When Gu Weiguo and Han Yulan went on vacation, it was already the end of the year. Xia Liang and Gu Yanxiao were waiting at the train station early in the morning. The two sisters originally wanted to come along, but it was too cold. When she and Gu Yanxiao came in the morning, even though they were wearing gloves, Gu Yanxiao's hands were still red from the cold. Since it was early, Xia Liang didn't call them.
After waiting for about an hour, Xia Liang thought they should be arriving soon, so she suggested to Gu Yanxiao, "I reckon we're almost there. You wait here, I'll go buy some hot food. I guess we haven't eaten much on the way." Gu Yanxiao looked at his thoughtful wife and reached out to warm his hands to stroke her face. "Forget it! It's not like we'll be gone in a minute. We'll be home soon, don't let yourself get too cold." Xia Liang slapped his hand away, glared at him, and pushed the cart away, leaving Gu Yanxiao standing there dumbfounded, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. The little ingrate, who was he doing this for? It was all because he was worried about her, afraid she'd get cold.
How could Xia Liang not understand her husband's good intentions? She simply wanted to be a dutiful daughter-in-law. She knew how good her in-laws were; they were genuinely kind to her and her two children, giving them almost all of their monthly salary and allowances. They would send money to their two granddaughters whenever they received their allowances. Although Xia Liang wasn't short of money, she felt she should appreciate their kindness. Buying some warm food for her in-laws was a small thing, but she believed they would feel it.
Sure enough, just as she returned from buying food, Gu Weiguo, Han Yulan, and Aunt Wu arrived at the station. As soon as Han Yulan got off the train, she shivered. Xia Liang draped a thick cotton-padded coat over her shoulders, then turned around and gave one to Gu Weiguo and another to Aunt Wu: "Dad, Aunt Wu, you two should put these on quickly. It's been especially cold these past few days, don't get too cold." Gu Weiguo did feel a bit cold, so he took the coat from his daughter-in-law and put it on. Xia Liang took out the soy milk and fried dough sticks she had just bought: "Mom and Dad, eat some while it's hot to warm yourselves up." Before the old couple could say anything, Gu Yanxiao said, "Oh dear! Anyone who didn't know better would think you're their daughter! I'm the unfilial son-in-law." Han Yulan and Gu Weiguo had just sat on the tricycle when they heard their son's words. Without a second thought, Han Yulan slapped him twice on the back: "That's right! You're our son-in-law, not at all considerate, unlike your wife who's such a sweet little cotton-padded jacket." After taking a sip of the soy milk her daughter-in-law had bought, Han Yulan felt much better. Aunt Wu also chimed in with a smile: "You're not satisfied with such a filial and considerate wife? You only feel good when your wife and your mother don't get along, and you're caught in the middle, right?" Aunt Wu had been in the Gu family for a long time, and Gu Yanxiao treated her as an elder, so she dared to say such things. Gu Yanxiao begged for mercy: "I won't, I won't." Xia Liang covered her mouth and chuckled.
All the way there, Xia Liang kept thinking about whether she should get a car. After all, she owned several factories, and going out in this weather without a car was really tough. Even adults felt uncomfortable, let alone her two children. But then she thought about how expensive cars were back then. A Santana cost around 200,000 yuan, while now you could buy a good courtyard house for 100,000 yuan. Trading two courtyard houses for a Santana seemed like a huge loss to Xia Liang, which was why she hadn't bought a car yet.
When they arrived home, Gu Yunxi and Gu Yuanzhi were already up. Xia Liang had recently given all her employees a holiday, except for a few in special positions who had to work, and she gave them triple overtime pay. Chen Yanling and her fellow apprentices had also gone home for the New Year. Liu Ma's background was similar to Wu Ma's, so she was staying with Xia Liang. The two little ones woke up and didn't see their parents, so they knew their parents had sneaked out to pick up their grandparents. They were a little angry, thinking they would ignore their parents when they returned and make them admit their mistake first.
When the adults arrived home, they saw the two sisters pouting, deliberately putting on a stern face and pretending to be angry. Gu Yanxiao greeted them, but they ignored him. It was Han Yulan who stepped forward and said, "What? It's only been half a year, and you don't recognize me?" The two little girls ran up and hugged Han Yulan's arms on either side, complaining sweetly, "Grandma, you should scold Mom and Dad! We agreed last night that we would go to the station to pick up Grandpa and Grandma today, but they sneaked away without telling us." Surrounded by her children and grandchildren, Han Yulan was overjoyed, but she knew she couldn't blame her son and daughter-in-law. "Your parents are doing this for your own good. You know what the temperature is outside. They're just worried about you and afraid you'll get cold." The two little ones knew this perfectly well; they just wanted to be pampered.
Seeing that the two girls were lingering by their mother-in-law's side, Xia Liang said, "You two should let Grandma rest. She's been traveling a long way and is very tired." Han Yulan waved her hand, "She's not tired at all. She's been sitting the whole way, so she's not tired." The two little ones also tactfully helped their grandmother to the sofa, one massaging her legs and the other her shoulders, which made Gu Weiguo quite envious! After massaging their grandmother for a while, the two little ones prepared to massage their grandfather. Gu Yanxiao, who was always trying to sabotage things, was also a little envious, but seeing his father's expression, his troublesome nature couldn't be changed, and he directly said, "Oh dear! You two sisters must be tired too, right? Go and rest for a bit, and bring your grandmother some cookies that your mother made yesterday." Gu Weiguo, who had adjusted his posture and was waiting for his granddaughters to massage his legs, thought, "..." You brat, I knew I shouldn't have had you.
Two little girls went to the kitchen and brought over cookies made by Xia Liang, handing them to their grandmother. "Grandma, try some of my mom's cookies, they're really delicious." Han Yulan reached out and took a piece, putting it in her mouth. It was indeed very tasty; the aroma of butter filled her mouth. Han Yulan praised, "They're so delicious! How did you make them?" Xia Liang smiled and said, "I saw them in a book before and wrote them down. I figured I had some free time lately, so I just made some for the kids as snacks." The two little girls then brought some to their grandfather and Grandma Wu. Even Gu Weiguo, who doesn't like sweets, ate two or three pieces. Grandma Wu said, "I've never had such delicious cookies." Hearing the praise for her mother, the little girl said proudly, "Grandma Wu, if you like them, ask my mom to make more another day." Grandma Wu smiled and nodded, "Oh, your mom is so busy!" Xia Liang smiled and said, "No trouble at all. I haven't been to the factory much lately." Ji Xiao hadn't been going to Yangcheng either, so Xia Liang had been taking a break.
