8? Wilderness Survival

8 Wilderness Survival

◎The hunting wolves still haven't returned.◎

The wolf cubs played outside the cave for most of the day before, urged on by their pack mates, they returned, their fur damp as they twisted their chubby bodies to shake off the rain that had gotten on them. Their faces were adorable.

They shook their soft fur until it was half dry, and then continued to chase and play excitedly in the cave.

Ye Zhizhi's eyes turned red from watching this.

Aggrieved.

Young children are intuitive. When they sense that the atmosphere around them is safe and that they are being indulged and pampered, even the smallest emotion will be magnified infinitely.

This is what Ye Zhizhi is like now.

She felt that all the cubs had run out to play, leaving her alone in the nest... The baby felt wronged and wanted to cry.

It was Yin Yi who later noticed the cub above. It ran to Ye Zhizhi and licked her head, as if asking what was wrong?

Ye Zhizhi's whole aura was gloomy and melancholic. If it were an anime scene, you could see a small dark cloud above her head, with rain falling. She had no interest in responding to Yin Yi, and her eyes, filled with longing, kept staring at the direction of the cave entrance.

Yin tilted his head and stared at the wolf girl without blinking. He was in deep thought and suddenly realized something.

It turns out that Wolf Girl also wants to go out and play!

Yin Yi hadn't thought about this. After all, the wolf girl had forgotten how to walk, so how could she get out?

Yin Yi thought for a moment, then knelt down in front of Ye Zhizhi and turned to look at her.

“Ouch—”

After Ye Zhizhi's vision was blocked, he turned his gaze to Yin Yi. His red eyes blinked in confusion, and a crystal teardrop was stained on his thick and curved eyelashes.

Ginichi barked again, flicking his fluffy tail towards her, brushing her cheek.

Ye Zhizhi quickly understood what it meant. Her eyes lit up instantly and her whole body began to regain color.

“Ouch!”

She responded with a loud cry, and threw her small body onto Yin Yi. Soon, the whole cub was lying on Yin Yi's back. She held the wolf's neck with her small hands, and her short legs were tucked on both sides. She cried out softly and milkily twice: "Awooo~"

Brother Wolf, you are so nice! Brother Wolf, I am ready!

After Ye Zhizhi lay down, Yin Yi started to stand up.

Although it was two times bigger than Ye Zhizhi, it was only a cub of a few months old. Carrying the solid little cub on its back made its fat and short limbs tremble. It finally stood up and its limbs staggered for a few steps before it could stand steadily.

Ye Zhizhi looks small, but after eating, sleeping and exercising during this period, every piece of meat is substantial.

Yin Yi walked down with heavy steps. The old wolf next to him walked away after the cubs came back from letting out some fresh air, and no other wolf stopped them.

Yin Yi is usually very lively, but at this moment he looked particularly steady. He did not try to knock Ye Zhizhi down. Of course, it could also be that the burden was too heavy for him to be lively.

Ye Zhizhi lay on the wolf cub's sluggish back, hugging both sides of its neck, raised his head excitedly, and looked forward with his bright eyes.

She made it down the boulder and soon reached the flat ground where the cubs played most.

Seeing this, the three cubs ran over excitedly, circling around Yinyi and his sister, making a few childish howls.

Ye Zhizhi also responded with a howl.

Yin Yi remembered that the wolf girl wanted to go out and play, so he walked steadily towards the cave entrance.

The three cubs followed around, sometimes running in front and sometimes running behind. Sanbai, who looked more stable, followed steadily at the side, occasionally sweeping Ye Zhizhi's calf with his soft tail.

Ye Zhizhi smiled with joy, her pink gums showing.

After turning a cluster of stone pillars, the light ahead became brighter. Ye Zhizhi seemed to see a cave entrance glowing with light. Just as they were about to approach, a majestic low growl of warning suddenly sounded.

The cubs were startled and stopped instantly.

Two old wolves strode over, making short sounds from their throats.

Ye Zhizhi understood what they meant. They were trying to stop them from leaving.

Sure enough, Yinyi and the others were frightened. Erzhong and Xiaobai were already running back with their tails between their legs, and Sanbai also turned around slowly.

Ye Zhizhi pouted unhappily. Is it not okay for Brother Wolf to take her out?

Just as he was about to protest, Ye Zhizhi suddenly shuddered and sneezed.

She realized belatedly that the closer she got to the cave entrance, the lower the temperature became. She felt the chill. The temperature here was much lower than that on the side of the boulder.

The temperature has dropped?! Ye Zhizhi subconsciously turned his head to look at the cave entrance.

The old wolf growled again.

Yin Yi didn't know whether he was worried about the wolf girl or he didn't dare to resist. After hesitating for a moment, he turned in another direction and walked back with the wolf girl's heavy body on his back.

Ye Zhizhi didn't say anything this time. Her little face lay on the back of Yin Yi's neck, half of her face buried in the fur, and her expression was solemn.

Perhaps feeling guilty for not being able to take the wolf sister out, Yin Yi did not return to the den immediately, but instead walked around in the cave carrying the wolf sister on his back.

As long as they don't go out, the wolves will not stop the cubs from moving around in the den.

Seeing this, Ye Zhizhi temporarily put aside his worries and carefully observed the cave environment.

The view she saw from the boulder was actually only a rough outline. The stone pillars, boulders, and uneven terrain all created many blind spots. Now she saw many large pits and could see clearly that there were indeed two dim passages in the cave.

Before Yin Yi had finished walking through the entire cave, his limbs had already begun to tremble, and he had obviously reached his limit. Ye Zhizhi could feel the flesh of the wolf brother under her trembling. She whimpered softly, signaling the wolf brother to return to the den.

Yin Yi turned around and went back to his nest. He insisted on returning to the dry grass nest before putting Ye Zhizhi down.

Yin Yi lay sprawled in the grass nest, his mouth wide open and breathing rapidly, looking exhausted.

Ye Zhizhi climbed down from Yin Yi's back, lay down beside Wolf Brother, and rubbed his head against him to express his gratitude.

Although she was worried about something and couldn't muster up any interest, and she failed to successfully leave the cave, she was still very grateful to Brother Wolf for taking her to relax in the cave.

Yin Yi was obviously very happy, his tail was wagging, and he responded by licking Ye Zhizhi's face with saliva.

The two cubs lay side by side in the nest, looking very harmonious. Yin Yi seemed to have exhausted all his energy. He lay there with his eyes closed, only flicking his tail from time to time.

Ye Zhizhi turned over and lay next to Yin Yi. She couldn't sleep and her heart was extremely heavy.

How could she not have thought of that?

Why didn’t you think of that?

If the previous rainy season was autumn, then the coming one is winter.

Ye Zhizhi looked at his cold-resistant tools.

A nest of dry grass, a thin little quilt, a thin little pure cotton coat, even if you count the two automatic constant temperature blankets, one large and one small, that belong to Wolf Mother and Wolf Brother...

How could she survive the entire winter with such little warmth? How could she possibly survive the cold winter? Even a temperature of just over 10 degrees Celsius could easily kill her fragile body.

Ye Zhizhi didn't dare to hope that the winter here would be as warm as the spring in the south. A heavy rain would last for more than two months, and when winter came, who knew what would happen.

No matter how constant the temperature in the cave is, Ye Zhizhi is not optimistic. She doesn't dare to hope that the temperature will remain at this level when winter really comes.

No wonder the wolves didn't let her go out. Before she even felt the change in temperature, the seasons had already changed outside.

But she had no fur to keep her warm, so she could easily catch a cold. In this desolate wilderness where there was no medicine, if Ye Zhizhi fell ill, it would be more difficult than undergoing a tribulation.

Ye Zhizhi looked around again. Although it was in a sheltered place, the cave was too big. It might not be very warm in winter.

Ye Zhizhi was worried.

She couldn't figure out how to solve this impending dilemma.

Even if she had an idea, she, a cub who hadn't even learned to crawl, couldn't put it into action.

Ye Zhizhi was a little panicked and subconsciously wanted to hug Wolf Mother. However, Wolf Mother had gone out hunting with the wolf pack and had not returned yet, so she had to hug Wolf Brother for comfort.

She had survived such a serious illness, and a human cub was also alive and well among the wolves, not being eaten. Could it really be possible to freeze to death?

Ye Zhizhi comforted himself, thinking that things would work out in the end.

...I still miss my mother.

When will Wolf Mother come back?

Ye Zhizhi was looking forward to it, but until night fell, it was dark for a long time, and the wolves did not come back.

At first, Ye Zhizhi could still comfort himself that winter was coming, the days would be shorter and the nights would be longer, and it would get dark early.

Ye Zhizhi waited until late at night, but did not hear any sign of the wolves returning.

As if sensing Ye Zhizhi's uneasiness, Yin Yi stuck close to Ye Zhizhi, licking her head with his wolf tongue. His fluffy wolf tail folded back for her to hold, and he made a few soothing sounds from time to time.

Ye Zhizhi waited until he could no longer bear it before falling asleep with an uneasy heart.

When she woke up, it was already bright outside, and the first thing she did was look around.

The hunting wolves still haven't returned.

This was the first time since she woke up that the hunting wolves did not return overnight.

Ye Zhizhi was very worried. He didn't know what was going on with the wolves. Did they run away because there was no more prey nearby, or did they encounter difficulties while hunting?

Among the remaining wolves, no other wolf showed any anxiety about the pack not returning for a long time, except her, as if they were used to it, which made Ye Zhizhi seem to be worrying too much.

She had no choice but to let go of her worries.

Yin Yi, who was fluttering around boredly, saw Ye Zhizhi wake up. He happily wagged his tail, nudged her with his head, and then lay down in front of her.

When Ye Zhizhi saw this, she knew that Yin Yi was waiting here specifically to carry her down to play.

Ye Zhizhi's heart felt warm. How could Brother Wolf be so nice?

But just as she was about to pounce, she found that her hands and feet were weak and she had no strength.

Ye Zhizhi's stomach was sending out hunger signals. She remembered that she hadn't eaten for a day and a night. Last night, she was so focused on worrying about the wolves and the possible cold weather that she ignored her body's needs.

So hungry!

Realizing this, Ye Zhizhi felt even more weak. She decided not to play anymore and rejected Wolf Brother's invitation.

Yin turned his head to look at her and urged her in a low voice, as if he was puzzled. After a long time without the wolf sister climbing up, he stood up and lowered his head to nod to Ye Zhizhi.

Ye Zhizhi whimpered weakly.

She couldn't play anymore. In case Wolf Mother didn't come back today, she had to conserve her energy and reduce consumption.

Ye Zhizhi had experienced being hungrier before, and could still bear the hunger she felt now, but she didn't know how long she could endure it.

Maybe it had been a long time since they saw Yinyi and his sister coming down, so the three cubs ran up happily, nudging Yinyi and Ye Zhizhi, urging them to come down quickly and play together.

Ye Zhizhi refused again.

Seeing that the other two couldn't be summoned, the three cubs started chasing and playing around, eventually rolling down the boulder and running to play below. Yinyi didn't join in the fun. He lay beside the wolf sister, looking at her suddenly weakened with concern, whimpering from time to time.

Ye Zhizhi responded at first, but as time passed, she gradually stopped responding.

So hungry, so hungry...

Every cell in her body was clamoring for food. Ye Zhizhi felt that she didn't have to worry about freezing to death because she might starve to death before that.

Yin Yi nudged Ye Zhizhi, becoming even more anxious and worried. The wolf girl's current condition reminded him of her unconscious state some time ago. Could the wolf girl be sick again?

Yin Yi was so anxious that he turned around in circles. Then, as if he suddenly remembered something, he stood on the edge of the boulder, raised his head and howled—

“Ouch—”

After a while, the old wolf who stayed behind appeared on the boulder.

"Aoaowu——" Yin Yizhao whimpered anxiously at the old wolf, wanting it to help look after the wolf sister.

The old wolf lowered his head and sniffed Ye Zhizhi. He didn't smell anything unusual, but seeing her weak appearance, a flash of enlightenment appeared in his eyes.

It gave a low cry and turned away from the boulder.

Yin Yi seemed to understand what it meant and lay down to watch it leave.

Not long after, the old wolf came back with something in its mouth. Upon closer inspection, she realized that it was a piece of raw meat that had been left there for who knows how long. Although there were no worms in it, she could smell a slight odor of decay.

This piece of raw meat, hidden by someone unknown, was placed in front of Ye Zhizhi by the old wolf.

"vomit--"

A fishy smell penetrated her nostrils. Realizing that it was food for her, Ye Zhizhi had no appetite at all and instead felt like vomiting.

She would rather starve to death than eat this raw meat!

vomit--

She backed away, and the resistance gave her the strength to move to another position and continue lying.

Ye Zhizhi tilted his head and retched several times, but nothing came out.

Yin Yi tilted his head, very confused. Why didn’t the wolf girl eat?

The old wolf was also puzzled. This was the food it had saved specially, so why didn't it eat it?

Tears welled up in Ye Zhizhi's eyes. Even if she endured the nausea and ate it, she couldn't bite it. She was still a little kid without teeth. She was afraid that if she ate it, she would report to the King of Hell even faster.

Ye Zhizhi turned her head and showed her pink gums to Laolang.

The old wolf realized that although this strange-looking little wolf cub was more than a hundred days and nights old, she could only drink milk and not eat meat.
