Liu Aihua retired last year and was watering the flowers outside when she heard the phone ringing in the living room.
She picked up the phone, listened to the report from the gatekeeper, sighed in her heart, and let them in.
This was Cao Xuewen's first time in the compound. Looking at the soldiers standing at the gate and the small garden buildings inside, he realized how big the gap was between him and this place.
He glanced at the other three people and saw that they looked normal, so they must have come here often.
Cao Xuewen felt a little relieved. Since they often visited each other, the relationship between the two families should be good, so there might still be hope for his job.
When Liu Aihua saw her niece and her husband coming over, she guessed why they came today.
He asked them to sit inside and went to the kitchen to pour a pot of water.
Guo Hongying quickly followed, took the teapot from her hand, and said affectionately: "Sister, don't bother, you are not a stranger. Wensheng and I just brought our two children to see you today."
"I'm fine, there's nothing to see. You guys are so busy, you don't have to come here all the time, just call me if you have anything."
Liu Aihua didn't want to exchange pleasantries with this scheming brother's wife, so she smiled and took Guo Hongying to the living room.
She asked her brother directly, "Vincent, why aren't you at work at this time? Is there something going on here?"
Liu Wensheng was relieved to see that his eldest sister was the only one at home. If his brother-in-law and nephews were present, he would not have been able to speak.
Liu Wensheng didn't say hello and just told his sister the purpose of his visit.
"Sister, Xuewen and Linlin have only been married for two years and don't even have a child. It's not a big deal for them to work in the south and north respectively. Can you help me think of a way to keep both children in Beijing?"
Liu Aihua's face darkened and he looked at him seriously: "Wensheng, I told you last time to obey the assignment. Since the higher-ups have arranged this, it must be necessary for the position. We can't be so selfish and make things difficult for the country just for our own convenience."
"Besides, I'm already retired. Even if I were still in office, I wouldn't bend the law for my family. I've been in the revolution since I was sixteen, and I've never done anything to let the country down. I'm even less likely to do that now."
After Liu Aihua finished speaking, he looked at Cao Xuewen and Liu Linlin and said, "There are only so many positions in Beijing. If you two are left here, others will definitely be transferred away. That would be too unfair."
"If you two want to be together, there are ways. Linlin can follow Xuewen to the countryside. You can contribute to your hometown together there, and it will be worthwhile for the country to train you."
Liu Aihua's words seemed to pour a bucket of cold water on Liu Linlin and Cao Xuewen, extinguishing all their hopes.
Liu Linlin looked at Liu Aihua with red eyes and said aggrievedly: "Aunt, I don't want to leave Jingshi. I can't bear to leave you. Please help us and leave Xuewen here."
She hugged Liu Aihua's arm, shaking it and acting coquettishly, "Aunt, niece begs you, please?"
Guo Hongying also pleaded for her daughter, "Sister, please help the two children. Linlin has been spoiled since she was a child, and Wensheng and I can't bear to let her go so far."
As Guo Hongying spoke, she winked at Liu Wensheng, asking him to come over and plead together.
Liu Aihua frowned when she saw the behavior of her sister-in-law and niece. She was about to scold them when the door was pushed open.
As soon as Jiang Peiyuan entered the living room, he saw his brother-in-law and his family.
He looked at everyone calmly, then walked in with a smile.
"How come Wensheng and Hongying have time to come here? And Linlin, isn't she in school?"
Liu Wensheng became nervous when he saw his brother-in-law come in, and he didn't know what to do with his hands. When he heard his brother-in-law's question, he quickly stood up and answered.
"Brother-in-law, I haven't come to see you and my elder sister for a long time. Today I happened to be free, so I brought the children over to visit."
When Jiang Peiyuan came in, Cao Xuewen felt a sense of oppression.
Knowing that this old man was Liu Linlin's uncle, the chief, he didn't dare to make any movements and stood up to greet him respectfully.
"Hello, uncle. I am Cao Xuewen, Linlin's lover."
"Oh, hello, hello. You are a nice young man, very handsome. Sit down, sit down, you are welcome here."
Jiang Peiyuan was very polite and enthusiastic, but Cao Xuewen always felt a little distant.
As soon as he came back, the Liu family members dared not mention the work issues of Liu Linlin and Cao Xuewen anymore.
Everyone sat on the sofa, chatting casually.
Although Cao Xuewen was a little anxious, he didn't dare to act presumptuously and could only patiently listen to their nonsense.
After a while, Chenchen and An'an came back from school, followed by Jiang Shaoting and Gu Fanghua.
Gu Fanghua looked at the people sitting in the living room and the gifts on the coffee table. Her eyes flashed and she smiled and greeted them. She said she still had work to do and went to the study with the file bag.
Jiang Shaoting chatted with them for a few words, then saw Chenchen and Anan coming down from upstairs, and then took the brother and sister out to play ball.
Liu Wensheng and Guo Hongying were somewhat unhappy with the attitude of their nephew and his wife, but they did not dare to show it.
The two were on pins and needles, but their daughter and son-in-law's jobs had not been finalized yet, and they felt reluctant to leave now.
Jiang Peiyuan put down the newspaper and said politely, "Vensheng, if you have nothing to do tonight, let's eat here. I'll ask your elder sister to go to the cafeteria to order some dishes, and we'll have a drink tonight."
Jiang Peiyuan said that he was keeping the meal for him, but anyone with a discerning eye could tell that he was sending the guests away.
Liu Wensheng knew that he couldn't do it today, so he stood up and said with a smile: "Brother-in-law, a batch of goods will arrive at the factory tonight. I have to go and keep an eye on it. I won't eat here. I'll come to see you and my sister when I'm free."
