"Brother Mu Bai, why are you back?" Su Ruanruan's throat tightened slightly.
"Today is your birthday, so of course I have to come back." Mu Bai exuded a chill.
Su Ruanruan quickly pulled him inside, closed the door, and held his cold hand as they walked into the house.
Bai Ruan excitedly followed behind the two, wagging its tail.
Su Ruanruan told him to sit down, and then went to pour him some water.
Mu Bai put down his bundle and dusted himself off.
Su Ruanruan also came over with hot water, "Brother Mubai, have some water to warm yourself up."
"Okay." Mu Bai sat down, and after a few sips of warm water, he felt much warmer.
He touched Su Ruanruan's cheek and asked gently, "How have you been lately, Ruanruan?"
Su Ruanruan took the opportunity to sit on Mu Bai's lap, "I'm fine."
"Brother Mu Bai, why are you back? I heard the autumn imperial examinations are on July 12th, how come you're back in time?"
Su Ruanruan leaned on his shoulder, "I know that Brother Mubai missed it once three years ago, so please don't make any mistakes this time."
"Pah, pah, pah... That's not what I meant."
"No, I've already calculated the distance. If we leave tomorrow morning, we can arrive by noon."
Su Ruanruan straightened up, gazing into his clear, flowing eyes, "So, Brother Mubai came back and specially celebrated my birthday?"
"Brother Mu Bai, why are you so good to me?"
Mu Bai's eyes were filled with tenderness as he pulled Su Ruanruan into his arms. "Ruanruan is good to me too. I saw the silver you put in your bag. Did you give me all the money you had on you? You're such a silly girl."
Su Ruanruan smiled sweetly in Mu Bai's arms, "Brother Mu Bai is silly too, I saw the silver you put under my pillow."
She clung tightly to Mu Bai's neck; in this life, she still hadn't received the love of her father and mother. The memories in her mind were all from the original owner of the body, and she couldn't resonate with those scenes of familial affection.
Xiao Xi and her aunt's family treated her well because they considered her the original owner of the body. Qin Bei and Gu Ji felt the same way about her.
Only the person before her is someone she is mutually devoted to, someone who loves her as she is now, and someone who belongs only to her.
It was like a ray of sunshine shining into her dark and closed heart.
"Brother Mu Bai, can we be together for life?" Su Ruanruan felt uneasy, always feeling that such a beautiful longing was like a bubble that would be burst one day.
"Silly girl, I don't want to be with you for one lifetime, I only wish to be with you for all eternity."
Su Ruanruan's eyes reddened. "If I get old, with wrinkles all over my face and gray hair, will you still dislike me?"
A smile appeared on Mu Bai's gentle face. "I'm older than you, so won't I be even older by then?"
"Perhaps, before I see your temples turn gray, I will have already left you."
Su Ruanruan nestled in his arms, listening to these sad words in silence for a long time.
If he were no longer in this world, there would be no color left in her eyes, and her life would have no meaning.
In the quiet atmosphere, an untimely rumble came from my stomach.
Su Ruanruan then realized that Mu Bai must have been in such a hurry that he hadn't eaten.
Mu Bai was a little embarrassed. "Today is your birthday, so I rushed back to make you long noodles. Wait for me."
Thinking of the bowl of plain noodles she had eaten earlier, and then looking at Mu Bai's tender and unrestrained smile.
Unable to bring herself to refuse, Su Ruanruan raised her lips and said, "Brother Mubai, I'll do it with you."
Inside the steaming kitchen, the two busied themselves. Mu Bai placed the cut noodles into the boiling water.
Su Ruanruan pulled the bellows, occasionally teasing Bai Ruan, who was playing by the fire nearby.
This feeling is peaceful and beautiful, it's just a pity that Mu Bai is leaving tomorrow morning.
Soon, two bowls of fragrant noodles were ready.
There was a poached egg in the bowl in front of her, while Mu Bai's bowl contained only noodles and scallions.
Su Ruanruan placed the poached egg from her bowl into Mu Bai's eyes, "It's too late, I can't eat this much."
Mu Bai looked up at Su Ruanruan, blinked his bright eyes, but did not refuse.
"Ruan Ruan, you are the best person to me in this world."
Ruan Ruan couldn't possibly eat that much; she just saw that there was nothing in his bowl.
Just like before, when he bought Ruan Ruan meat porridge and meat buns, she would always find various excuses to let him try them.
Apart from his mother, he could not find anyone better to him than Ruan Ruan.
Su Ruanruan smiled faintly, her hand holding the noodles paused.
She had already seen the other fried egg hidden under the noodles in her bowl.
Su Ruanruan choked up a little. Mu Bai really knew her too well. He must have known that even if they each only had one fried egg, she would find an excuse to share hers with him.
She stroked Mu Bai's hand with its distinct knuckles, "You too, Brother Mu Bai, I will never regret falling in love with you in this life."
After dinner, the two of them cleaned the kitchen thoroughly. Su Ruanruan then boiled hot water for Mu Bai to take a bath.
...
In Su Ruanruan's small house, Mu Bai opened his bundle, took out a calligraphy brush, fiddled with it for a bit, and pulled out a silver note from the brush handle.
"This is?"
"I won first place at the poetry competition."
Su Ruanruan was happier than if she had won the lottery, holding a hundred-tael silver note in her hand.
"Brother Mu Bai, you are amazing."
"Keep this banknote safe; consider it my advance betrothal gift to you."
Su Ruanruan bit her lip and glared at him, "Who wants to marry you?"
Mu Bai held her hand. "Before I went to Lingzhou, you said you would marry me. I took it seriously, and now you have no choice but to accept it."
"After the autumn imperial examination, I will go to the Su family to propose marriage."
