Officer Zhou gritted his teeth and said, "Lord Bai, don't go too far."
Bai Bai smiled slightly, "What are you saying, Officer Zhou? I'm just doing my job."
"Hmph, Lord Bai, don't forget that my mother is related to Magistrate Zhang of Zhou County by marriage. This Su Ruanruan committed violence in public and stabbed the family member of an official of the court. She will face imprisonment."
Bai Bai pressed his lips together tightly; he had actually forgotten about that. "But there was a reason for it. If your mother hadn't struck first..."
Bai Bai argued vehemently, and Su Ruanruan really wanted to interrupt him; her performance today was practically a trip to jail.
Su Ruanruan stood next to Huo Yan and, using the cover, pinched Huo Yan's waist hard.
Speaking in a voice only the two of them could hear, he said, "Listen to how eloquent Lord Bai is; I'm sure I can escape this imprisonment."
She looked up again and quickly gave Huo Yan a dismissive glance, "You're not good enough."
Huo Yan, “!”
Men are most afraid of being told they can't do it!
Huo Yan noticed Su Ruanruan's flippant and smug expression, and suddenly he didn't want her to have an easy time.
Huo Yan curled his lips, "My lord, it is a fact that Su Ruanruan injured someone, and she will have to endure the imprisonment. As for the time, that depends on the condition of the injured person."
Bai Bai was stunned. What kind of move was this? How could Huo Yan side with outsiders?
Huo Yan ignored Bai Bai and headed towards the prison with Su Ruanruan in his arms.
Bai Bai felt extremely embarrassed, as he had been humiliated by his own subordinate in front of outsiders.
Officer Zhou scoffed, "Lord Bai's official arrogance is nothing more than this."
Bai Bai glared at him, beckoned, and said sternly, "What are you all standing there for? Why don't you invite Madam Zhou in?"
The two constables behind her received the order and gestured for Han to enter.
Madam Han turned back every three steps, crying out, "My son, hurry and save your mother!"
Officer Zhou said, "Mother, don't worry."
Meanwhile, Gu Ji distributed candy to beggars on the street, and soon news spread that Su Ruanruan had been arrested for stabbing a family member of an official.
As the story spread, it became known that Su Ruanruan was imprisoned because Zhou the Butcher's mother discovered evidence of her murder, and Su Ruanruan wanted to kill her to silence her.
He quickly boarded the oxcart to the town, and once there, he repeated the same process, and the news spread like wildfire. Finally, he headed towards Daohua Village.
Meanwhile, Ziwu also rented a carriage and set off for Maoshan Village with several of her companions.
Inside the prison, Huo Yan walked ahead, with Su Ruanruan following behind.
"You really want to go to jail?"
"What?" Su Ruanruan blinked, looking at Huo Yan's back.
Huo Yan stopped, turned around, and took a few steps closer to Su Ruanruan, leaning down to look down at her. "I said, you really want to come in?"
Huo Yan approached step by step until he trapped Su Ruanruan against the wall.
"Why did you deliberately provoke the Han family? Hmm?"
"You're talking nonsense. I didn't do that. You saw it yourself. She provoked me first."
Huo Yan braced himself against the wall, holding Su Ruanruan tightly, his sharp eyes fixed on her.
"Su Ruanruan, I really find you very interesting. Knowing that I suspect you are involved in the death of Butcher Zhou, why don't you stay away and instead rush to the yamen to court death?"
Huo Yan narrowed his eyes slightly, "You think I only showed up when I was saving you? Actually... I was already watching you when you were hiding. Why did you have to show up just when she appeared..."
Su Ruanruan, "..."
That scoundrel, he's a real wolfhound, he's everywhere.
Does she have some kind of scent? Otherwise, how could he always smell her so accurately and follow her around?
Su Ruanruan pursed her lips and chose to remain silent.
"Hey, what are you two doing?"
Bai Yun's voice came from the cell not far away, "What are you looking at? I'm talking to you, Su Ruanruan!"
Su Ruanruan looked in the direction of the sound and saw Bai Yun clinging to the wooden bars of the cell, looking this way with longing eyes, her face almost as if she wanted to squeeze out from behind the bars.
"Be careful not to get your forehead stuck," Su Ruanruan teased.
She pushed Huo Yan with her palm, "Stay away from me."
Huo Yan was so close to her; his hot breath hit her face.
The atmosphere was rather ambiguous.
If the other person were Mu Bai, she wouldn't care at all; she'd rather be closer, much closer...
But she wasn't interested in anyone else.
Huo Yan remained unmoved, pinching Su Ruanruan's chin with two fingers, forcing her to raise her head.
"A strong nation and a strong military—who taught you to say that?"
Su Ruanruan was stunned. "You...you saw it again?"
Huo Yan raised an eyebrow.
Waqu, is that thing her tail? I can't shake it off no matter what I do.
Did he hear what she said to others that day?
She...didn't say anything outrageous or blasphemous?
I need to be more careful with my words in the future, lest I lose my head here.
Su Ruanruan fell silent again, only blinking her eyes innocently as she looked at Huo Yan.
"Is your mouth sealed shut by a clam?"
Huo Yan pressed his tongue against his back teeth, helpless against Su Ruanruan's silence.
You can't hit them, and you can't scold them.
But those bright almond-shaped eyes, like a clear spring, were looking at him with utter bewilderment.
Huo Yan raised his hand, about to touch those beautiful eyes, but was interrupted by Bai Yun's shout once again.
Huo Yan was startled, and his thoughts returned to the present. "Let's go."
He locked Su Ruanruan in Baiyun's cell, glanced at the two of them, and then left.
Bai Yun immediately fell silent when she saw him coming, and only approached Su Ruanruan after he had gone far away.
