"Oh dear, why are you crying?"
Niu Mang was getting anxious. She had never seen a woman cry before and didn't know how to comfort her.
He had never seen his wife cry.
His wife was a year younger than him and was from a neighboring village. His family lived on the east side of the river, and her family lived on the west side.
He was a big, burly man, very hardworking; he had only met him a few times.
Her parents liked her very much back then, saying that farm girls are good at farm work, and that they are strong and fertile.
He served in the army for several years, and when he returned home, he learned that his parents had already arranged a marriage for him.
The girl who was waiting for him to come back had already become an old maid.
Two days after returning home, they got married in a daze.
Before leaving, she baked many pancakes for herself and made several pieces of underwear.
He rode away on a tall horse, and even from a distance, he could still see her standing at the village entrance, waving and smiling at him.
He had never seen her cry.
"Alright, alright. Don't cry, I'll take you to buy some meat buns right now."
He grabbed Xiaoduo's sleeve and walked out. "I often go to that shop to buy steamed buns. Their buns have thin skins and lots of meat, and they're especially delicious."
Suddenly, he stopped and looked at the sleeve he was holding.
His expression changed, and he suddenly released her.
Having gotten used to spending his days with rough men, he had forgotten the difference between men and women.
"Did I pinch you too hard?"
Xiao Duo lowered her head, her long eyelashes trembled, and she whispered, "No."
Niu Mang: "Oh, that's good."
“It’s getting dark. Follow me, and I’ll take you there and back quickly. If it gets any later, their place will be closing up shop.”
With that, he took a long stride and strode out.
He would look back every now and then.
The little girl followed closely behind.
We're almost there.
He pointed to the sign ahead, "Let me tell you, don't let its small size fool you, the food is delicious. Look up at this sign, keep your eyes peeled..."
But after he finished speaking, no one responded.
