Chapter 9: Something Behind Me?

Hearing my shout, An Lili slowly reduced her speed, turned around, smiled, and said apologetically, "Sorry, I forgot your car battery was dead."

Looking at An Lili's gentle smile, I was momentarily at a loss. I didn't know why I had felt a chill just now. She was clearly a gentle girl. I must have been imagining things.

"It's okay, you're not far from home anyway."

After An Lili slowed down, I finally caught up with her, hanging two or three meters behind her.

“Zuo Changming, are you upset that I asked you to take me home? Zhang Guangyin is no good, and I know what he’s up to. But he’s our boss after all, and I feel bad about dragging you into this.” An Lili said slowly with an apologetic tone.

"It's fine. I don't get along with him either. At worst, I'll just let him deduct some of my wages. I'm used to it anyway," I said nonchalantly.

In the two or three years I've worked at the courier station, whoever offended Zhang Guangyin didn't have their wages deducted by him under some pretext?

However, Zhang Guangyin didn't dare to go too far. After all, his brother-in-law was the one who called the shots at the entire courier station. He could just deduct a hundred or two yuan and let it go. The main thing was that the wages at the courier station were relatively high in the town. During the peak of online shopping, they could earn four or five thousand yuan.

"Zuo Changming, what is your ideal?" An Lili asked without turning her head.

I thought for a moment and said, "I don't have any grand ambitions, I just want to live a good life."

“Aren’t you living a perfectly good life now?” An Lili turned around and looked at me, asking.

"My grandfather said that I will face three major tribulations in my life. I have already safely passed two of them, but my 24th birthday, my birth year in the Chinese zodiac, will be the most dangerous. If I don't make it through, I will only be able to eat until I am 24." With a worried look on my face, I briefly told An Lili what my grandfather had told me.

"hiss!"

An Lili suddenly slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching as they rubbed against the pavement.

I almost crashed into her without noticing. I quickly squeezed the brakes hard, which nearly broke my old electric scooter. Luckily, I didn't hit An Lili; the front of my scooter was less than three inches away from her.

An Lili ignored all of that, turned around and stared at me, asking with concern, "Zuo Changming, are you telling the truth?"

"Yes." I nodded and said very seriously, "This is what my grandfather told me. Whether you believe it or not, I believe him."

"Since your grandfather was so capable, didn't he leave behind any solutions?" An Lili's expression had softened as she asked again.

Seeing the change in An Lili's expression, I guessed that she didn't take what I said seriously. But I was too lazy to explain to her. If you don't believe in such allegorical things, there's no way to prove them.

"No." Thinking about what I was about to go through, I felt heavy-hearted and had no interest in continuing the conversation. I said, "It's getting late, let's go home."

An Lili nodded, didn't ask any more questions, and rode ahead on her bicycle.

An Lili's home is about four kilometers away from the express station, and it's on the same route as my home. She turns right at the traffic light and goes a few hundred meters in, while my home is on the left and goes straight in.

After riding for about seven or eight minutes, I took Anli back to her home.

"Zuo Changming, wait here for me, I'll go back and get something for you." After saying that, An Lili hurriedly ran towards his house.

I opened my mouth, about to speak, but An Lili had already disappeared.

An Lili's house is a two-story red brick house. I've always known she lives there, but I've never been there. Her house is about 200 square meters, with a large courtyard in front. The exterior walls are not yet decorated, but through the windows I can see that the interior is beautifully decorated. It's obviously much better than my tiled house.

As for what An Lili wanted to give me, I didn't want it, but she had already asked me to wait for her, and it wouldn't be right for me to just leave like that.

With nothing to do, I took out my phone and started playing a match-3 game.

"Whoosh!"

Just then, I felt a cold wind blow by, and my body involuntarily shivered.

"Damn it, how can it be so cold in this sweltering heat?" My hand trembled, and I accidentally tapped a few icons, ending this level prematurely. I put my phone back in my pocket, planning to wait for Zhang Lili to come out, say hello to her, and then go home.

It's about eleven kilometers back to our Dafeng Village from here, and at my current cycling speed, it will probably take me forty minutes.

Seeing that all the lights were on in An Lili's house, I couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. Besides myself, my only relative is my fifth grandfather. It's almost nine o'clock now, and I guess he'll be snoring by the time I get home.

Just as I was reminiscing about the times I lived with my grandfather, I suddenly felt something tap my shoulder.

"Who is it?" I asked softly, turning around to look. With the help of the dim light from An Lili's window, I couldn't see anything. About four or five meters away, it was pitch black due to the lighting.

That's strange. I felt like someone tapped me on the shoulder. Maybe I was just imagining things.

I looked around again, but still couldn't find anything. What kind of weather is this? It's the middle of summer, and suddenly it's so cold and damp.

I looked away, took out my phone again, and continued playing my match-3 game.

Just then, I felt something gently stroking my back and neck, or as if someone was blowing cold air on the back of my neck.

I got goosebumps all over my body, and I almost dropped my phone. Mustering my courage, I suddenly turned around and shouted, "Who is it?"

But when I looked at the scene behind me, I still didn't see anything. Could it be that I was mistaken?

But something's not right. If it happened once, I could say I was just imagining things, but it's happened twice now, and the sensation is still so realistic. If I'm not acting crazy, then I must have encountered something evil.

Thinking of this, the hairs on my body stood on end. No wonder the temperature suddenly became so cold; perhaps some dirty thing was following me.

I once heard the old folks in the village say that if you hear someone patting your shoulder or calling your name at night, you shouldn't turn around. They believe that every time you turn around, one of the three yang fires in your body will be extinguished. I've already turned around twice in a row. If I turn around just once more, all three of my yang fires will be extinguished, and then something bad will happen.

I gripped the handlebars of the electric scooter tightly, wanting to drive it into An Lili's house right now, but I didn't know anyone in her family, and it was too late at night to be convenient. I wouldn't know how to explain if her family asked me about it later.

Are you going to tell people you encountered a ghost at their doorstep?

My heart was pounding violently, and I had a feeling that something was approaching me from behind, getting closer and closer.
