Chapter 27 A Terrifying Speculation

On the other side of the river, Wen Zuo, who was supporting Mo Shuwan, took advantage of her exhaustion and quickly bent down to lift her onto his shoulder. Feeling her struggle, Wen Zuo gently patted Mo Shuwan's leg to express his determination not to put her down, and then focused most of his attention on the ground.

He hadn't forgotten what the man had said about zombie shrimp and zombie crabs on the ground. Since they were basically invisible, Wen Zuo kept sweeping the surroundings with the broken branches to make sure that the zombie shrimp or zombie crabs wouldn't get close.

Other passengers noticed Wen Zuo's actions and immediately followed suit, sweeping their bodies around with tree branches.

Mo Shuwan lay on her bag, utterly exhausted. When the flashlight beam shone through the water, she had seen the scene in the river, which was even more terrifying than what she had seen by the bus that morning. Just thinking about it made her want to vomit. She quickly covered her mouth and lay weakly on her backpack.

"If you don't come over soon, we're leaving."

"No, no, no, don't go! We're coming right now!" Upon hearing Bai Shu say he was leaving, the passengers were terrified and hurriedly tried to rush onto the wooden bridge.

Before they could even get close, they heard a splashing sound as something fell into the water, and the sound grew louder and louder. After thinking about it carefully, the group of passengers turned pale.

I'm afraid those two people have been eaten...

After a brief silence, a passenger asked in a tearful voice, "What...what do we do...?"

"Shall we charge through?"

A group of people silently watched the wooden bridge, which was barely visible in the moonlight, and listened to the occasional splashing sounds. They wished they could just fly across; crossing the river now would be suicide!

While they hesitated, the white tree across the way impatiently urged them again. The passengers shuddered, and someone suggested, trembling, "No, why don't we throw this person on the ground into the water? He's unconscious here anyway, and he'll be eaten by zombies sooner or later. We might as well save his life. After we're saved, we can burn more paper money for him."

Once the suggestion was made, no passengers spoke up. Even the trembling sobs that had been heard earlier ceased. The suggestion sent a chill down the spines of a few passengers, but in this life-or-death crisis, most passengers automatically shut down the consequences of their actions, and no one voiced any objection.

Half a minute later, when they realized that the people on the other side seemed to really be planning to leave, they immediately panicked.

Someone gritted their teeth and growled, "Move people!"

Several people quickly bent down to move the unconscious passenger. As they were about to throw him into the river, they muttered incoherently, "Don't worry, once we're safe, we'll burn lots of paper money for you, so you can live a life of wealth and honor down there. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. Your sacrifice now can save so many of our lives. It's not a loss... not a loss..."

"Stop arguing, just throw it away!"

Mo Shuwan, who was being carried on Wen Zuo's shoulder, had just recovered when she heard a loud splash. Recalling the scene she had just witnessed, a chill ran down her spine as she realized something was wrong. This time... why didn't she hear any screams from the passengers?

Mo Shuwan, who was doubting whether it was a passenger who had fallen into the water, suddenly heard a gurgling sound, clearly the sound of someone falling into the water and drowning. A bad feeling rose in her heart, and she asked in a trembling voice, "Wen Zuo, has someone fallen into the water?"

Wen Zuo was still sweeping around with a branch when he heard Mo Shuwan's question. His eyes grew colder. Although he hadn't seen what was happening on the other side, he had guessed something.

Thinking this, he carried Mo Shuwan a little further away from the surrounding passengers.

"Holy crap, these people look timid and cowardly, but I didn't expect them to be so ruthless."

Thanks to the passengers' forced sacrifice, the others finally made it to the other side safely.

Ignoring his companion's complaints, Xiangzi said directly, "Let's go."

They didn't throw off their stilts. They walked on them for another five or six minutes until they reached an open space. Then, they climbed down onto a ladder set up by a tree. The two strong men carrying the unconscious girl and the injured Qin Lei were the first to climb up.

With his own strength, Wen Zuo easily pushed Mo Shuwan to the front, first pushing Mo Shuwan up the ladder before climbing up himself.

After climbing up, she went down the ladder on the other side. When Mo Shuwan turned her head, she could vaguely see a net behind her. She guessed that it was a net to block the zombie shrimp and zombie crab.

After walking through the winding forest for more than ten minutes, they could finally faintly hear human voices. Bai Shu and the others, who had been on edge, relaxed and led the group behind them to run quickly toward the safe zone.

As the group approached, the people in the safe zone clearly noticed them as well. Suddenly, many torches lit up in the previously dark place and quickly moved towards the group. Soon, the darkness in their field of vision was completely dispelled by the firelight.

The burly man who ran up to them the fastest breathed a sigh of relief as he looked at Xiangzi and the others. "I thought something had happened to you."

"Something came up and I was held up for a bit." Xiangzi took a torch, turned around and looked at the group of people with happy expressions, then turned to the burly man and said, "Take them all to Lu Cheng... You two come with me."

The last sentence was meant for Mo Shuwan and Wen Zuo. Wen Zuo frowned, helped the unsteady Mo Shuwan, and followed behind Xiangzi. After walking for a while, they heard people behind them talking, "I was worried when I saw the blood moon, but I didn't expect the harvest to be so good this time."

"Yes, thankfully."

A pretty good haul?

Wen Zuo frowned and turned his head. He saw the survivors and passengers in the safe zone with their joyful faces, as if they had survived a disaster. He could understand the passengers' reaction, but why did the people in the safe zone also react this way?

What did they gain? Why do we say they gained quite a bit?

A terrifying thought, both for him and for the passengers, vaguely rose in Wen Zuo's mind, but it only lingered for a moment before being dismissed. He frowned and pulled Mo Shuwan closer to him, his expression noticeably more wary than before.

Since they only had torches for lighting, they couldn't see their surroundings very clearly. They could only barely make out a very simple shed next to them. After following Xiangzi around for about three minutes, the three of them stopped in front of a very dilapidated shed.

"You can stay here. If you want a better shed, then show your ability." Xiangzi appreciated Wen Zuo and Mo Shuwan more, and his tone was closer to equality than the commanding tone he had used when speaking to the other passengers.

Wen Zuo nodded.

Xiangzi's gaze shifted from Wen Zuo's face to Mo Shuwan, who was almost limp in his arms. A look of doubt flashed across his eyes, but he didn't think much of it and said directly, "We agreed to share half of the food."
