Chapter 21 More People Arrive at the Palace

"Eighth Miss, Ninth Miss, and Seventh Miss have already returned."

The maid stepped forward and replied with a smile, followed by Shen Mingxi's laughter.

"Let the sisters wait. I have a bit of a headache, so I went to the meditation room to rest for a while. But I forgot the time and we've been delayed. It's getting late, let's go back."

Shen Ming'e frowned upon hearing this. What did she mean by going to the delivery room to rest? She had asked the nun herself, and Shen Mingxi had indeed gone to the back mountain. She had seen it with her own eyes and thought that Shen Mingxi had just gone to see the scenery there. She hadn't expected that Shen Mingxi had lied!

Shen Mingzhuang gently wiped the corner of his mouth with a handkerchief to hide his smile.

By the time they returned to the mansion, it was already dusk.

The three of them went to Shou'an Hall to pay their respects. They presented the amulets that they had obtained for the old lady that day. Shen Mingxi seemed to be in a very good mood today. She smiled and leaned close to the old lady and said, "These amulets have been blessed in front of the Buddha. I made a wish in front of the Buddha, hoping that the Buddhist beads will protect my grandmother and bring her good fortune, longevity, peace and prosperity!"

The old lady loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Hearing the auspicious words, she was also happy. She immediately had someone bring over some pastries, saying, "These are rose pastries bestowed upon us by the palace."

Upon hearing the words "palace," Shen Mingzhuang's breath hitched slightly.

These snacks were a gift from the palace, which means that people from the palace have been here in the past two days.

Whenever someone from the palace came, they would always visit her. Although they all disguised themselves as servants from the Wen family, the gifts they brought were all bestowed by the palace, chosen to show how much Jiang Wang cared for her.

"Mingzhuang, the Wen family sent some fabric over today. If you have time, please go to their residence to express your gratitude. Don't let them say that our Shen family's daughter doesn't know how to behave."

These reprimands calmed the suspicious people in the room.

This lack of understanding of the rules is likely a veiled criticism.

The old lady has a sharp tongue; she can always make you blush with embarrassment.

However, this had no effect on Shen Mingzhuang. She curtsied and smiled in agreement, and this time she did not invite her sisters to go to her courtyard to choose fabrics.

Some things can be too much or too little. She had only wanted to see how these people would treat her before, but now she knew the good and the bad. She didn't plan to continue sending these things; it was a thankless task.

Shen Mingxi and Shen Ming'e hadn't expected that even though they were all from the same household, they hadn't gotten any benefits from Shen Mingzhuang. After leaving Shou'an Hall, the two put aside what had happened at Daci Temple that day and started whispering to each other.

“Why is Ninth Sister so stingy now? Before, she would always share the good things with us. Now she knows how to keep things to herself. It’s not the same as the bond we had when we grew up together. If it were me, I would never forget you, sister.”

Shen Ming'e was still quick-witted and outspoken. Shen Mingxi didn't scold her, but just nodded in agreement and encouraged her to continue.

As Shen Ming'e got more and more excited, she looked up and realized that the stingy and petty person she was talking about was standing not far in front of her.

"Ninth... Ninth Sister?"

Shen Ming'e was caught red-handed talking badly about someone behind their back, and she almost died on the spot.

"Seventh Sister, Eighth Sister".

Shen Mingzhuang greeted the two as usual, as if she hadn't heard anything. Seeing Shen Ming'e in a daze, she asked with a smile, "What are you two talking about?"

"No, you misheard." Shen Ming'e scratched her head, smiling somewhat awkwardly.
