Chapter 196 The Substitute

Su Ruanruan and Ziwu found a dilapidated temple and decided to make do for the night. Although the doors and windows were broken, the temple was still much better than the outside.

They gathered some branches and lit a bonfire, which quickly illuminated the room.

"Master, please rest first. I will go and stand guard at the door."

Su Ruanruan glanced outside and said, "No need, you can rest by the campfire too."

Zi Wu found a long stick nearby and stared at the outside as if facing a formidable enemy. "This is unacceptable. This place is extremely dangerous. This servant should go and guard the door."

Su Ruanruan glanced at Bai Ruan, who was sleeping soundly by the fire, and knew that it would be of no use to rely on it to guard the fire.

“I said there’s no need, and there’s no need. Nothing will happen tonight.” Su Ruanruan turned her gaze to the window again, lost in thought.

Purple Mist wondered why her master was so certain that no evil people would appear at night.

But she still stood guard by the campfire near the door, holding the long stick in her hand, leaning against the pillar and watching the outside warily.

Su Ruanruan didn't say anything, but simply began to sing a ballad softly.

Her hand moved to her stomach again, and she couldn't quite describe the feeling in her heart.

The bonfire was burning brightly, and Ziwu had unknowingly drifted off to sleep.

Su Ruanruan tiptoed outside. The night was filled with twinkling stars, and the surroundings were cold and silent.

“I know you’re here, come out,” Su Ruanruan said softly.

A hush fell over the air. Just when she thought it was just her imagination, a figure slowly emerged from the darkness—it was Huo Yan.

He strode forward and embraced Su Ruanruan tightly, his chin gently touching the top of her head. He remained silent, as if trying to melt her into his own body.

No one knows how anxious he felt when he learned of Su Ruanruan's disappearance; the feeling was even stronger than when he first learned that she had been kidnapped by Chu Ran.

Su Ruanruan braced herself against his chest, "Huo Yan, let me go!"

"Ruanruan, let me hug you, okay? I'm so tired."

In that moment, there was no one else, no worries or trivial matters, only the two of them.

He longed to confide in her; his longing for her was overwhelming.

Su Ruanruan couldn't push him away, and said in a muffled voice, "Huo Yan, give me the concubine's book."

Huo Yan gripped Su Ruanruan's arm tightly, his gaze piercing as he stared at her, his face full of anger. "Su Ruanruan, it's that again! Don't you have anything else to say to me?"

“Xinrou and I are not what you think. I have really let her go a long time ago. Now I only see her as a younger sister.”

“I can’t just stand by and do nothing when something happens to her family. Leaving you in the Northwest to Niu Mang’s care was the worst mistake I’ve ever made. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Give me a chance, okay?”

"No matter what others say about you, I will never give up on you. Let me marry you, okay? I don't want you to wander outside. Come home with me!"

Su Ruanruan suddenly burst out laughing, as if she had heard the biggest joke in the world, and questioned, "Huo Yan, do you really like me?"

"What do you mean? You don't believe me?" Huo Yan stared into Su Ruanruan's eyes.

Su Ruanruan looked at him quietly as well, "You have always loved Miss Fu. I didn't understand before why you would sometimes stare into my eyes, why you liked to kiss my eyes, and I could even feel that you were looking at something else through my eyes."

“I met Miss Fu at Fahua Temple. The moment I saw her, I finally knew what it was, because we have similar eyebrows and eyes.”

"You think of her, through my eyes, in my heart."

“You used to tailor several blue dresses for me, saying that blue suits me and that you like me wearing blue.”

"Actually, no. It's Fu Xinrou who likes wearing blue dresses. You like them because she does."

"Do you know what a stand-in is? I am one. I am just her shadow."

"No, that's not it at all!" Huo Yan explained hurriedly, "Perhaps... perhaps I thought of her when I first met you, but later I really let go of it."

"I know she is her, and you are you. I like you in blue simply because you look beautiful in it, and it has nothing to do with anyone else!"

Su Ruanruan sighed deeply, "Huo Yan, stop deceiving yourself. A person's instinctive reaction is the most real. When you received the news that Fu Xinrou had fallen unconscious after hitting a pillar before her wedding, you must have been extremely terrified!"

"When you learned that she had not betrayed you, and that everything was forced upon you by her father, weren't you heartbroken and filled with remorse?"

"The bulletin should have mentioned that she was only unconscious and not in any danger. However, you couldn't wait to set off from the mine, without even going home to change your clothes or preparing any food for the journey."

"Isn't this a sign of being eager to go home?"

"You're just making excuses, Su Ruanruan. I'll say it again, I didn't!"

Su Ruanruan smiled with relief, "No matter what the truth is, it has nothing to do with me anymore, Huo Yan. She is a good girl, you must not let her down."

“I deeply understand the pain of lovers who cannot be together. You two were childhood sweethearts, and your love was stronger than gold. Now that the clouds have cleared and the truth has come out, she has not changed her heart. She even proved her loyalty by dying before the wedding. What a brave and fearless girl she is.”

"She is now all alone and helpless. If you betray her, she will have no will to live."

"Since you have already pleaded with His Majesty to save her, you should cherish her even more."

Su Ruanruan paused briefly and said softly, "Huo Yan, I'm really sorry, I had no intention of interfering in your relationship."
