"Wow, this place is so beautiful! What kind of flowers are growing in the water? I've never seen them before."
Whether it's farmland or waterways, everything in the village is meant to serve production; there's no way they'd plant these impractical things. You can imagine how excited the village chief's wife was when she saw them.
"Aunt, these are lotus flowers. We arrived just in time. If we had come any later, we might not have been able to see so many lotus flowers blooming in competition."
The village chief's wife thought every flower was beautiful. She carefully touched the plump buds, her delight evident in her expression.
"There are lotus roots under these flowers. Lotus roots are also a good dish. Some southern provinces produce a lot of them. You can make countless delicacies just from lotus roots."
Thinking of the food videos she saw online in her later life, Gu An'an felt a little hungry.
There are many things in the space, but there really is no lotus pond. That body of water is bare. If there is a chance, I can get some seeds to plant in the space. I can enjoy it when I have time, and I can also dig up lotus roots to eat. It's a win-win situation.
“Auntie, squat down in front of that lotus flower and cover half of your face with it, and I’ll take a picture of you.”
The village chief's wife didn't understand why there were so many actions involved in taking a picture, but since Gu An'an had said so, she cooperated unconditionally.
"Yes, that's it, turn your body slightly to the side, good!"
“Auntie, stand up and take a picture with your arms outstretched. Come on, smile.”
......
And so, the village chief's wife was completely at her beck and call, and then a series of "clicks" could be heard.
"That's enough, that's enough, you two can stop filming."
The village chief's wife had no right to keep it all to herself. Although it was borrowed, she had heard that developing photos cost money.
Gu An'an and her husband took a photo together, but the village chief's wife didn't know how to use that thing, so she had no choice but to ask a passerby for help. Fortunately, there was a boy nearby who knew how, and he enthusiastically helped them take a lot of photos.
Just as they were about to change locations, a domineering female voice rang out from the side.
"You bastard, I told you to bring it here right now! Look at the time!"
"What's with that look on your face? Are you unhappy with me? Don't forget who gave you food and allowed you to survive until now. If it weren't for my family's help, you would have starved to death long ago. So no matter when, as long as I need you, you have to obey unconditionally, do you hear me!"
The moment the word "bastard" was uttered, the people who were happily playing around unconsciously frowned; it really ruined the beautiful moment.
Gu An'an and the other two were no exception.
When they looked toward the source of the noise, they saw a brightly dressed girl yelling at a skinny boy. The boy was wearing tattered, patched clothes and looked to be only thirteen or fourteen years old. He was looking down, seemingly lost in thought.
"This girl has gone too far. Even if she has done someone a favor, she shouldn't treat them like this."
But this wasn't her family's business, or even the village's business. She couldn't just go up and do ideological work like she would in the village. After all, this was the city, full of people with money and power. She couldn't cause trouble for Gu An'an and her husband because of others.
Just as she was frowning and preparing to ignore it, the girl went even further.
Seeing that the boy didn't speak, the girl felt that he hadn't listened to what she had just said, and her anger intensified. She reached out and slapped the boy across the face, "Why aren't you saying anything? Are you mute?!"
Seeing this, the village chief's wife finally lost her temper and took two steps forward, berating the girl, "What's wrong with you, girl? Someone kindly brought you something and you hit them. That's too much!"
The girl was surprised that someone would meddle in her affairs. Her eyes swept over the village chief's wife. Although the village chief's wife had changed into new clothes before leaving home, she had done farm work for so many years, and it was easy to tell whether she was from the city or not.
The girl curled her lips into a mocking smile. "You country bumpkin, what business is it of yours if I talk to him? Get lost."
As she spoke, she reached out to push the village chief's wife, but the boy stopped her.
"Thank you, Auntie, but this is none of your business. You can go now."
Several people had spoken up for him, but they were all scolded by his uncle's family and dared not get involved in his family's mess anymore.
Xu Nian has been living this kind of life of constant beatings and scoldings for the past few years, and he has long been used to it. He doesn't mind being beaten and scolded, but he doesn't want to implicate innocent people.
"Did you hear that? You country bumpkin, they don't appreciate your kindness, get lost."
Then Xu Nian said, "Xu Nian, you actually dare to stop me? Fine! I don't have time to waste here with you. You'll see when we get back!"
The girl had arranged to meet her friends here and didn't want to waste any more time, since she knew she'd have plenty of opportunities to teach them a lesson.
She left without noticing that the village chief's wife was staring blankly at the boy's face.
"Auntie, thank you for speaking up for me just now."
The boy politely thanked him and was about to leave; he had many things to do and didn't have time to waste here.
But just as he was about to leave, someone grabbed his arm.
"Child, what's your name?"
"Xu Nian".
How big?
Xu Nian thought for a moment and said, "18."
Actually, he wasn't quite sure either. He had been living in a daze for the past few years, forgetting the speed of time, and only wanted to raise his younger sister.
"18, single eyelids, a mole at the end of her eyebrow..."
The village chief's wife muttered to herself, her eyes filled with even greater excitement.
"Auntie, what's wrong?"
Xu Nian didn't understand why the woman in front of him would show such an expression, but deep down he didn't reject the feeling.
The village chief's wife grabbed his arm and said, "Child, can I see your left hand?"
