Chapter 39 Land of Freedom (Part Six): The Runaway Heiress and the Raven Bodyguard...
"What's going on??"
Feng Feng opened his eyes.
Tables, chairs, benches, an old man with a blackboard, and curtains billowing in the wind, like a blue flame trying to lick the shaky chandelier on the ceiling. On the blackboard and floor are written eight large characters: Saint One High School, The Road to Success.
It's a school again.
What she feared most came to pass; she really had a grudge against the school.
But that's not the point. The point is that she looked left and right, front and back, until even the teacher with the shiny bald head on the podium couldn't help but remind her to pay attention to classroom discipline, but she still couldn't find the other three people who had entered the dream together.
Feng Feng leaned back in despair and slumped into his seat.
She didn't hear a word the short, bald old man said. She could only lean weakly against the back of her seat, staring blankly out the window.
The window seats are always reserved for the main character.
But the protagonist Feng Feng's heart was as gloomy as the afternoon weather.
Dark clouds rolled in, heavy and looming overhead like a layer of over-pastemed cement, threatening to drip down at any moment. The air was thick with dampness, saturated with moisture, a storm brewing. The curtains on the left were blown into the classroom, causing a commotion. Everyone seemed to have left the classroom; a heart that had escaped the drudgery of mathematics secretly hoped for the impending downpour to soak the desks, drench the books, and ideally, flood the entire school.
Even the teacher couldn't suppress the commotion in the classroom, especially since it was the last class of the day. With the rain and school let out simultaneously, he simply pretended not to see anything and continued writing on the blackboard. After all, who doesn't want to go home after get off work?
A draft carrying moisture swept through the classroom, rustling the pages of books on the desks. A curtain fell over Feng Feng's head, but she remained unmoved, resting her chin on her hand, unable to think of any solution to the current situation.
"Let's wait and see." This spot offers a wide view; the curtains of the opposite teaching building are being blown by the wind. In the cubicle classroom, the teacher is instructing the students to tie the curtains into a knot. This way, ventilation can be maintained without affecting the students' concentration. You know, anything outside of studying is a fatal attraction for students in the classroom.
From Feng Feng's perspective, each classroom was filled with different scenes, making it much more interesting than math class.
Suddenly, a student stopped by the window of a classroom on the fourth floor. She seemed to be attracted by something and did not move even when the teacher behind her called out to remind her.
Immediately afterwards, more and more students crowded around their windows throughout the building, some even sticking their heads out from the windowsills. These dangerous actions prompted teachers to rush forward to stop them, but the students stopped and stared blankly upwards.
An atmosphere of restlessness permeated the campus.
“What is that…” Feng Feng, sitting by the window, curiously peeked out and, without any warning, saw a giant Saturn breaking through the clouds and slowly approaching Earth in the dark sky.
“…”
"Finally, something different!"
Feng Feng jumped up from his seat, excitedly leaning most of his body out.
"What?? The end of the world or aliens?" she muttered to herself, the wind blowing her red hair behind her. She was five or six stories below, a sight that made people's hearts ache.
The sudden movement startled everyone. The teacher was about to reprimand them, but the students who had also noticed the unusual activity on the horizon all stood up and gathered noisily around the window.
"Holy crap...a planet is hitting Earth...!"
"Can I ask if there's no homework today?"
"Early dismissal? How many days off?"
"Alright, alright, I won't hide it from you anymore. It's time to step up and save the world!"
No one was afraid; everyone was excitedly discussing the suddenly appearing giant Saturn.
As darkness fell, countless stars emerged from behind the clouds, spanning light-years, with three full moons serving as vanguard warriors—a war waged by the universe.
"And then what!" Feng Feng felt that wasn't enough, and that something even more exciting should happen. Then, a vibration came from under her desk. It wasn't until other classmates reminded her that she realized the sound was coming from under her desk.
Feng Feng gave up the best window seat with a blank look on his face, retreated to his own seat, took out his constantly ringing phone, and looked at the caller ID.
"driver."
"What a strange electronic product..." She still had the leisure to talk nonsense. She didn't quite understand what the word "driver" meant. She hesitated for a few seconds whether to answer the call, but then remembered that she had a mission when she entered the dream. In order not to miss any clues, she pressed the answer button.
"Hello?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end, then a familiar voice rang out.
"Xiao Feng, it's me."
"Ying Ya?!" Heaven knows how excited she was to hear a familiar voice at this moment. "When did you become a driver??"
"..." The person on the other end probably lacked language skills and genuinely didn't know how to say it, "I..."
"Alright, you don't need to say anything more." Before Ying Ya could even organize his thoughts, a flaming meteor crashed into the corridor outside the classroom right before Feng Feng's eyes.
Because of the close proximity, the heat wave hit them instantly, evaporating all the moisture around them and even briefly taking away the oxygen. Out of instinct, most of the students crawled under the tables.
Screams rang in his ears. Feng Feng turned his head and glanced at the world outside the window. More and more fireballs were falling from the sky. A distorted electrical sound came from his phone, along with Ying Ya's anxious shouts.
The corridor outside the classroom had collapsed, and the classroom was like a cliff. Without hesitation, Feng Feng turned around, stepped onto the chair, and stepped to the edge of the window. The wind made her clothes flutter. Standing on the high window, Feng Feng was like a general facing an army at the gates but showing a wicked smile. All dramatic conflicts were her hobby. Her big eyes reflected a world where stars had fallen.
The cell phone signal was disappearing. She said to Ying Ya in a firm tone, "Now do you know why you exist as a driver? Bring your car, Sheng Yi High School, come pick me up right now!"
Without receiving a reply from Ying Ya, the signal was completely cut off, and Feng Feng wasn't sure if Ying Ya had heard her instructions. But it didn't matter; a hero was just a hero, one person was enough.
She stuffed her now-useless phone into her bag, then opened her arms wide. You could vaguely feel the wind lifting her up, making you think you were on a wind-chasing path, where you could escape instantly just by saying a name.
But she knew that the Wind Chaser Path couldn't be set up in the dreams of demons and monsters; all the natural disasters and apocalypses were just the work of demons. Feng Feng took a deep breath and leaped off the windowsill. Amidst the falling meteor fragments around him, the fleeing crowd scattered like ants in a swarm beneath him.
Just as she was about to hit the ground, a force tore through the earth, and vines as thick as giant trees cushioned her fall. She simply leaped through the air, and vines sprouted from the ground, steadily serving as a ladder for the red-haired girl to escape. She fluttered her wings like a fierce little bird, dodging the rain of falling rocks.
The school gate was right in front of her, but a huge boulder was about to fall down and block Feng Feng's way. She looked up for a moment, and without pausing, she stretched out her right hand and quickly flicked a sturdy vine from her palm, locking it to a pillar next to the school gate. Before the boulder fell, just as Xia Zhu had hoped, she swung out of the school like a wild monkey.
With a graceful landing in a perfect pose, the little red bird raises its arms high, waving to an audience that doesn't actually exist.
"Wait a minute..." But she immediately realized her current situation.
"Isn't this world a bit too big? Which way should I go...?"
A surprise attack came from the sky. A red-eyed raven, like a proud petrel in a storm, swooped down at lightning speed through the meteor shower and falling flames towards Feng Feng's location. After confirming that it had received the signal, it gave her a deep look, then flicked its tail feathers and turned around.
Feng Feng understood that Ying Ya was leading the way for her, so she followed behind the crow and started running all the way.
The main road was filled with chaotic crowds, broken cars collided, and tall buildings collapsed instantly. Crow led Feng Feng into a narrow alley, seemingly to take a shortcut. With the help of vines, she moved at high speed. Just as she was about to reach the alley entrance, a runaway SUV suddenly rushed in, its front end stuck at the alley entrance. Gravel and bricks flew towards Feng Feng. She quickly threw out two vines, which wrapped around the rooftops on both sides of the narrow alley. Using the momentum, she swung over the SUV like a swing, narrowly avoiding the falling gravel.
But just as she landed, another car came rushing towards her from directly in front. The driver seemed to notice someone there and immediately slammed on the brakes, causing the car to drift and crash sideways into Feng Feng.
"No way, how come it keeps coming back..." Just as she was about to raise the vines again, the car that was blocking her way suddenly opened the driver's side door, and a pale hand reached out and grabbed Feng Feng's waist. Another hand with a skeletal appearance quickly turned the steering wheel, smoothly and skillfully bringing the car back on track.
Feng Feng was completely disoriented, but she realized that Ying Ya was driving. She shook her head, broke free from Ying Ya's firm embrace, and ran to the passenger seat.
"Phew~" Feng Feng wiped non-existent sweat from her forehead, her limbs going weak as she slumped into the seat. Staring at the constantly changing, swaying road ahead, she asked Ying Ya with delight, "I didn't know you could drive!"
The car was quiet, a stark contrast to the apocalyptic scene outside.
Feng Feng felt goosebumps rise on her forearms. She gripped the seatbelt tightly, her grip trembling slightly, and turned to confirm again, "I didn't know you could drive..."
She hated that Ying Ya was like a block of wood, never saying a word.
"Say something, okay?"
Ying Ya tried to turn his face to face Feng Feng, but she noticed and quickly reached out to hold his head forward.
His blank voice slipped out through Feng Feng's fingers via bone conduction: "I didn't know either, that I could drive."
The little crow finally spoke, and Feng Feng quickly fastened his seatbelt, put his feet together, placed his hands obediently on his knees, and looked straight ahead.
"No rush, you'll learn to drive a car in no time, haha." She felt she needed to boost morale.
Fortunately, Feng Feng's words were as good as gold. The phrase "once you open it" seemed to have an added bonus for Ying Ya. He calmly performed a few drifting maneuvers and steadily dodged several fire meteors falling in front of him.
Feng Feng finally breathed a sigh of relief; in crucial moments, the little crow was still reliable.
Have you seen my brother and Azhu?
Ying Ya shook his head.
Feng Feng looked somewhat disappointed, his eyes dimming considerably.
"Do you know what's going on? Why do I have your contact information in my phone?"
Ying Ya was able to answer the question this time, and he was happy that he had solved Feng Feng's doubts.
“I’m your driver. I woke up in the car and a woman asked me to pick up her daughter from school. I called to confirm that her daughter is you.”
"Daughter? Mom appeared in my dream too??" Feng Feng perked up, only to see Ying Ya shake his head again: "Not that mom."
"oh."
