me for?" Hu Ergou's voice came from inside the room.
I pushed open the door and went into the room. I saw Hu Ergou fiddling with something on his desk. I didn't look closely and said softly, "Uncle Hu, I've come to see you this time because I have a favor to ask."
"Sit down, Changming. Just say what's on your mind. Don't take offense. I even received guidance from your grandfather back then." Hu Ergou put down his calligraphy brush, pointed to the chair beside him, and said slowly.
I sat down next to Hu Ergou and glanced at the table. I saw that Hu Ergou was drawing talismans, and I recognized most of them. They were the same talismans that my grandfather taught me to draw when I was a child.
"Uncle Hu, I've encountered something evil and would like to ask for your help." I explained the purpose of my visit to Hu Ergou.
"Changming, your grandfather is a renowned and powerful figure. Did he really not teach you anything? How come some evil spirits dare to haunt you?" Hu Ergou glanced at me and asked.
“Uncle Hu, Grandpa only taught me how to draw these symbols, he didn’t teach me anything else,” I said earnestly.
Actually, Hu Ergou had contacted me a long time ago. Almost every year, he would go to my house to offer incense to my grandfather and often ask me about things in the industry. But I really didn't know anything. I just told him about the talismans my grandfather taught me to draw. Later, he told me that these talismans were just for show and were completely useless.
"Ah, what a pity. Your grandfather has so many skills, yet he didn't find a successor." Hu Ergou sighed, a look of disappointment on his face.
"Uncle Hu, I wonder if you would be willing to lend me a hand?" Seeing that the topic had gone astray, I brought up my purpose for tonight.
"What kind of evil thing did you encounter?" Hu Ergou put away his disappointment and asked calmly.
"It was a female ghost. She was sitting on the back of my seat last night, and the old lady at the convenience store saw her." I briefly explained what happened when I met Ma Jiajie last night.
“Well, Old Third Granny is getting old, and sometimes she can see some unclean things.” Hu Ergou tapped the table and said, “Changming, how about this, let Tudao go with you and get rid of that female ghost.”
“Uncle Hu, Tudao…” I was about to ask Hu Tudao if it was okay, but I was interrupted before I could finish my sentence.
"Brother Changming, don't worry, I've got your problem covered. I've already learned most of my dad's skills, so dealing with a little female ghost is a piece of cake." Hu Tudao suddenly walked in from the doorway, patting his chest loudly as he spoke.
“Changming, don’t underestimate Tudao. He’s not the same hoodlum he used to be. He’s been traveling all over the country with me these past two years and has learned some skills. With him handling this, there shouldn’t be any major problems.” Hu Ergou patted my shoulder and said with a relaxed expression.
I could see a hint of pride on his face, as if he were saying, "My grandfather is so amazing, I didn't learn anything from him, but his son is now a capable person who can stand on his own."
Seeing that Hu Ergou had said so, I felt embarrassed to offend him, so I nodded and said, "Alright, then I'll leave this matter to Tu Dao. I just don't want to hurt her, so I'll just send her away. As for how much it will cost, just let me know."
"Haha, Brother Changming, don't worry, I'll definitely handle things perfectly for you. As for the expenses, we're all so familiar with each other, a token amount will suffice. I'll discuss it with you in detail later." Hu Tu laughed heartily, quickly came to my side, reached out and hooked his arm around my shoulder, and said with a confident expression.
