Shen Mingzhuang's heart tightened immediately, and soon a voice came from the doorway.
"Young master."
It was Shuangyue! Shen Mingzhuang breathed a sigh of relief and opened the door.
Shuangyue stood at the door, and a gust of wind rushed into the room as she opened the door. She was carrying a quilt in her arms. She looked at Shuangyue with some confusion, and Shuangyue quickly explained, "Young master, it's raining. I was afraid you would get cold, so I brought you a quilt."
So it turned out he was worried she was cold. Shen Mingzhuang was relieved and smiled as he thanked Shuangyue, but he didn't take the blanket: "It's not cold in my room. One blanket is enough. I'm afraid it will be too hot if I take more."
Shuangyue knew that the Empress was not a delicate person. Hearing this, she smiled shyly, hugged the quilt tighter, nodded, and was about to say something when Shen Mingzhuang suddenly pulled her into the room. The door closed softly, almost without a sound.
Shuangyue had no idea what was happening outside. She was only startled by the Empress's sudden action. Shen Mingzhuang made a shushing gesture, and Shuangyue understood. She stood quietly in place without making a sound.
Shen Mingzhuang's attention was entirely focused on the next room. She heard the person walk to the door, seemingly about to leave, but then, perhaps noticing someone at the door, they went back inside. It was quite strange.
Shen Mingzhuang remained motionless, trying her best to minimize her presence. She didn't know if the person next door had noticed her presence, but for the next fifteen minutes, the surroundings were quiet, and the person didn't move. It was very likely that they were also paying attention to the movements outside, just like her.
Their group of over twenty people was bound to attract a lot of attention along the way, and their stay at the inn would definitely alarm the other guests. She just didn't know why the person next door made her feel that he was wary of them.
She suddenly remembered the strong smell of blood; the people next door were acting strangely.
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, she suddenly thought of He Wenqing. She lived here, but He Wenqing lived in a separate room. She had the ability to protect herself, but she didn't know if He Wenqing had the ability to protect himself. Shen Mingzhuang thought that the most important thing about this trip was to take He Wenqing back, and she immediately became a little worried.
In case someone makes a bad move against He Wenqing, is it possible for He Wenqing to protect herself or call for help in time? Everyone has been exhausted for several days and can finally get some rest. She dares not entrust He Wenqing's safety to Benyue Lingfeng and the others.
Even tigers have their moments of weakness, so tonight must be the time when security is at its weakest. If anyone doesn't want He Wenqing to rescue Jiang Wang, tonight is the perfect opportunity to make their move.
Shen Mingzhuang immediately felt alarmed, and her fatigue receded like a receding tide. She glanced at Shuangyue, signaling her to stay put, and then slipped out the door.
She moved so fast that Shuangyue didn't even have time to see clearly before Shen Mingzhuang's shadow disappeared.
He Wenqing's door was closed, so he must be resting now.
Everyone in the inn had already retired for the night, and there wasn't a single lamp lit. The soft sound of rain reached her ears. Shen Mingzhuang didn't dare to knock on the door. If she did, she would surely disturb others in such a quiet environment, and she didn't want to alert them.
He Wenqing was getting on in years, and after being frightened and stimulated several times yesterday, he was already exhausted. It was already a struggle for him to come out of Qingmao Mountain, and several imperial guards had to take turns carrying him on their backs on the way to the post station.
Otherwise, his old bones would probably have fallen apart long ago.
He Wenqing was fast asleep and didn't hear the soft rustling sound of the door bolt being pried open. Once the bolt was released, Shen Mingzhuang immediately threw the hairpin back into his spatial storage and slipped into the room.
The room was pitch black. Shen Mingzhuang fastened the door bolt again in the darkness and turned to look at He Wenqing.
He Wenqing was fast asleep at the moment. If someone with malicious intentions were to enter now, they could be killed without any effort.
Shen Mingzhuang belatedly broke out in a cold sweat. Hearing the long, even breathing, she turned and hid behind the curtain.
In private, everything was quiet; she wondered if she had guessed wrong.
No matter what, she absolutely could not let anything happen to He Wenqing before He Wenqing saved Jiang Wang.
Even if she was overthinking it, it's still better than regretting it later due to a moment of carelessness.
Shen Mingzhuang hid behind the curtain and soon became tired. Just then, a soft rustling sound came from outside.
The rustling sound was different from the sound of rain; it was a rhythmic sound, much like the sound of her using a hairpin to loosen the door latch earlier.
Shen Mingzhuang's alarm bells went off immediately, and she perked up instantly. It seemed her guess was right; someone was indeed watching this area.
Judging from the commotion, there should only be one person coming. Who is so confident that they can easily kill He Wenqing and escape from so many top-level experts?
She even had a guess that most of the people who came were related to the Duke of Wen's Mansion and the Duke of Wei's Mansion, and the most likely candidate was Song Yi's people.
Hearing the bolt being pushed open completely, Shen Mingzhuang's back straightened. Very faint footsteps accompanied the sound of the door being pushed open.
Shen Mingzhuang's instep also straightened, ready to rush out and subdue the person at any moment.
But to her surprise, the man was incredibly bold. Before he even reached the bedside, he spoke up, "Senior He Wen."
The strong smell of blood hit her nostrils, and the man's voice reached her ears.
Shen Mingzhuang was struck dumb, and pulled his foot back as if he had been electrocuted. How could it be Song Yi?!
