Chapter 57 Keeping the Appointment

I finished eating the rice in my bowl, cleaned up the dishes, covered the food on the table, and then left the kitchen.

Grandpa Wu was sleeping in a rocking chair in the yard, with the empty bottle of Erguotou (a type of Chinese liquor) on the ground, and then he started snoring.

I shook my head and rode my electric scooter out the door.

On the way, I began to think about what my fifth grandfather had said. It seemed like this was the first time he had told me about the past, but it was as if he hadn't really said anything at all.

However, I did get some information: my fifth grandfather used to be a soldier and even went to the battlefield; my grandfather was his savior.

However, judging from his attitude towards my grandfather, I feel that their relationship is not simple, but he didn't say it, and there's nothing I can do about it.

I also learned that my grandfather had been to the battlefield, but I don't know why he was able to appear on the battlefield.

When I was little, I didn't understand these things, and my grandfather rarely talked to me about his past, almost never.

Why did my grandfather settle here decades ago? Also, the ancestral tablets in my family's main hall are very different from others. Where did they originate from? They not only enshrine our ancestors but also the spirit tablets.

I have no idea whether my grandfather had any brothers or relatives. He has long since passed away, so even if I wanted to know, there would be no way to find out.

If I had the chance, I would love to find out the truth about my grandfather's death. As his grandson, I can't let him die in such an unclear way. I also want to know what my grandfather was looking for, and what he was hiding from. Was it an enemy, or something powerful?

I can't do all that with my current abilities. I need to get into the business first, and then become even better than Hu Ergou before I can slowly investigate.

Also, my grandfather had a good relationship with the village chief when he was alive, so the village chief might know something. It seems I need to find an opportunity to talk to him and see if I can get some useful information out of him.

Looking back now, the breathing technique my grandfather taught me must have been quite complex. I must practice it more, because it's the only skill my grandfather ever taught me.

Before I knew it, I was back at the courier station. It was already 3:30 in the afternoon.

I went back to the cabin and was just about to lie down for a while when I received a call from Tong Liu.

Tong Liu said to me on the phone, "Changming, are you still in Dafeng Village?"

"They're gone. I just got back to the courier station. Is there anything I can help you with?" I sat up in bed and asked.

“I just talked to Hu Ergou. He’s willing to teach me for 2,000 yuan, but he said he can’t teach you. I tried to persuade him for a long time, but he still shook his head and refused,” Tong Liu told me on the phone.

I frowned and asked, "Did he say why he couldn't teach me?"

“I asked him. He didn’t tell me at first, but he probably got annoyed by my persistent questioning and finally told me that he didn’t dare to teach me about my destiny.”

"Oh, I see," I replied, a look of disappointment on my face.

"By the way, Changming, what is your destiny?" Tong Liu asked me on the phone.

"Who knows? Hu Ergou calculated it for me, and the ancient coins are all cracked," I replied casually.

"That's really strange." Tong Liu seemed to sense my low spirits and comforted me, "It's okay, I'll try to persuade him again. Maybe he'll agree in a good mood. If that doesn't work, you can find someone else to teach you."

"Okay, if there's nothing else, I'll hang up now."

After Tong Liu said everything was fine, I hung up the phone.

He put his phone aside, lay back down on the bed, and stared blankly at the ceiling.

What exactly is my destiny?

Perhaps Hu Ergou really didn't know, or perhaps he knew but didn't want to say, or perhaps he didn't dare to say.

Damn it, could this be related to my third major tribulation?

Since Hu Ergou refuses to teach me, I have no choice but to think of other ways. There are many famous sorcerers in the whole town, but there are probably not many who are truly capable. The only one I know is Hu Ergou. I don't want a master who only knows how to bang gongs and drums and perform funeral rites for people, but a master who can catch ghosts and exorcise evil spirits.

I guess I'll have to find out if there are any other powerful figures around. My birthday is fast approaching, and I have a feeling that a shadow of death is looming over me.

"Damn it, I'll just take it one day at a time, and every day I live is a bonus." I stopped thinking about those upsetting things. Anyway, I had nothing to do, so I closed my eyes and took a nap.

I dozed off for a bit and then fell asleep. What woke me up was my phone ringing. I opened my eyes, picked up my phone, and saw that it was An Lili calling. So I swiped to answer the call.

"Changming, where are you? I can't find you even after get off work." An Lili's slightly dissatisfied voice came from the phone first.

I looked at my phone; it was 7:30 PM. Oh my god, I had actually slept for three hours! I turned on the light in the room and said, "I'm in my room. I wanted to take a nap when I got back this afternoon, but I fell asleep."

Maybe it's because I've been plagued by evil spirits for a while and I'm too tired. I haven't had a proper rest. Now that I feel relaxed for the time being, I'm sleepy as soon as I have a spare moment.

"Hmph, so you were just hiding in your room being lazy." An Lili's snort came through the phone, venting her dissatisfaction.

"Um...hehe, is there something you need?" I asked, scratching my head awkwardly.

"You really have a bad memory. Didn't we agree to go to a buffet together?" An Lili's dissatisfaction grew even stronger.

Upon hearing this, I slapped my forehead. I remembered it before I went out today, but after thinking about my grandfather, I had completely forgotten about it. If An Lili hadn't brought it up, I really wouldn't have remembered it at all.

I said apologetically, "Sorry, I just woke up. Where are you now?"

"Come over here to the electric vehicle shed quickly," An Lili said, then hung up the phone.

Hearing the busy tone on the phone, I hurriedly got up, straightened my clothes, glanced in the mirror, tidied my messy hair, and rushed out the door.

When I arrived at the bike shed, I saw An Lili sitting on her little turtle electric car, one foot on the ground, her heel stomping heavily on the floor, making a clattering sound.

"Lili, when do you get off work?" I asked with a smile as I walked up to her.

"It wasn't that long, it's been almost an hour since I got off work," An Lili said softly, glancing back at me with a hint of resentment in her eyes.

"Sorry, I overslept." I scratched my head, feeling really bad for making An Lili wait for so long.

"Come with me on your bike," An Lili said, and slowly rode ahead on her electric bike.

I didn't know if she had forgiven me or not, so I pushed my tram out and hurriedly followed.

On the way, An Lili rode her bicycle quietly without saying a word.

I clung tightly to her back, not knowing what to say.

About five minutes later.

An Lili stopped at a hot pot restaurant called Spicy Scramble, got out of the car, glanced at me, and went inside first.

I quickly parked the car and followed.

Perhaps because it was a newly opened station, this self-service hot pot restaurant was unusually popular. It took An Lili and me a lot of effort to find a seat.
