Chapter 1: Atonement

Yao Ying brought the Jin generals back to the yard and was surprised to find that Xie Qing and the others had returned.

When everyone saw it, Xie Chong and his companions were so excited to see the carrier falcon that they surrounded it and vied to feed it.

The Jin general was in high spirits, his claws tightly grasping the eagle stand.

A dozen guards stretched out their arms, handed over the piece of meat, and stared at it eagerly.

The Jin general looked around arrogantly and snatched away a piece of meat offered by one of his personal soldiers. He looked completely different from the weak look he had just had when he was attacked by Kakula.

At night, Yuanjue sent a falcon slave to teach his personal soldiers how to train hawks.

The next morning, Yaoying was awakened by a series of clanging sounds, and then with a bang, something slammed hard against the door.

There was a chaotic sound of footsteps, and the guards were shouting something anxiously.

Amid the chaos, there were one or two sharp, rapid cries.

Yaoying was startled, got up, quickly put on a fur jacket, and opened the door.

Two dark shadows intertwined in mid-air, their sharp claws grabbing at each other mercilessly, and bird feathers fluttering.

Yao Ying's mouth twitched slightly: Why is Kakulu fighting with the Jin generals again?

The Jin general was no match for Kaluga, so he suddenly folded his wings, swooped down, and pounced on Yao Ying.

The eagle slave who came running over whistled and raised his arm with an armband to lead the Jin general away for Yao Ying. She had just stood up and was not wearing any protective gear, so she would be scratched by the eagle's claws.

The golden general was taken away by the eagle slave. Kakula flapped his wings, and his sturdy figure disappeared behind the snow-covered courtyard wall.

Yao Ying clutched her leather jacket tightly, not knowing whether to laugh or cry: Could it be that the entire Royal Temple is Kakula’s territory?

It seems that the only option is to send the Jin general out of the city.

As she pondered, she turned and went back to her room. She glanced casually at her feet, and her toes touched something soft, causing a chill to run down her body.

There were a bunch of dead rats lying all over the place in front of the door.

"These mice were sent by the Buddha's eagle." Xie Chong had just finished boxing and was sweating all over. He lay on the porch and panted, "Seven or eight were sent!"

Yao Ying was stunned.

Could it be that Kalura was offering her compensation and apology?

Yao Ying looked at the dead mouse on the ground, shook her head and laughed, asked someone to come and clean it up, called her personal soldiers, and told them about Zhu Luyun and her group.

She wanted to pick someone to go to the post station to keep an eye on the Beirong delegation.

Xie Chong immediately volunteered, making a gesture of wiping his neck: "Princess, I can kill her without anyone noticing."

Yao Ying shook her head.

Xie Chong looked disappointed.

Yao Ying named another soldier: "Xie Yan, you speak the Hu language best, go to the post house and keep an eye on the Beirong envoys."

Xie Yan was a tall man, and he learned the Hu language the fastest among the personal soldiers. Moreover, his mother was a Hu woman, and he inherited his mother's appearance. He wore a short robe and long boots, and looked no different from a Hu person.

"Remember, you're not going to kill anyone."

Xie Yan agreed and asked, "Princess, what do I need you to do?"

"Keep an eye on them, follow them, and no matter what happens, don't alarm them," Yao Ying warned.

The princess understood Zhu Luyun and knew that she would not be able to achieve anything great, but she still sent her on the mission. There must be other reasons.

Xie Yan nodded: "I'll remember it."

After breakfast, Yao Ying wrote a letter to Yang Qian, Wei Chi Damo, and the caravan outside the city.

The guards told her that the letter could no longer be delivered: "The four armies of the royal court are arrogant and have guarded the city gates in the name of strict discipline. From today on, the monks of the royal temple cannot go out, let alone leave the holy city. All letters will be confiscated by them."

Xie Chong lowered his voice and said worriedly, "Will their Buddhist disciples completely lose power? Princess, should we make plans early?"

Several other people also started to worry. The outside of the city was already crowded with private soldiers of the noble families, and the Buddhist disciples only had the central army. If the new regent elected was a Dong Zhuo-like figure, wouldn't the Buddhist disciples be forced to be puppets in the future?

Yao Ying did not explain anything to them, but only told everyone not to go out for the next few days.

While they were busy, someone came in and reported: "Princess, General Ashina's entourage is here."

The man who came was wearing a blue shirt of the Central Army and a white robe on his shoulders. He took out the bronze talisman of Bisha and said, "Princess, General Ashina wants you to go to the Sutra Cave to discuss something with you, which is what the general mentioned to you yesterday."

Yao Ying remembered this incident, took the written letter, and followed the guards out of the yard.

The atmosphere in the temple was heavy and solemn. The monks gathered in the main hall in the front to chant scriptures. The corridors and courtyards were empty and there was not a single person to be seen for a long time.

Yao Ying followed the guard for a long time, frowning slightly. The Sutra Cave was on the north side of the temple, and the terrain should be getting higher and higher. Why did it feel like they were walking south all the way?

She glanced at the guards and confirmed that one of them was Bisha's follower. Puzzled, she winked at Xie Qing beside her.

The two exchanged silent glances for a while, then Xie Qing's face turned cold and he gripped the knife handle tightly.

Yao Ying remained calm and looked around. The surroundings were silent. There were four people on the other side, all of them were tall and strong, and had a fierce aura. Xie Qing could not handle them alone.

Her mind was racing with ideas, but before she could think of a way to escape, the guard suddenly stopped without warning, swayed slightly, turned around, spread his five fingers, and sprinkled a cloud of powder at her.

Yao Ying had been paying attention to the guards' movements. Seeing this, she quickly held her breath, covered her mouth and nose with her sleeves, and quickly retreated. Without wasting a moment, she turned around and ran.

She couldn't help Xie Qing, and staying behind would be a burden, so she ran as far as she could.

The guards did not expect Yao Ying to react so quickly. They were stunned for a moment, then rushed forward. Xie Qing drew her sword and rushed forward. Two guards beside her drew their swords and slashed at her, but she pulled back and dodged, keeping a tight defensive position.

Another guard took the opportunity to pounce on Yao Ying.

Xie Qing was secretly anxious and turned around to try to stop them, but the other three immediately dispersed and blocked her way. She had no way to escape and could only grit her teeth and fight back.

Yao Ying focused on the towering pagoda and grotto in the distance and started running as fast as she could. She heard hurried footsteps behind her and the guards had caught up with her. Their tall figures loomed over her and their big hands like a palm-leaf fan grabbed her braid.

There was a gust of wind behind her head, and cold fingers tightly grasped her shoulders.

After Yao Ying left, Xie Chong and others continued to practice boxing.

There was a sound of footsteps at the door, and several guards with swords walked into the yard and asked, "Where is Princess Wen Zhao? General Ashina wants her to visit the Sutra Cave."

Xie Chong and the others were stunned: "Didn't you just come over to tell me that the princess has already gone to the Sutra Cave."

The guards looked at each other in bewilderment, then immediately turned around and chased after them. They found their way to the Scripture Cave, but did not see Yao Ying and her group, and were greatly shocked.

"Go and report to the general!"

Bisha was on duty in front of the palace. The guards came over and reported the situation to him, and his face changed drastically.

"Don't alarm the king."

Bi Su quickly calmed down and gave orders to his guards in a deep voice.

"Take two teams and search carefully from south to north. Everywhere is heavily guarded now. No one can take the princess out of the temple. They must still be hiding in the temple."

The guard said anxiously: "General, they may have left the temple with your bronze talisman! As a matter of fact, we must ask the monks to help find them as soon as possible, but the monks only obey the king's orders..."

Bisha's face was as gloomy as water.

A meeting to appoint a regent was about to be held, and he did not want to distract Tanmaragha.

But if Princess Wen Zhao was taken away and hidden, and something happened to her... he would feel guilty.

The princess said she treated him as a friend.

Bisha closed his eyes and turned to go into the hall.

Tanmaraka sat cross-legged in front of the Buddha with his back to him, his breathing was intermittent, as if he had entered a state of meditation.

Bisha knelt on one knee.

"Your Majesty, Princess Wen Zhao was taken away by one of my subordinates under a false name... She may have left the temple by now. Please order the monks to conduct a thorough search."

The palace was as quiet as sinking water, and even the crows and sparrows were silent.

Bisa waited for a while, thinking that Tanmaragha did not hear him. He hesitated whether to say it again. He raised his head and was stunned.

Tanmarajiva had already walked in front of him, her steps were slow and calm, her face was serene, her blue eyes were deep and without a trace of emotion.

The pair of thick brows that gathered the beauty of mountains and rivers were slightly furrowed.

"When did it happen?"

Bi Suo came to his senses and replied, "Just now."

Tanmaraka had no expression on his face. He walked out of the inner hall and summoned the monks guarding the hall, "Go south to look for it."

There are many pagodas and caves under the northern rocks, and monk soldiers patrol every half an hour. The southern area is flat and spacious, with a large number of empty monk rooms. The monk soldiers have withdrawn to the northern hall in the past few days. If someone wants to take Yaoying away from the Wang Temple, it will undoubtedly be easier to escape from there.

At Tanmarajava's command, the monks moved immediately and dispersed along their respective patrol routes.

Bisha was extremely anxious and searched along the way with his guards.

After searching for a while, I heard shouting from the south.

“Found it!”

"Princess Wen Zhao has been found!"

"Princess Wen Zhao is safe and sound."

Bisha was overjoyed and led people to meet him.

The corridor was crowded with people, and several monk soldiers escorted Yao Ying and Xie Qing down the stone steps.

Yao Ying's hair was untidy, her clothes were disheveled, she looked frail and her steps were slightly unsteady.

Xie Qing followed her half a step behind. After the fight, there were several bloody marks on his face and neck, and some minor injuries on his arms and waist. His clothes were stained with blood, his expression was cold, and his hand was still tightly holding the sword.

Bi Suo's heart tightened, and she stared at Yao Ying in the distance without blinking. After confirming that she was not injured, she let out a long breath, and the stone in her heart fell to the ground. She walked forward quickly, took off the white robe on her shoulders and wrapped her up, and said softly: "It was because of my negligence that the princess was frightened."

Yao Ying had just narrowly escaped being taken away by the guards, and was still terrified: "The general's followers have escaped."

Bi Su's expression turned fierce, and he sneered: "He can't run too far."

He glanced at Yao Ying and said softly, "I'll take the princess back."

Yao Ying nodded.

At this time, a monk soldier came over quickly and stopped the two of them: "The king has ordered that Princess Wen Zhao does not need to go back yet."

After saying that, he motioned Yaoying to follow him.

Yaoying looked at Bisu.

Bi Suo's expression froze for a moment, the corners of her mouth twitched, her eyes flickered, and her gaze wandered.

Yao Ying thought about it and asked Xie Qing to go back and catch up with the monk soldiers.

Bisha also followed.

Led by the monk soldiers, the two walked through a corridor covered with murals. The snow was reflected in the corridor, and the blue-gold light and shadows floated and shimmered, forming a layer of light spots like water on the ground. The morning breeze blew the bells hanging on the eaves, making them tinkle.

Elegant, solemn and quiet, with a solemn appearance.

Yaoying suddenly realized that this was another passage leading to Tanmarajiva's meditation room.

Yuanjue was guarding at the door. When he saw Yaoying, a look of relief appeared on his face and he lifted the felt curtain.

Bi Suo and Yao Ying entered the meditation room one after another.

A cold gaze swept over, like a flash of lightning, and landed on Yao Ying.

Tanmaraka stood in front of the window, looking back at her. He was wearing a too-large crimson cassock, with wrinkles like water, which made him look thin. The sunlight slanted in through the window, shining on his profile. His handsome eyebrows and eyes were like a blurred ink painting, making his facial features look deeper, and his blue eyes were slightly lowered.

Yaoying met his eyes and suddenly found it difficult to breathe.
