The prisoner was quickly carried away, but her gaze remained fixed on the shocking crimson stain on the platform.
It was the first time in her life that she had witnessed an execution so closely, and it would be a lie to say that she was completely unmoved.
Those people who had just been covering their eyes and turning away, unable to look directly at the blood, now surged forward like a tide, eagerly dipping their steamed buns into the blood before carefully placing them back into their baskets.
"That's wonderful, son! There's finally hope for your recovery..."
"Human blood buns!" Su Ruanruan felt a wave of dizziness wash over her, and her stomach churned violently. She turned her head away, unable to bear the intense discomfort any longer, and began to vomit involuntarily.
Huo Yan was startled by this scene. He was about to step towards Su Ruanruan when the maid beside him suddenly screamed in terror, "Miss! Miss, what's wrong?"
Huo Yan turned his head and saw that Fu Xinrou's face was as pale as paper, her eyes were closed, and her body was swaying precariously. Clearly, she had suffered a mental breakdown due to extreme shock and had fainted on the spot.
Faced with this sudden turn of events, Huo Yan had no choice but to quickly turn around, pick up Fu Xinrou, and rush towards the nearest medical clinic.
Before leaving, Huo Yan couldn't help but look back one last time. He saw Su Ruanruan blocking the executioner who was trying to leave.
Su Ruanruan stood resolutely before the executioner, asking without fear, "Sir, all the prisoners are here, why is Fu Hengfeng the only one missing?"
The executioner merely glanced at Su Ruanruan before coldly replying, "Aren't you on very good terms with General Huo? Don't you even know this? Last night, General Huo personally went to the Hot Spring Villa to pay his respects to the Emperor, and with the immunity token in his hand, he rescued Fu Hengfeng and sentenced him to exile in Lingnan."
He looked up at the sky and said, "I'm afraid that person has already left the capital by now. This pardon can only be used once in a lifetime. I never expected General Huo to be so loyal and righteous as to be willing to use it to save the only bloodline of the Fu family."
Su Ruanruan felt a buzzing in her ears, as if countless bees were flying around, and the words she had just heard kept echoing in her mind—"It was Huo Yan who saved him."
The news struck her like a thunderbolt, leaving her utterly astonished. She never imagined that it was Huo Yan who had saved Fu Hengfeng's life!
He knew perfectly well how much he hated Fu Hengfeng, wishing he could eat his flesh and drink his blood.
Inside the clinic, Fu Xinrou remained unconscious for a full hour with her eyes tightly closed before slowly opening them. The thought of her lost loved ones brought tears streaming down her face; she wept uncontrollably.
"Brother Huo..." Fu Xinrou called softly to Huo Yan, who was standing to the side, her voice filled with endless sorrow and pain.
Huo Yan looked at Fu Xinrou silently, his heart filled with pity, but he didn't know how to comfort her.
His mind was filled with images of Su Ruanruan. What if she knew that he was the one who saved Fu Hengfeng's life...
After a moment of silence, he said, "I have instructed my men to properly bury your family members' bodies. Once you have recovered somewhat, you can go and pay your respects to them."
"As for the women of the Fu family and your elder brother, I have already asked a reliable person to take good care of them on their journey to exile, so you don't need to worry."
"Thank you so much, Brother Huo." Fu Xinrou's beautiful eyes were filled with tears, like a crabapple blossom swaying in the wind. She could no longer suppress her sorrow and gratitude, and suddenly threw herself into Huo Yan's broad, warm embrace, tears streaming down her face like a burst dam. "Brother Huo, now I'm destitute and alone..."
Just as Huo Yan was about to push away the delicate woman in his arms, he suddenly heard a low cough coming from outside the door.
Huo Yan looked in the direction of the sound and saw Wei Zheng standing at the door, looking at them with deep eyes.
Fu Xinrou blushed and hurriedly broke free from Huo Yan's embrace. She picked up a handkerchief and gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, her voice barely audible, "I'm sorry, I was rude."
Huo Yan gently comforted him, "It's alright. The doctor said you fainted due to excessive worry and need to recuperate. The medicine will be ready soon; have your maid serve it to you. Once you feel better, I'll take you back to rest."
Wei Zheng coughed twice and gestured for Huo Yan to follow him out. After a whole night of deep thought, he still believed that he had to tell Huo Yan about Su Ruanruan's pregnancy.
"Brother Huo, I have something important to tell you." Fu Xinrou's clear and melodious voice came from behind. Huo Yan stopped in his tracks, and Wei Zheng also turned around to look.
Supported by a maid, Fu Xinrou's small, pale face was devoid of color. She parted her lips slightly, "Congratulations, Brother Huo, on becoming a father."
Upon hearing this, Huo Yan looked bewildered and stared intently at Fu Xinrou, asking, "What does this mean?"
Before Huo Yan could react, Wei Zheng strode into the room, punched Huo Yan hard in the chest, and said irritably, "You're such a blockhead! Su Ruanruan is pregnant, more than two months along!"
"What did you say?" Huo Yan's eyes widened, his face filled with astonishment, as if he had heard the most unbelievable thing in the world. His gaze lingered on Wei Zheng and Fu Xinrou, and he asked in a trembling voice, "You... say it again!"
Fu Xinrou said softly, "Brother Huo, congratulations! You're going to be a father! Miss Su... she's carrying your child."
This sudden good news was like a thunderclap in Huo Yan's ears, leaving him at a loss for words.
