Chapter 41 Climbing the mountain alone

If a man comes out of the neighbor's yard early in the morning, and so quickly, as if he's afraid of being discovered, then there's definitely something fishy going on.

Qin Xue walked casually toward the girls' dormitory, a series of thoughts flashing through her mind.

She didn't dare to confront him directly, fearing that Gu An'an might attack without warning. But isn't there a saying, "to kill with a borrowed knife"?

Having a sharp knife is one thing, but how to borrow that knife is another.

It would be best if it could be a fatal blow, completely ruining Gu An'an and Zhou Yue's reputation. If not, it could at least sow seeds of doubt in the hearts of the villagers, or at the very least cause them some trouble, but one must extricate oneself from the situation.

"Qin Xue, what are you doing? Are you out of your mind in broad daylight? You're walking like a sleepwalker."

As Qin Xue was thinking, she unconsciously slowed her footsteps. When Li Yumei opened her eyes, she saw this scene and was almost startled. Her tone unconsciously carried a hint of resentment.

Sleepwalking?

Qin Xue's heart raced. It was like a godsend. She didn't need to sleepwalk, but she could talk in her sleep. If anyone overheard something and then made up their own thoughts and spread it, they wouldn't be able to blame her.

Thinking of this, Qin Xue decided to get on the kang (a heated brick bed) and pretend to sleep, and maybe even talk in her sleep.

But it was already time to get up, and some people were getting ready, while others were cooking, so it was really impossible to get things moving right away.

There was nothing she could do but restrain herself; those who accomplish great things don't concern themselves with trifles, and she would deal with everything later that night.

Gu An'an had no idea that Qin Xue was up to something again, but she didn't really care about the group of people next door; they were just people she would greet when she met them.

These past two days, I've either been going to the commune or staying in bed. Occasionally, I've been busy in the space with the help of large machinery, and I feel like I have inexhaustible energy.

After baking a few sticky flatbreads and reheating the leftovers from the previous night, Gu An'an knocked on the door, told Zhou Yue, locked the door, and left.

Behind Xiaowang Village is a big mountain. Although there is still snow, it is no problem for Gu An'an, who has experienced extreme cold and heat.

Moreover, the weather was clearly starting to turn spring-like, so Gu An'an thought about going for a walk in the mountains.

The educated youth compound was located at the foot of the back mountain, some distance from the villagers' houses. Gu An'an didn't see a single person until she entered the mountain.

As soon as she entered a birch forest, Gu An'an saw several white Ganoderma lucidum mushrooms. This thing is a Chinese medicine, and it should be worth a few boards.

Of course, she wasn't short of money, but with nothing else to do, hiking in the mountains was a great option.

Finding a fallen tree trunk, Gu An'an removed its branches, held it high, and poked at the white lingzhi mushroom. A large piece of the white lingzhi mushroom successfully broke free of its restraints and fell straight down.

Gu An'an had good eyesight. As she repeated this action, pieces of white Ganoderma lucidum kept falling down, and soon she had collected a large bag of them.

After all the large pieces of white Ganoderma lucidum had been removed, Gu An'an put the bag into her spatial storage and continued walking inside.

Before long, in the vast expanse of white, Gu An'an spotted a string of small footprints. Judging by their clarity, they had probably just walked there.

Following the direction of the footprints, Gu An'an soon discovered two silly creatures with their heads buried in the snow. They had brightly colored fur, plump bodies, and tails held high, as if they were taunting Gu An'an, "Come and catch me, come and catch me!"

Gu An'an certainly didn't hold back. She was still able to move swiftly through the snow. When she grabbed the two pheasants by their tails and flung them into her spatial dimension, they were still dazed.

Wasn't it supposed to be a snowy wonderland? How come it's suddenly spring all year round?

Without giving it much thought, they discovered there was more food in this place, so they happily formed a group and went to forage.

With the pheasant, the whole trip wasn't for nothing. Gu An'an continued her search, even more excited to see how interesting the forest would be after the snow melted.

Before the apocalypse, besides going to school and doing research, she spent her time reading novels and watching interesting short videos. Beachcombing and mountain climbing were her absolute favorites. Otherwise, she wouldn't have spent money to change her rural address. She just wanted to come here and experience it properly.

Gu An'an's eyes were like searchlights, scanning left and right, not missing any suspicious details.

Persistence pays off. Following the animals' trail, Gu An'an successfully captured another litter of rabbits—two large and three small. The large ones could be eaten or sold, while the small ones could be raised further, perhaps even branching out and expanding their numbers within the space.

After spending two hours in the mountains, all they caught were little creatures. To be honest, Gu An'an was a little disappointed.

The heroine in the novel encounters a wild boar when she goes into the mountains and a lingzhi mushroom when she comes out of the mountains.

And what about her? It's not that she doesn't have Ganoderma lucidum, it's just that she added "white" before Ganoderma lucidum.

But she's been wandering around for so long, surely she should at least get a baby wild boar, if not a father or mother? Anyway, she has space to raise them, and once they're grown up, they'll be a delicious dish.

They did see a few wild boar tracks, but the trail ended as they continued. If they kept chasing, they probably wouldn't know which village they were going to, so Gu An'an stopped and started walking back according to her memory.

Suddenly, her ears twitched, and after confirming the direction, she took off running in the direction of the sound.

The sound grew closer and louder. Gu An'an, like a nimble monkey, climbed up the branches of the big tree and looked down the hillside. There, a man was putting on a show of fighting two wild boars.

The man was physically strong and skilled, but he was now facing two large, fat wild boars. It was almost impossible for him to win quickly. All he could do now was try to buy time and find an opportunity to escape.

Gu An'an originally didn't want to get involved. Those who dared to come to the deep mountains were all looking for some wild game and money, otherwise they wouldn't risk their lives. Since they had something to gain, they naturally had to make some sacrifices. It was all a matter of fate for each person.

Moreover, the other party is quite skilled. Even if they can't bring these big guys back, escaping won't be a problem. It's none of her business.

She was tired from walking, so Gu An'an took out a few strawberries from her spatial storage and ate them while watching the battle below.

Once she's finished eating, the man will have escaped successfully, and she might even be able to pick up some leftovers.

Gu An'an was feeling quite pleased with herself, but her wonderful idea was shattered the next second.

"Brother, give me a hand, I'll share half of the stuff with you."

Gu An'an stopped chewing and saw that the person was looking in her direction while hitting her, obviously having noticed her presence.

That's good, that's a good level of alertness.

It was at this moment that Gu An'an realized that the person below was actually a somewhat familiar stranger, Zhao Hu. Why was he familiar? Of course, it was because they had eaten together before, but Zhao Hu hadn't said a single word the entire time. According to Chen Jianguo and the others, this person was capable but aloof and difficult to get along with.

Now that she'd been discovered, Gu An'an naturally didn't intend to continue hiding, but splitting it in half was out of the question.

"You have to be sincere when asking someone for help."
