Chapter 39: "Bad Man and Evil Woman" are a perfect match
downstairs.
The servants were turning on the backup lights.
The housekeeper was anxiously making a phone call, urging the person on the other end to come over and check the wires. Hearing footsteps coming from the stairs, the housekeeper immediately put down what he was doing and hurried forward: "Sir, is the wife okay?"
He brought soup to the study when the power went out.
Suddenly remembering his wife taking a bath, he blurted out that the bathroom was slippery and he was worried she might fall. He closed his computer, stood up, and strode to the master bedroom.
"She's fine."
"That's good."
"Have you found out the reason for the power outage in the villa?"
"I called to ask," the housekeeper replied. "The ongoing extreme snowstorm has downed the power lines. Not only here, but all nearby homes are without electricity. They said they've dispatched a specialist to repair it. The restoration time is yet to be determined, but it's expected to be tomorrow morning. Why don't you get some rest while the villa's heating lasts?"
"I'm fine. It's winter and your back and legs are not feeling well. Go to bed early."
"Why."
The butler nodded in response.
In a moment, the figure disappeared in the dim corridor.
The servants turned on the last spare light in the hallway and went back to their rooms to sleep. The huge villa was very quiet. The light from the snow outside shone in and fell on Han Zhan's tall figure.
He went to the backyard.
Carrying a large pile of dry firewood.
He sat in the vent and lit the fire with sawdust. It burned for about half an hour, then put the sparks into the portable fireplace and went to the master bedroom. The room was quiet. With the faint snow outside the window, he glanced at the person sleeping in the big bed.
Shi Yin was not sleeping soundly. Before falling asleep, she went to get a thick quilt. Now she was covered with two layers, wrapped very tightly, with only her head exposed. Han Zhan was afraid that her small body would be crushed to death by the quilt.
Han Zhan placed the fireplace near the window.
The window was opened a little.
Connect the insulated chimney.
The burning firewood gradually raised the temperature in the bedroom, dispelling the chill and spreading warmth to every corner. Han Zhan stood by the bed for a long time, gazing at his wife's profile, watching her frown slowly relax, her slender arms gradually emerging from the quilt, and she fell asleep comfortably.
The phone in my pocket vibrated a few times.
Han Zhan lowered his eyes to glance at the caller ID, walked out of the bedroom, and then answered the call from Lu Cheng in the corridor outside: "What's up?"
"What took you so long to answer the phone?
"Watch my wife sleep."
"You're sick." Lu Cheng said to him.
"envy?"
"Who has the time to be jealous of you? Mr. Elton sent me an email saying your plan is great and he's happy to work with you. He asked if you have time for an online video call. He wants to talk to you in person."
The negotiations went smoothly.
It ends in half an hour.
Elton's team members left the multi-person video call one after another, leaving only Lu Cheng's face on the screen. Han Zhan said, "Hang up."
"Why are you in such a hurry?"
"Burning wood."
"What?" Lu Cheng thought he had misheard.
"The power is out at Beishan Villa. My wife is afraid of the cold, so I lit a fireplace to keep her warm." Firewood has a limited lifespan and needs to be refilled regularly, otherwise it will go out. Han Zhan stood up and said, "I'm leaving now."
"Are you serious?"
"Do I look like a hypocrite?"
"I mean, are you serious about Shi Yin?" Lu Cheng couldn't believe it.
Han Zhan raised his eyebrows.
No words.
He couldn't choose his parents and siblings, but his wife was the one he chose. His first impression of Shi Yin was already good; otherwise, he wouldn't have registered with her even to satisfy the Han couple. Based on this good impression, she cared for Ah Xiu with all her heart, sincerely learning to make snow cake for his birthday, and openly defended him at Ms. Bai's birthday party, proving that he had procured the ruby ring.
As big as the construction of gardens.
As small as a ring.
So many things, big and small, had happened before, so many that Han Zhan had become numb, no longer caring about what others said or thought, and no longer holding out expectations of anyone. At this moment, Shi Yin stepped forward. Her power was so weak, yet so resounding, like a tiny stone, striking the lake of his heart, which had remained calm for years, creating ripples.
Is he serious about Shi Yin?
Han Zhan didn't know.
All he knew was that they were a married couple, that she was his only wife, and that he had a responsibility to care for and protect her. Plus, she was pretty, and he liked to tease her when he had nothing better to do; it was quite amusing.
After a long delay in hearing Han's reply, Lu Cheng continued, "Didn't you tell me before that Shi Yin agreed to marry you not just because you took advantage of Song Sinian's cheating and her excessive heartbreak? You said she had another motive, intending to step on your shoulders to get a promotion and a raise, and replace Shi Qinghe's position in the Shi Group."
"so what?"
"She has impure intentions and is not as kind as she appears to be."
"Isn't that nice?"
"Huh?" Lu Cheng didn't understand him.
"I'm a scumbag, she's a wicked woman, let's team up to avoid causing harm to others."
Lu Cheng: "..."
-
Shi Yin slept well that night.
If she dreams about sneezing all the time, it is probably because someone is scolding her behind her back.
Shi Yin stood up holding the quilt.
Rubbed the temples.
She tilted her head to look at the floor-to-ceiling window, where the light was shining. The white gauze curtains fluttered slightly, and the fireplace not far away was very eye-catching. She calmed herself, threw back the quilt, got out of bed, walked to the stove, and examined it carefully.
The fire inside has not yet completely gone out.
It's very warm when you get close to it.
No wonder she didn't feel cold last night when the power went out at Beishan Villa. She thought it was the extra quilt that was causing the problem, but she didn't realize it was the fireplace.
"Ma'am, are you awake?"
There was a knock from the housekeeper outside, and Shi Yin answered. Half a minute later, the housekeeper arrived at the bedroom door and said respectfully, "Madam, breakfast is ready. You can wash up and come downstairs to eat."
"good."
"Then I'll go out first and not disturb you anymore."
"Uncle Han." Shi Yin called him and gestured to the fireplace in front of him: "Are you helping me light it?"
"Mr. did it."
Shi Yin frowned.
The housekeeper then added, "Last night, as I was getting ready for bed, I saw the gentleman go to the backyard with an umbrella, get a lot of firewood, and start a fire in the vent. He said you were afraid of the cold, so he built a fireplace for you to keep you from catching a cold at night."
"This firewood can't burn all night, right?"
"Yes, we have to add firewood every two hours, so the gentleman rested in the master bedroom last night."
The butler said this and left the room.
Shi Yin stood there. She tilted her head to look at the sparks in the fireplace that had not yet gone out, then glanced at the movable rocking chair next to her, as if she had already seen Han Zhan sitting on it, guarding her all night.
