Chapter 11 The Girl in the White Dress

Through the small rearview mirror of the electric scooter, I saw An Lili waving at me, and her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, had somehow appeared beside her, her eyes fixed on my back.

I suddenly felt like I was being watched by something, and I felt uncomfortable all over. I pressed down hard on the pedals and sped away from there.

My electric scooter is completely out of power; I'm saving the last bit of charge for lighting.

It was very dark tonight, with only a crescent moon in the sky. I rode my bike home.

Suddenly, some kind of insect crawled into my right eye, and the pain brought tears to my eyes. I completely lost my sight, but luckily I wasn't riding very fast.

I parked the car on the side of the road, took out a tissue, and kept wiping the tears streaming from my right eye.

I've had this experience before. When I was riding my bike at night, an insect flew into my eye, and it would tear up after a while.

About a minute later, the tears in my right eye stopped flowing, but the pain did not disappear.

I took out an empty bottle of mineral water, washed my right eye with the water, and dried it with a tissue. I slowly opened my eyes and found that I could see again, but the pain still hadn't gone away.

I was wondering what was going on.

Could it be that the bug that flew into my eye this time is different from the one last time?

I carefully examined my eyes, and then my expression changed drastically, because I suddenly realized that the pain was not in my right eye, but in my left eye.

What exactly is going on? Apart from the pain I experienced when I was 12 years old, my left eye has never had any symptoms.

Could it be that the irritant from that insect could reach my left eye?

But that's also unlikely.

Or perhaps, like back then, something bad will happen again?

My left eye is hurting terribly, and I don't know why. Also, my eye is stitched up, so I can't even wash it with water.

I waited by the roadside for about ten minutes before the pain in my left eye gradually subsided.

I was panting heavily, the pain from just now making me want to gouge my eyes out and wash them clean.

I rested for another ten minutes or so before riding my electric bike back home. It was almost ten o'clock by then, and I figured I wouldn't get home until after 10:30.

After riding for a while, I arrived at the traffic light intersection. My house and An Lili's house are separated from each other from here. Coming from the express station, her house turns right, while my house turns left. Then, just follow the four-meter-wide cement road for about 10 kilometers, and you will be back in our Dafeng Village.

Our Dafeng Village is a remote village. On the other side of the village, it is surrounded by several high mountains. On the way home, we have to pass through Luojia Village, Dapo Village, and Liuluo Village before we reach Dafeng Village.

I stopped at the traffic light and waited. There were no cars on the road at that time, but I don't have the habit of running red lights. I took out my phone and played on it while waiting.

"Hey buddy, can you solicit customers?"

Just then, I heard a faint voice in my ear.

After 10 o'clock, there are basically no pedestrians at this intersection. How could someone suddenly be waiting for a car here? And when I was waiting for the red light, I also looked around and didn't see any pedestrians.

I put down my phone and looked to my left. I saw a girl in a white dress standing about two meters away from me.

The girl was very young, probably around 20 years old, with long hair and bangs that almost covered her eyes. Because of the darkness, I couldn't see her eyes clearly. Her face was very pale, a bloodless white, and she was carrying a red backpack on her back.

"Beautiful lady, where are you going?" I asked.

"I need to go back to Mawu Village. Can you take me back?" the girl asked, pointing in the direction behind me.

"Um, I'm sorry, my electric scooter ran out of power, and we don't go that way. I'm really sorry, I also need to get home, so I can't take you home. You should call your family and ask them to come and pick you up." I said, shaking my head with an apologetic expression.

I know Mawu Village. It's located on the road I just came out of. Go straight in, past An Lili's house, and walk about four or five kilometers to reach Mawu Village. Then walk another four or five kilometers to reach Shizi Village. Like our Dafeng Village, Shizi Village is the most remote village in our town. The difference is that Shizi Village has roads that connect in all directions and a large reservoir that connects to several neighboring towns. In contrast, to get to other villages and towns from Dafeng Village, besides the only paved road, you have to cross several mountains and walk along narrow mountain paths.

When the villagers of Dafeng Village want to go somewhere else, they usually come to this intersection to wait for a bus.

"Can you give me a ride home?" the girl in the white dress asked again softly.

"Miss, I'm so sorry, why don't you call your family and ask them to come and pick you up?"

It was already past 10 p.m. If I took this beautiful woman home, it would probably be past midnight by the time I got home. Besides, the most important thing was that my car battery was almost dead, and the headlights would only last for half an hour, just enough for me to get home.

If I take this girl home, I'll have to walk back in the dark, which will delay tomorrow's delivery. Plus, Zhang Guangyin already holds a grudge against me, so he'll definitely deduct a few hundred yuan from my pay. So, I can't help it.

"Can you give me a ride home? I want to go home," the girl in the white dress asked again.

I shook my head, thinking that the other person was a student and probably didn't have a cell phone, so I took out my own cell phone and said, "Give me your dad's cell phone number, I'll call him."

Upon hearing this, the girl in the white dress gave out a phone number.

I quickly typed the phone number into my phone, and suddenly a low battery warning popped up. I quickly canceled the warning and pressed the dial button. The battery had about 5% left. I know my own phone very well; once the battery is down to 5%, it will automatically shut down at any time.

Just as I pressed the dial button, I glanced at the traffic light and saw that it had turned green. I told the girl in the white dress to call her father to pick her up, and then I rode my electric bike across the road.

I was riding my electric bike with one hand and holding my phone to my ear with the other, silently chanting, "Answer it quickly, answer it quickly."

After ringing a few times, the call was finally answered. Before the other person could speak, I said urgently, "Your daughter is at the traffic light intersection. Come and pick her up and take her home."

No sooner had I finished speaking than my phone shut down.

I crossed the traffic light and came to the other side of the road. I stopped the car and turned around to tell the girl in the white dress that I had already called her father.

But when I looked back, I didn't see the girl in the white dress. I thought she had gone to relieve herself in the bushes, so I called out in that direction, "Hey beautiful, I've already told your dad. Just wait here patiently for 20 minutes, and he'll come to pick you up."

I didn't get a response, so I guessed the girl was in the restroom and didn't want me to know where I was. I shook my head and rode my electric bike toward Dafeng Village. Anyway, I had already notified her family.
