Chapter 30 Don't Try to Guess a Man's Thoughts

Zhou Yue slept until the sun was high in the sky, skipping breakfast altogether. This is quite common in Northeast China during winter, since cats don't do any housework anyway.

I eat breakfast late, dinner early, and go to bed early when I have nothing to do, so I don't feel hungry.

Hearing that the village chief had arranged for people to repair their houses, Zhou Yue quickly got up to check the situation.

"Oh my! I'll finally have my own room. I didn't sleep well last night."

Gu An'an: Didn't sleep well? Once the snoring stopped, she could finally convince herself to believe her nonsense.

Upon hearing Gu An'an say that she would be paid, Zhou Yue immediately went back to her room to get the money. Wang Erniu hadn't even finished his work when he received the money. He scratched his head, feeling a little embarrassed.

"I'll build you a firewood shed. You can put the firewood you bring in here. Is that alright?"

He was only supposed to be repairing the roof, but he took on extra work for himself. No wonder the village chief said he was honest.

"Okay, I'll do whatever Brother Erniu says."

After a busy day, Erniu could already see a clear difference. Once he fixed up the kang (heated brick bed) and chimney, and built a firewood shed, the two of them could move in.

Gu An'an was very satisfied with this and gave him two handfuls of candy before leaving.

"No, no, you've already given us enough."

Wang Erniu was only doing his job for money, so how could he possibly accept these things?

"I heard that your family has many children, so give them a treat."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Yue immediately went back into the house and grabbed a small bag of rock sugar. This was specially prepared by her mother for her to use to grease palms; the amount was small but presentable.

Wang Erniu wanted to refuse, but both of them were men of their word, so in the end they put it in their pockets and went home, much to the delight of his wife and children.

"Did those two educated youths give it to you?"

Wang Erniu nodded with a simple smile, "Wife, I thought we shouldn't take so much stuff for nothing. Should we send over two more loads of firewood tomorrow?"

He actually wanted to send more, but their house was small and there was no room to put any more. However, there was plenty of time for this, so there was no rush.

"Okay, whatever you say."

Life was peaceful in Xiaowang Village, while Xiao Yuheng led his men back to the army.

The man was a key figure in several matters, but he was very tight-lipped; it took two days of interrogation to pry him open.

After not getting much rest for several days, Xiao Yuheng went back to his dorm, took a quick shower, and went straight to sleep.

He didn't get to the training ground until the reveille sounded the next day.

After training ended, Chen Yong had just entered the canteen when he saw his deputy regimental commander standing in line with a plate. Remembering his guess, he immediately went over and casually asked, "Deputy Regimental Commander, do you think An'an has arrived yet?"

Upon hearing Gu An'an's name, Xiao Yuheng finally realized what he had forgotten. He handed the plate to Chen Yong, said "Get me some food," and quickly left.

Chen Yong: ...What? Did I misunderstand? Did the iron tree not bloom? No, that's not right! The deputy regimental commander clearly treats An'an differently.

Unable to understand what had happened, Chen Yong could only sum it all up in one sentence.

Don't try to guess what a man is thinking! Especially a straight man like Deputy Regiment Commander Xiao.
