Chapter 187: Confidence in Wu An

The village dock was dimly lit at night.

Apart from a few stores with their lights on, only two or three streetlights were lit.

Wu Yingwei walked to the dock, smoking a cigarette as he looked at the increasingly dark sea.

The distant lighthouse became the only light in the darkness, guiding the fishermen still adrift at sea on their way home.

Old Meng walked over and greeted Wu Yingwei with a smile: "Yingwei, what are you looking at?"

Wu Yingwei replied, "I didn't see anything. I've eaten and came over to digest. You go about your business."

"I'm not busy, I just came to digest my food." Old Meng didn't leave. Seeing that Wu Yingwei had just finished a cigarette, he handed him one: "I heard that A'an went out to sea early this morning?"

Wu Yingwei took the cigarette and nodded.

"Don't worry, Ah An has made a lot of money during this time. What does that mean?"

"That means he's the kind of person who makes a living from this job."

"With the protection of Mazu, we will surely have a safe future and return with a full harvest."

Wu Yingwei nodded.

In front of outsiders, he would still pretend to be a strict father, saying that he wasn't worried at all, but in front of his old friends, he had nothing to hide.

He came to the dock because he was worried about Wu An, since it was already so late.

Just then.

A voice rang out from the side: "Yingwei, Lao Meng, what are you doing here at this hour?"

The two turned around and saw Chen Gui.

Wu Yingwei frowned. For some reason, seeing Chen Gui made him feel uneasy.

Especially the way Chen Gui smiled; it was clear he was plotting something bad.

We've worked together for so many years.

The two disliked each other, but it was undeniable that they understood each other's character very well.

Old Meng asked, "So what brought you here?"

Chen Gui shrugged: "Just routine patrols."

Although they grew up together and have lived in the village for decades, their relationship is not good. Even when they stand together, they don't have much to say to each other.

The atmosphere was awkward.

Wu Ping and Mei Yueqin arrived on a motorcycle tricycle. When they saw Wu Yingwei from a distance, they called out, "Dad, An called and said he'll be here soon."

Wu Yingwei breathed a sigh of relief, and a slight smile appeared on her face: "You could have just called me to let me know, why did you come all the way here?"

Wu Ping said, "Aqing sent us."

"Going out so early and coming back so late, they must have made quite a haul."

As he spoke, he couldn't hide the joy on his face.

He originally wanted to go too, but something came up at the school and he couldn't go.

But that's okay.

There will be plenty of opportunities in the future to make money with Ah An.

Besides, even if Ah An makes money, he can't treat his older brother unfairly.

Wu Yingwei nodded, then glanced over and inadvertently saw that Chen Gui also had a smile on his face.

Unlike the fake smile just now, the smile on his face was obviously much more genuine.

That's really strange.

How could he be happy?

Not long after.

A fishing boat rapidly approached the dock in the darkness, and its shape gradually became clearer.

Mei Yueqin excitedly grabbed Wu Ping's arm and exclaimed, "It's A'an's fishing boat!"

"I'm finally back."

Wu Ping was completely shaken by her.

As soon as the fishing boat docked and the planks were put on, Aqing was the first to run down, carrying two buckets in her hands.

Following closely behind was Wu An.

Mai Hangyu followed closely behind.

Chen Gui tiptoed to look at the fishing boat, but unfortunately, there were no lights on the boat, and it was too dark to see anything.

Wu An turned around and waved to the fishing boat.

With the engine running, the fishing boat immediately sailed away from the dock.

Wu Yingwei was taken aback and pointed at the departing fishing boat: "A'an, why did that fishing boat leave?"

Wu An said, "Go to the dock in town; there are people there to pick up the goods."

While he was still on the ship and had a signal, he first contacted his family, and then called Gao Qiangqi.

Gao Qiangqi wasn't in town; he was returning from the county.

I reckon that when he gets to town, he'll be able to meet Gao Qiangqi at the dock.

There will probably be a meal and drinks tonight.

Wu An asked A Qing to put a bucket in Lao Mai's SUV and said, "Tell Aunt Juan when we get back that we'll settle today's bill tomorrow."

Aqing nodded, greeted everyone, and then left carrying a bucket.

Mai Hangyu also greeted them and went back to the car to wait.

Wu An put the bucket in the motorcycle tricycle. Wu Ping looked into the bucket curiously, and Chen Gui also came over and shone a flashlight inside.

There was nothing else in the bucket except a sea bream, some abalone, a few small lobsters, scallops, and other seafood, which I grabbed while picking up the abalone.

They didn't catch many in total, and Wu An figured that since they wouldn't make much money from selling them anyway, he decided not to sell them.

The group divided it up and gave it to their families as a treat.

Despite the long distance we went today, we didn't actually catch much seafood. If we hadn't been lucky enough to find abalone, we probably wouldn't have been able to recoup the cost of the fishing boat at most, and would have only made a few thousand dollars.

Um?

Wu An suddenly realized that he seemed to be getting a little carried away.

Not even satisfied with earning a few thousand dollars?

All right.

For him, earning a few thousand dollars seems like a piece of cake.

Wu An stared at Chen Gui, wondering what the old man was up to. Just then, Chen Gui looked up and their eyes met. Chen Gui instinctively looked away.

That old man is up to no good.

But he couldn't figure out where Chen Gui could cause trouble, so he simply stopped thinking about it.

There's no such thing as being able to guard against thieves for a thousand days if you're a thief for a thousand days.

Let's deal with whatever comes our way.

After Chen Gui left, Wu An greeted his brother and sister-in-law, saying happily, "Brother and sister-in-law, I made quite a bit of money today. I still have to go to town later, and I don't know how late I'll be working, so you don't have to wait for me."

"You're leaving already?" Mei Yueqin said, "The food at home is all ready, waiting for you to come back and eat together."

Upon hearing this, Lao Meng couldn't help but laugh. Wu Yingwei coughed twice; he had just made up an excuse to come out and digest his food.

Wu An smiled and said, "I definitely won't be able to have dinner. I'll go home for breakfast tomorrow morning."

"When you eat out, eat more rice and drink less alcohol. You've lost a lot of weight lately," Mei Yueqin advised, secretly planning to prepare more variety for tomorrow morning.

Wu An nodded, greeted his father, and got into the car.

As Wu Ping watched the SUV drive away, he said, "Seeing how happy Ah An is, it looks like this trip to sea was quite fruitful."

Mei Yueqin said with a smile, "The fishing season is about to open, so maybe we'll be able to earn back our investment soon."

Wu Yingwei nodded: "I reckon there shouldn't be any major problems."

Wu An hadn't spent much money on the fishing boat, and the opening of the fishing season was a time when people could make money. As long as one was diligent, one could definitely earn money.

They chatted more and more happily, and they still had a lot of confidence in Wu An.

Wu Ping looked at Lao Meng and said, "Uncle Meng, get in the car, let's go home together."

Old Meng shook his head: "No."

“I’m not like some people who haven’t even eaten yet, but say they’re full and are just here to digest.”

"You guys go ahead, I'll walk home."

Wu Ping wanted to say a few more words of advice, but Wu Yingwei urged him to hurry up and ride his bike. Old Meng had been joking like that, and if he went home with him, he would definitely be laughed at all along the way.

Doesn't he have any pride?

Wu Yingwei is a man who cares about his reputation!
