That day, Xia Liang received a letter from Gu Yanxiao. In the letter, he asked her if she was satisfied with the wedding gift he gave to her brother. He also asked how Xia Liang was doing lately and if she had missed him. He said he was thinking about Xia Liang all the time. Xia Liang couldn't help but smile sweetly. She thought that she should prepare a gift for him and make some clothes for him another day. That day after work, Xia Liang took the dresses that the girls from the provincial capital had asked her to make to deliver. At the agreed location and time, they met, exchanged money for the dresses, and both parties were very satisfied, saying they would definitely come back to her for future orders. Xia Liang was also very pleased. She said she was already a millionaire, but what was there to complain about with such simple and high-profit work? After receiving the money, Xia Liang went to the department store and went straight to the watch counter. She saw an imported watch that she liked; it cost a little over two hundred yuan without a receipt. Xia Liang liked it and paid for it readily. Seeing Xia Liang's generous spending, the salesperson continued to promote it: "Sir, is this a gift for a relative or your partner?" Xia Liang smiled and said, "For my partner." Seeing that Xia Liang paid over two hundred yuan without even blinking, the salesperson thought, "Even gifts for partners are this expensive?" "He's really rich," she thought, then continued, "How about we get one for our parents and siblings? We have many styles here, not just men's, but also women's. They're all new arrivals and quite beautiful." Xia Liang remembered that her parents didn't have watches yet, so she thought it would be a good idea to get one for each of them. Xia Liang went to look around again. Imported watches didn't require coupons but were expensive, while Shanghai brands were cheaper but required coupons. Xia Liang didn't have any coupons for watches, so she bought two imported ones, spending another four or five hundred yuan. Holding her newly bought watches, she continued browsing in the department store. Seeing that they were selling leather shoes, she bought three pairs: one pair for Gu Yanxiao, and two pairs for her parents. As for her brother and sister-in-law, her brother had much wider connections now, so getting these things should be easier for him than for her, so she didn't bother getting them for them. Xia Liang took what she bought that day to the post office and mailed everything, saving herself the trouble of bringing it to the family compound and getting caught and questioned. Xia Liang was too lazy to explain.
Zhao Weiting went home today, and Xia Liang, alone in the dormitory, lost her motivation to study. She took out her sewing basket and a piece of cloth to make clothes for Gu Yanxiao. Zhao Weiting didn't return until after 8 PM, bringing Xia Liang some sweet and sour pork ribs made by her mother, wrapped in oil paper. After Xia Liang finished eating, the two went outside to wash up. Upon returning, Xia Liang took out her textbooks to study. Zhao Weiting opened her bag and handed Xia Liang a stack of test papers: "My mom asked me to bring these to you. She was my high school teacher, and she has many high school test papers. These are the ones she thinks will be useful to you." Xia Liang was very touched by the thick stack, probably twenty or thirty pages, and took Zhao Weiting's hand, saying, "Thank you, Weiting, and thank you, Auntie, for going to so much trouble to prepare so many test papers for me." Zhao Weiting waved her hand dismissively, saying, "People are so restless these days..." Mom said that many students at school don't study hard. She likes people who love to study. After I told her about you, she insisted that I pass these things on to you and tutor you properly. In Zhao Weiting's mother's heart, Xia Liang is a pitiful but positive and hardworking person. There was no good learning environment at home in the countryside. She farmed at home until junior high school. Through her own efforts, she found a job in the city and is now a consultant in a garment factory in the provincial capital. But she did not slack off because of this. She still insists on reading and studying every day. It is hard for a teacher not to like such a hardworking person. So she not only prepared test papers for Xia Liang, but also prepared to highlight the key points for Xia Liang at home, waiting for her daughter to bring them to Xia Liang next time she comes home so that her daughter can help her study. She is at ease with her daughter having such a roommate. It is better than those who like cosmetics all day long.
Zhao Weiting found a test paper for Xia Liang to try. Xia Liang filled her pen with ink and started working on the questions. She had no problem with the multiple-choice questions, except for a few she couldn't remember. The later, more complex questions involved topics Zhao Weiting had covered, and Xia Liang answered them all correctly. Only a few questions hadn't been explained yet, and Xia Liang didn't know them, so Zhao Weiting copied them down and explained them to her separately. The two studied until 11 PM before realizing it was late, so they went to the bathroom and came back to sleep. Xia Liang thought about how fortunate she was to have met Zhao Weiting and her mother. She and Zhao Weiting were just roommates, and although they had a good relationship, it was truly rare for her to go to such lengths for her. Xia Liang drifted off to sleep with gratitude in her heart.
