When the little guy was four and a half, he ran to the kitchen after school and asked Aunt Wu, "Grandma Wu, is my mom back yet?" Aunt Wu put down the vegetables she was holding and said, "Little Yunxi is back? Your mom isn't back yet. What do you want to see your mom about?" The little guy went to the living room, threw his schoolbag on the sofa, and said, "I want a sister. I want my mom to give me a sister." Aunt Wu almost choked on her own saliva, wondering if she had misheard, and asked, "What did you say you wanted?" The little guy wasn't angry: "I want a sister." Aunt Wu didn't know what to say, so she just waited for Xia Liang to come back and give her a headache. Seeing that his grandparents and mother hadn't returned, the little guy turned on the TV and sat on the sofa to watch it.
After waiting and waiting, the door finally opened. The little girl slid off the sofa and ran to the door. Seeing that it was her grandmother, she lowered her head in disappointment and turned to go back to watching TV. Han Yulan, seeing her granddaughter's disappointed expression, grabbed her and said, "Sweetie, what's wrong? Why are you so disappointed in Grandma? Did something happen? Tell Grandma what's wrong, and Grandma will help you." The little girl instantly perked up, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Han Yulan and said, "Grandma, give me a sister!" Gu Weiguo, who was following behind, was almost startled by his granddaughter's words and fell down the steps, thinking he had misheard. But the little girl continued, "I want a sister! So many of my friends have sisters! I don't have one, or a brother would be fine too. Grandma, give me a sister." Han Yulan thought to herself, "I can't help you with that." Gu Weiguo nearly choked with laughter behind him. He stepped forward, picked up his little granddaughter, and explained, "Sweetie, your older brothers and sisters are born to your mom and dad. Your grandma can only have your aunt, understand? Your grandma is your dad's mother. She can only have your dad's older brothers, sisters, or younger brothers and sisters. Only your mom and dad can have younger brothers and sisters for you." The little one said, "I don't want younger brothers and sisters. They're too annoying. They just have runny noses and are all dirty. I don't want them. I only want older sisters, and older brothers are okay too!" Looking at the little one's reluctant expression, it was as if she could have them whenever she wanted. Gu Weiguo and Han Yulan were speechless.
When Xia Liang returned home, her little one walked up to her with her hands behind her back, looking at her expectantly: "Mommy, you're back?" Xia Liang half-squatted down and patted her head, saying, "Yes, sweetie, Mommy's home from get off work. What's up, baby?" The little one asked, "Mommy, do you think I'm good?" Xia Liang nodded: "Good, our sweetie is the best." The little one had a sly look on her face and said, "Then Mommy, can you give me a present?" Little Yunxi was even using tricks now. Xia Liang loved her daughter's little face: "As long as Mommy can do it, Mommy will grant your wish." Who knew the little one would say, "Then Mommy, give me a sister, as a present." Xia Liang "..." Xia Liang felt she needed to have a talk with her daughter, so she picked her up and faced her, saying, "Sweetie, people can't be given away as gifts. Everyone is an independent individual and shouldn't be materialized, understand?" The little one was confused: "What is materialization?" Xia Liang, thinking that her daughter was still young, said, "It means you can't treat people as objects to buy, sell, or give away, understand?" The little girl scratched her head and nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite. She continued, "Then, instead of a gift, can I just have a sister? A brother is fine too." Xia Liang patiently explained, "Sweetie, look, aren't older brothers and sisters the older children in every family? Their parents had older brothers and sisters first, and then younger brothers and sisters. So, the first ones born can only be older brothers and sisters; they can't be born later." Xiao Yunxi thought for a moment, and it seemed to make sense. Her neighbor, Xiaomi, was a younger brother; he had older brothers and sisters, and his older brothers and sisters were born first, while he was born later. The little girl looked disappointed. Seeing this, Xia Liang asked, "What's wrong, sweetie? Why do you suddenly want older brothers and sisters?" Xiao Yunxi said, "Their older brothers and sisters are all third and fourth graders, and they're so amazing!" Xia Liang asked, "How are they amazing?" The little girl looked at her with admiration, "Being in third or fourth grade is really amazing." Xia Liang was speechless. She didn't understand how third and fourth graders could be so amazing.
Seeing that she couldn't have an older brother or sister, the little one compromised, saying, "Then Mom, give me a little sister!" Xia Liang replied, "Dad isn't home, so let's not have one yet." Little Yunxi asked cutely, "Why does Dad have to be home? Mom, you should come first! Let's give Dad a surprise when he gets back." *Pfft!* Han Yulan, standing nearby, spat out a mouthful of water, followed by a violent coughing fit. Gu Weiguo quickly went to pat his wife's back. The little one, being filial, ran to her grandmother and asked, "Grandma, what's wrong?" Han Yulan hugged her granddaughter tightly and said, "Grandma's fine, but please don't say things like that anymore, my dear. Grandma's getting old, I can't take it!" She then went into the kitchen, afraid her granddaughter might say something outrageous again. Little Yunxi was left standing there, completely bewildered.
Every day after that, little Gu Yunxi would urge Xia Liang to give her a little sister; a brother wouldn't do, it had to be a sister. When asked why, she said that a sister would have long hair so she could braid it, and a brother was too naughty, always dirty, and she didn't like him. Xia Liang could only tell her to wait until her father came home, and the little one stopped constantly asking for a sister and started talking about her father instead. Every day after school, the first thing she would ask was if her father was home. One evening, Gu Yanxiao called home. After chatting with his parents for a few minutes, he started talking to Xia Liang. The little girl, hearing it was her father, tugged at her mother's sleeve and said, "Mommy, I want to talk to Daddy." Xia Liang could only tell Gu Yanxiao, "Your daughter wants to talk to you." She then held the phone to her daughter's ear. The little girl imitated an adult, saying, "Hello? Is this Daddy?" Gu Yanxiao, on the other end of the line, was almost melted by his daughter's sweet voice, repeatedly saying, "Yes, sweetie, it's Daddy." Then he heard his daughter ask, "Daddy, when are you coming back?" Gu Yanxiao's eyes welled up with tears. He thought his daughter missed him, and just as he was about to speak, he heard her say, "I want a little sister. Mommy said we have to wait for Daddy to come back. I told Mommy I wanted to give Daddy a little sister first as a surprise, but Mommy doesn't agree. Daddy, can you talk to Mommy and ask her to give me a little sister first?" Gu Yanxiao was speechless. This really wouldn't work! His daughter.
