Chapter 2 Injustice: Wrongfully Accused

Upon meeting his cold, indifferent gaze, Su Ruanruan quickly lowered her head.

He actually knew I sold tofu, my goodness!

"Give her the things."

Su Ruanruan blinked. What is that?

Just as she was thinking this, the man named Jin Yu picked her up like a chick and threw her onto the riverbank.

Su Ruanruan almost cried; not a single one of them was gentle.

Her body is now so delicate and petite that a gust of wind could blow her away. Being thrown to the ground like this, her body must be falling apart.

Waaaaah, my heart is breaking. (?????)

The next instant, a beautifully crafted dagger gleaming with silver light was thrust out from the side, startling Su Ruanruan so much that she fell to the ground.

This made the man burst into laughter, "Look at you, so pathetic. I thought you were quite calm just now, but it turns out you only have this much courage."

Here, wash it clean. Remember to wash it thoroughly!

Su Ruanruan took the dagger and said "Oh".

Mustering his courage, he asked, "Officer, when...when can we go home?"

Jin Yu looked up at the sun.

"The sun is scorching hot right now, so it's not suitable to go any further. We'll take you back to the yamen after the sun sets. We'll ask you some questions before we can let you go back."

After saying this, the man strode away.

Su Ruanruan looked at the dagger in her hand and sighed.

It's no wonder she's timid; having grown up under the red flag, she's never seen such a complex society.

Every day, I'm either getting beaten up, on my way to a fight, or being beaten up by someone else.

I've been here for over two months now, going into town every day to get tofu from the tofu shops and sell it. I've seen too many injustices, and I've also seen government officials, thugs, and hooligans demanding protection money.

She had resisted at first, but all she got in return was beatings. She was not only beaten several times, but was also taken advantage of.

There was also an elderly couple who sold vegetables. Because they couldn't pay protection money, they were repeatedly beaten by several thugs and eventually died of illness because they couldn't afford medicine.

Unfortunately, she was recuperating at home during those days and found out too late.

Indeed, I heard that after a new county magistrate was appointed, these officials and constables have become somewhat more restrained on the surface, but they remain incorrigible in secret.

It has to be said that she hasn't adapted to life here yet, and tries her best to avoid trouble, living cautiously.

Take last night for example. These girls were forced to stay in a room. But not long after, three men came in and, without saying a word, picked out three of the tallest and most beautiful girls and carried them out.

Soon, the girls' heart-wrenching cries and the shouts of the men in black could be heard outside.

The girls inside were trembling, still not recovered from the shock.

One of the girls who was supposed to be taken away was thrown back, stabbed in the neck, and stopped breathing, her eyes staring blankly ahead.

The man in black, his beady green eyes filled with lust, then looked at the other girls, before grabbing one of them and dragging her out.

The girl screamed and cried out in alarm.

But Su Ruanruan was powerless to do anything about it and could only choose to protect herself, just like the other girls.

In the middle of the night, the three girls were brought back, barely clothed, their bodies covered in bruises and welts, clearly tortured beyond recognition.

Everyone trembled with fear, unable to sleep all night. A cold corpse lay on the ground, a "deterrent" to others. They could only cower in a corner and weep softly.

While feeling sorry for the murdered woman, Su Ruanruan also felt a bit of relief. Fortunately, she had been pretending all along, otherwise the woman would have been the one who was hurt last night!

Pulling her wandering thoughts back, Su Ruanruan examined the heavy dagger in her hand.

How exquisite! I wonder how much silver this dagger would be worth if it were sold for cash.

When will she be able to earn enough 500,000 taels to unlock her spatial ability?

Su Ruanruan touched the gemstones again and again, her eyes filled with envy, before she began to clean them carefully.

After an incense stick had burned, she wrapped the thoroughly washed dagger in a white cloth placed beside her and handed it to Jin Yu, who was resting under the shade of a tree.

He then returned to the girls' group and sat down on the spot like everyone else.

Last night, everyone was so scared that they couldn't sleep. Now, after eating half a steamed bun, they relaxed and sat on the ground, dozing off.

Su Ruanruan sat cross-legged, propping her head up with one hand, drowsy and just a little bit away from falling asleep.

But he was kicked hard from the side and fell to the ground.

Everything happened so suddenly that she ended up sprawled on the ground, looking completely disheveled. QAQ

The sand and gravel grazed her hands and wrists, leaving several scratches that made Su Ruanruan wince in pain.

Ignoring the pain in her hands, she touched her waist and gasped in pain.

It seems like this is going to break down!

She slowly got up from the ground and looked back at the mountain-like man beside her. She saw that his eyes were surging with anger, like a flood, as if he would drown her in the next second.

The air pressure around her was extremely low, and despite the scorching heat, she couldn't help but shiver and shrink.

The women around were also instantly awakened by the commotion, and dared not make a sound for fear of being caught in the crossfire.

The man bent down, his mountain-like body looming over him, casting a large shadow.

"Sir...Sir..."

"Where did the jewel on the dagger go?" he asked coldly.

"A gemstone?" Su Ruanruan was bewildered. Her gaze shifted to the dagger in his hand, and she noticed that one of the small gemstones was indeed missing.

But she only thought about it; she wouldn't actually dare to take the dagger.

She truly had no idea when the gemstone disappeared.

Huo Yan quickly caught her moment of guilt.

His brow furrowed even more, and his expression grew more somber.

Su Ruanruan shook her head frantically, "I don't know!"

"Don't know? Then why do you seem guilty?"

"Feeling guilty? No, no, I didn't. Sir, I really didn't take it. Maybe it just fell somewhere."

"Fall?" Huo Yan's expression turned slightly cold. He beckoned with his finger, and Jin Yu stepped forward.

"you say!"

Jin Yu hadn't seen his older brother like this in a long time; he was like an enraged wild beast, exuding a dangerous aura.

"I just went to the riverbank and looked in the river, but I didn't find it."

Su Ruanruan looked down at his rolled-up trouser legs and sleeves, and saw that they were wet.

Huo Yan picked Su Ruanruan up like a chick, the meaning in his eyes was all too clear.

Su Ruanruan was on the verge of tears. "I really didn't take it. You can't wrong me."

Niu Mang's eyes darted around, and he pulled out a silver ingot. "Give that gem back to my brother, and this silver ingot is yours. If you can't pay, I'll take you to see the authorities..."

Jin Yu punched him in the chest and glared at him, "Shut up if you can't speak properly."

Su Ruanruan was weak-willed, and tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.

For the first time, someone doubted her character and falsely accused her of stealing.

Faced with these burly men, she was utterly speechless.

With nowhere to vent her grievances, tears flowed uncontrollably like a flood.

The crying made Huo Yan even more irritated, so he grabbed her by the back of her collar and led her to one of the rooms.
