The group followed Chen Jianguo out of the educated youth compound and, sure enough, saw another building next to it. It was much smaller than the educated youth compound, and inside, in addition to the two small rooms Chen Jianguo had mentioned, there was a small courtyard. The building looked even more dilapidated than the educated youth compound.
Qin Xue fell in love with it at first sight, "I want to live here."
Fearing that Gu An'an and Zhou Yue would fight over her, she even wanted to just lie on the kang (heated brick bed), but there was a thick layer of dust on the kang, so she couldn't just go up there.
She thought that as long as she spoke quickly, the room would be hers, but then she heard Chen Jianguo say, "If you want to live in this house, you have to pay some money to the village."
"What? They want money too? Are they desperate for money?"
Seeing her speak so recklessly, Chen Jianguo frowned. "Comrade Qin, you should watch your words. This is a village. It wouldn't be good if the villagers heard you."
Chen Jianguo was considerate of her, but Qin Xue didn't appreciate it. She didn't say it out loud, and no one cared about her inner turmoil.
Gu An'an was quite satisfied with the house. It was a bit small, but it was the best choice for her at the moment.
Five yuan a room.
It wasn't that no one wanted to live there before, but not only did they have to pay, they also had to prepare firewood for the winter, fetch water, and cook their own meals. It wasn't as easy as living in the educated youth compound, so it remained vacant.
Zhou Yue was tempted by the prospect of living separately from that disgusting woman Qin Xue for just five yuan.
"An'an, how about we each stay in a room? That way we can keep each other company."
Gu An'an didn't care; all she wanted was her own little space.
Without further ado, the two left their belongings at the educated youth compound and, led by Chen Jianguo, went to the village chief's house.
Village Chief Wang, also known as Old Wang by others, is actually only in his early forties. He is one of only two people in the village who can drive a tractor. The original tractor driver was unwell, so he made the trip himself, his hands and feet freezing cold.
The village chief's wife was very distressed and quickly fetched water for him to wash his face and soak his feet, which helped him recover.
"How are the educated youth who came this time?"
Village Chief Wang frowned involuntarily as he recalled the events of the day. "Two of them seemed alright, but the others..."
Although nothing was said, the disdain was quite obvious.
Before the village chief's wife could ask any more questions, a knock came from outside the courtyard.
Is the village chief home?
