After the two children had tried on their dresses and came out hand in hand, Xia Liang was extremely gratified. She was able to provide her children with a comfortable life. Although their father was not around, he loved the children and her very much. Their grandparents did not discriminate against girls, and they would grow up happily in a loving family.
On the morning of the competition, Xia Liang woke up her two children early. The two children, still half asleep, rubbed their eyes and got up. Xia Liang took them to the bathroom to wash up, put on the new dresses she had made, and took them to a newly opened trendy hair salon. She had the hairdresser give the children a temporary perm, and then Xia Liang used cosmetics to give her eldest daughter a simple light makeup look before driving to the competition venue.
The competition was held in an auditorium. Xia Liang took the admission tickets and led her two children inside. She first handed her eldest daughter to the teacher in charge of the competition, then found a seat with her younger daughter and waited to watch her performance. The first to go on stage was a boy about the same age as her eldest daughter, who played "Castle in the Sky." The boy played very well, probably having practiced for many years. Gu Yunxi was sixth, playing "Canon in D." At her eldest daughter's request, Xia Liang took countless photos with her camera, while her younger daughter, Gu Yuanzhi, clapped enthusiastically.
Xia Liang watched as her daughter gracefully bowed to the audience to take her bow, and enthusiastic applause erupted from below. Little Gu Yunxi slowly stepped off the stage, and Xia Liang took her hand and led her to her seat. Xia Liang whispered to her daughter, "My darling, you played wonderfully." Little Gu Yunxi's face flushed slightly as she sat down next to her sister and continued watching the performance on stage.
After all the children had finished performing, the host went on stage to announce the competition results. Gu Yunxi came in second place, and the little boy who performed first came in first. Xia Liang secretly observed her daughter's face, trying to see if she was unhappy, but the little one seemed completely unaffected. She even whispered to her, "Mom, that boy is a classmate of ours. He's been practicing piano since he was little." Xia Liang nodded to indicate that she understood. She had originally wanted to comfort her daughter, but seeing that she wasn't bothered, she didn't say anything more.
After the performance, Xia Liang took her child to buy a piano. On their way out, they ran into the little boy who had won first place. Standing beside him was a poised and elegant woman, presumably his mother. The little boy greeted her first: "Gu Yunxi, I beat you today!" Xia Liang glanced at her daughter, who shrugged nonchalantly and said, "Always being number one is pretty boring. Getting second place occasionally is quite refreshing. Keep it up! Lu Jingang, I hope you get first place in your midterms." Xia Liang and Lu Jingang's mother exchanged a glance, both seeing smiles in each other's eyes.
Originally intending to leave with her child, Xia Liang was greeted by Lu Jingang's mother, Ning Mei, who approached her. "Hello, I'm Lu Jingang's mother, my name is Ning Mei." She extended her delicate, white hand, which Xia Liang returned. "Hello, I'm Gu Yunxi's mother, Xia Liang." Ning Mei smiled and said, "My son has always mentioned Yunxi, saying she's a very good student. I've always wanted to meet the parents who raised such an outstanding child and learn from you how to educate children." Xia Liang modestly replied, "Jingang is also a very smart and excellent child. Look, he just won first place in the competition!" Ning Mei laughed heartily, "Yunxi said that this kid only won one first place; the rest were won by Yunxi. I feel a strong connection with you; how about we go out for a meal?" Xia Liang was a straightforward person, and since this was the parent of her daughter's classmate, she couldn't refuse, so she nodded in agreement.
No one walked out of the auditorium. Cars were rare these days, and Xia Liang's car was parked right at the entrance. Ning Mei was quite surprised to see Xia Liang drive; although her family owned a car, she always had a driver take her, finding it troublesome, and rarely used it. Xia Liang drove, Ning Mei sat in the passenger seat, and the three children sat in the back. Xia Liang asked, "Children, what do you want to eat?" Gu Yuanzhi said, "I want roast duck." Xia Liang then asked, "Jing'ang, Yunxi, what do you want to eat?" Lu Jing'ang and Gu Yunxi both said, "Roast duck!" Xia Liang said, "Then let's go eat roast duck."
While waiting for the food at the restaurant, Ning Mei asked, "What do you do for a living, Comrade Xia?" Xia Liang replied modestly, "I'm self-employed; I own several shops." Ning Mei was filled with envy: "I've never worked. After graduating from high school, I married my husband, then gave birth to Jing Ang. After the college entrance examination was reinstated, I went to university, but I never really had time to work." As she spoke, she looked disappointed. Xia Liang didn't know how to comfort her. Although she didn't have a job, she didn't look like a housewife. After all, you could tell from her carefully maintained face and hands that she had never experienced hardship.
Ning Mei continued, "My husband always says that working is too tiring and that I should stay home and go shopping if I want, but there's no need for me to go to work." Hearing this, Xia Liang knew she was a very naive person. After all, anyone with a modicum of intelligence wouldn't say that working was too hard in front of a self-employed person, and judging from her expression, she didn't seem to be deliberately showing off. Xia Liang smiled but didn't say anything.
