Chapter 7 The eyes of the masses are discerning.

At this moment, Gu An'an was like a stubborn and unyielding little poplar tree in Xiao Yuheng's eyes. For a moment, he wanted to go up and pat her head, but it was inappropriate.

"Who's the fastest? Go report to the police right away!"

"You're saying they were together a long time ago, so isn't there something fishy about the deaths of Factory Director Gu and his daughter?"

"Sister-in-law Qian, don't scare people. If it were really as you say, would they still be human?"

"I think this might actually be true. Besides, the eldest brother of the Zhang family is also dead, and their family is all fine. Doesn't that prove something?"

Gu An'an looked at the group of elderly women with admiration. Sure enough, there are always smart people in any era.

"No wonder..."

Gu An'an staggered a couple of times, tears streaming down her face. Luckily, the old lady next to her reacted quickly, otherwise Gu An'an might have knocked her down as well.

"An'an, don't be sad. Everyone is here. We'll stand up for you."

"Yes! We'll stand up for you."

Gu An'an sobbed twice before recalling and saying, "On the day my mother was buried, I saw the two of them come out of the room. When they saw me, they were a little scared and asked me if I had heard something."

Upon hearing that there was more gossip, everyone felt refreshed and invigorated. "So, what did you hear?"

Gu An'an looked at Zhang Changsheng and then at Wang Meihua, pretending to recall something. "I heard her ask my dad if anyone had found out, and she also said something like 'It's good that she died,' and 'When are you going to get married?' They were deliberately keeping their voices down. If the door hadn't been left open, I definitely wouldn't have heard it."

Now everyone's gaze towards the two of them became even more meaningful.

Zhang Changsheng felt a chill run down his spine. More than ten years had passed, and he could not remember the events of that year very clearly, but these words sounded very familiar to him because Wang Meihua often said them in his ear. He did not know whether he had said them that day, or whether Gu An'an, who was only six years old at the time, had heard them. The only thing he was sure of was that he could not admit it.

“Gu An’an, is this how I taught you? You’ve been lying since you were a young age. How could you possibly remember these things when you were only a few years old? Believe me or not, I’ll beat you to death, you unfilial brat.”

Zhang Changsheng wasn't just talking; he really intended to make a move. However, Gu An'an was surrounded by a group of older women, who wouldn't give him a chance to get close.

Gu An'an stood straight, her voice full of stubbornness, "Because that day I became a child without a mother, so I must remember her firmly and never forget her."

Looking at that slender figure, Xiao Yuheng felt a tightness in his chest. His fingers, hanging by his sides, rubbed together slightly, and a barely perceptible hint of heartache flashed in his lowered eyes.

Just then, the police arrived. "What happened?"

The crowd shielded Gu An'an in the middle and quickly explained the situation.

The police officer frowned upon hearing this, "What do you have to say?"

"No, we didn't, we're completely innocent! Officer."

"Whether they did those things or not can only be found out through investigation."

Gu An'an reminded them at the right moment, "Comrades, I think that since they have been able to secretly be together for so many years, they must have left some evidence."

"Yes! They just called me Dad. I don't believe they accidentally called me by the wrong name. They're not three-year-olds."

The police officers, of course, had to listen to the voice of the people. "Please cooperate with our investigation."

The Zhang family members tried to stop them, but these police officers were not to be trifled with.

Twenty minutes later, the younger police officer threw the items he had found on the ground. "You said it was nothing? Then why are there men's things in your room? Do you think we're all idiots?"

Wang Meihua trembled, "That, that belongs to my deadbeat husband."

The lies were so absurd that Gu An'an didn't even need to appear. "Your man has been dead for over ten years, yet these clothes are brand new. They're obviously made of fabric from the last two years. Even when you're making up lies, you need to make them believable."

"And this one too. I saw Zhang Changsheng wearing it a few days ago. Acting like a hooligan right here at your doorstep. When it comes to shamelessness, you guys are the best."

"There are even men's underwear here."

Someone with sharp eyes spotted a suspicious item, poked at it with a broom by the wall, and exclaimed, "Look! Look! Widows and widowers still using birth control products? And they still dare to say they're innocent?"

"There are still used and unwashed things here, ugh! Upstairs and downstairs, the sister-in-law and brother-in-law are sleeping together, shameless filthy things!"

No matter how the two tried to deny it, they were taken away by the police.

Gu An'an thanked everyone, which earned her another wave of sympathy.

"Thank you, Brother Chen Yong, and thank you, Deputy Regiment Commander Xiao."

Chen Yong knew the original owner of this body, but the two were a few years apart and hadn't spent much time together. Feeling that he hadn't been of any help, he felt a little embarrassed to accept Gu An'an's thanks.

"No need, no need. You should take good care of yourself from now on. If you need any help, you can ask my parents, or of course, you can ask me."

Gu An'an saw the sincerity in the other person's eyes, nodded, and said nothing more before going home and closing the door.

"Sigh, he's a pitiful person too."

Xiao Yuheng, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up, "Since you feel sorry for the girl, why don't you lend a hand?"

Chen Yong was stunned. "How can I help?"

Xiao Yuheng took the lead and stepped upstairs. "Didn't someone just say that the deaths of her mother, grandfather, and uncle were all a bit suspicious? Since there are doubts, of course we have to investigate them thoroughly. We can't wrong an innocent person, nor can we let a bad person go free. Protecting the people is the duty of us soldiers."

Chen Yong never expected that the usually aloof Deputy Regiment Commander Xiao would say such a thing. In the past, he would never have bothered with such trivial matters. Was he out of his mind today?

However, this suggestion is still good; the people in their residential compound shouldn't be bullied for no reason.

"Deputy Regiment Commander Xiao, wait for me. I'll go and report the situation to those comrades, and I'll be right back."
