I threw away the cigarette butt in my hand and continued riding my electric bike toward Dafeng Village.
Throughout the journey, I kept thinking about An Lili. The last time An Lili contacted me, she told me to be careful of Deng Xiaohong.
I suddenly had a very ominous premonition, as if I had fallen into some kind of vortex, and I knew nothing about it. I felt that I had been targeted from the very beginning.
Ever since An Lili gave me that amulet, I've been encountering evil spirits one after another, and now I've even become a ghost hunter. I feel like it's all so surreal.
He shook his head, clearing his mind of the jumbled thoughts. He knew he was about to face another major ordeal, and whether he could survive it was uncertain. He decided to take it one day at a time.
After returning to Dafeng Village, I went home first, put a bag of fruit back in the kitchen refrigerator, picked up the remaining bag, and headed to the village chief's house.
I arrived at the village chief's house and saw him sunbathing in the yard.
"Village Chief," I called out, and went inside carrying the fruit.
"Oh, hehe, it's Changming." Feng Dahai sat up from the rocking chair and chuckled.
"Village Chief, how have you been lately?" I sat down in the chair next to the village chief and placed the bag of fruit on the stone table.
"Alright, alright, Changming, come whenever you want next time. No need to bring anything, no need to be so polite." Feng Dahai adjusted his reading glasses and said with a smile.
The village chief, Feng Dahai, is almost seventy years old this year, but he is still in good health. His son has gone out to work, and his wife and children have also gone out. Now only he lives in Dafeng Village.
Feng Dahai is a kind and gentle man. He always thinks of the villagers first when doing anything. Whenever there is a policy from above, he discusses it with the villagers. That's why, even though he is so old, everyone always elects him as the village chief.
"Hehe, it's just a few pieces of fruit." I chuckled and handed a cigarette to Feng Dahai.
Feng Dahai took the cigarette, glanced at me, and asked, "Changming, is there something you need from this sudden visit?"
"I have something I want to ask you." I didn't beat around the bush and looked at Feng Dahai, asking, "Village Chief, did you see my grandfather the night he passed away?"
Feng Dahai was taken aback by his words and asked, "Changming, why are you suddenly asking this?"
“I know my grandfather did not die a natural death. If you, the village chief, know anything, please tell me the truth.” I looked at Feng Dahai and said seriously. The night my grandfather had the accident, my left eye hurt a lot. Later, when I went back to sleep, I couldn’t fall asleep no matter what I did. Until my grandfather came in and said a few words to me, I suddenly felt a wave of drowsiness. The next day, I found my grandfather dead at the gate of the courtyard.
I remember I slept very soundly that night, I didn't even dream, and I didn't wake up in the middle of the night.
"It's been so long, why are you still asking about this?" Feng Dahai frowned, shook his head and said, "Changming, actually I don't know why either, I didn't see your grandfather that night."
“Village Chief, I know you’re not telling the truth. My grandfather was closest to you when he was alive. If you know anything, please tell me the truth.” I looked at Feng Dahai and said earnestly.
"I really don't know." Feng Dahai lit a cigarette in his hand and shook his head like a rattle drum.
“Village chief, I’m an adult now. I’m not stupid. There’s obviously something wrong with my grandfather’s death. He even told you where he was buried after he died, but didn’t he say anything else? Oh, he’s started cultivating now. I have the right to know the truth.” To prove my strength, I reached out and took out a piece of yellow paper. As I poured my magic power into it, I flicked it lightly, and the yellow paper instantly burst into flames.
Feng Dahai's expression changed, and he looked at me with disbelief, asking, "Changming, who taught you that?"
"I learned it in my dream." I made up an excuse. I knew Feng Dahai wouldn't believe me, but just to be on the safe side, I didn't tell him about the USB drive my grandfather left me.
Feng Dahai shook his head, took a few deep drags on his cigarette, sighed, and slowly said, "Changming, actually your grandfather did come to me that night. He asked me to take care of you after she left, and then he gave me a letter."
Sure enough, it was pretty much what I guessed. Grandpa had contacted Feng Dahai before he died, and he also knew he was going to die.
"Where is the letter?" I asked hurriedly.
“It’s been too long, I don’t know where it went. Actually, the letter didn’t say anything, it just told me that after he died, he should be buried in Shantang’ao.” Feng Dahai said slowly.
I didn't believe the letter was missing, but since Feng Dahai had said so, I didn't press the matter further. Instead, I asked, "What did my grandfather say to you that night?"
"That's all." Feng Dahai shook his head.
"Village chief, just tell me frankly, I'm strong enough now to protect myself," I pressed.
Feng Dahai suddenly stared at me intently, and asked with a disdainful look, "Can your strength compare to your grandfather's?"
“I…” I was rendered speechless by Feng Dahai’s retort.
"Alright, Changming, let bygones be bygones. I'm just an ordinary person. Your grandfather and I have a good relationship, but he really didn't say anything to me," Feng Dahai said slowly.
I naturally don't believe Feng Dahai's words, but if he doesn't want to talk about it, there's nothing I can do.
"Village Chief, do you know anything about what happened at Shantang'ao?" Since Feng Dahai was unwilling to talk about my grandfather, I wanted to ask about what happened at Shantang'ao.
"Is there a lot going on at Shantang'ao?" Feng Dahai asked curiously.
I was speechless looking at Feng Dahai's pretentious expression, and said directly, "The reason why construction at Shantang'ao was stopped back then was because we dug up something taboo, and I heard that dozens of people died there."
Upon hearing this, Feng Dahai's expression changed drastically, and he hurriedly asked, "Who told you that?"
“An old man.” I didn’t say Huang Bo’s name aloud, and gave an ambiguous reply.
"Changming, don't ask about what happened at Shantang'ao. Actually, I know about the same things as you. The higher-ups have strictly prohibited spreading rumors, so don't say anything like that again," Feng Dahai said with an extremely serious expression.
"Village chief, what exactly was unearthed at Shantang'ao back then? And what was that taboo?" I didn't give up and continued to ask.
"I don't know. Let's go back, Changming. I'm going to take a nap." Feng Dahai said, lying back in the rocking chair and closing his eyes.
I smirked. It's not even 10 o'clock yet, what kind of nap is this?
Seeing that Feng Dahai was unwilling to say more, I didn't ask any more questions and got up to walk out of the courtyard.
As I stepped out of the courtyard, I heard Feng Dahai's voice, "Changming, don't investigate the matter of Shantang'ao. Just live your life."
"Village chief, I understand," I replied, and walked towards my home.
