“Yes.” The boy’s gaze fell on the oil paper package in Gu Ji’s hand.
The enticing aroma made his stomach rumble.
"Want some? You'll have to tell me first how you ended up in such a state?"
The little boy pursed his lips and looked away from the oil paper package. "My father disappeared, my second uncle took over my house, and kicked my mother, sister, and me out. We had nowhere to go, so we went to seek refuge with my maternal grandfather, but on the way, we were robbed of our travel money by villains. We suffered wind and rain all the way, which is why we are in this state."
"Sister, we haven't eaten for two days. My mother is starving. Could you please give me two steamed buns and lend me some money for my journey?"
Su Ruanruan stroked her chin. "You really are pitiful, but I've never been one to show kindness, and I certainly won't do a losing business. I can give you the steamed buns, I can book a room for you and your child to rest for the night before you continue your journey, and I can also give you enough travel expenses. But you have to promise me that you'll pay me back five times the amount afterward. Can you accept that?"
The little boy hesitated for only a moment before making up his mind, "Okay, I'll listen to my sister."
Su Ruanruan nodded. "Very good."
She stared into the little boy's eyes and said, word by word, "I know you have nothing to offer me as collateral, but I'm willing to trust you with the utmost kindness. You won't let me down, will you?"
The little boy bowed to Su Ruanruan and said, "Thank you for your generosity, sister. I will definitely not let you down. I will repay your kindness tenfold."
"Sister, where can I find you then?"
Su Ruanruan smiled with satisfaction, "I trust you. Look for Su Ruanruan at the biggest tofu shop in the east of the city. If I'm not there, just look for the shopkeeper, Ziwu."
Gu Ji tugged at Su Ruanruan's sleeve and whispered, "Ruanruan, you're too kind-hearted. These days, things are much cheaper. Aren't you afraid of throwing good money after bad? Besides, the place he's going is so far away. Where are you going to get the money for their travel expenses?"
"You don't need to worry about the money, I have it here. Also, what you're worried about won't happen, I'm very good at judging people."
Although the little boy was dressed in shabby clothes, he had an extraordinary air about him and was clearly the young master of a wealthy family.
It's just that family changes have occurred, and such power struggles within "wealthy families" are common in storybooks.
In ancient times, people valued marriage between people of similar social standing. Although his mother was ill, one could still tell that she was a lady of high birth.
This noble demeanor is ingrained in one's bones; it cannot be cultivated overnight.
Therefore, she guessed that the little boy's maternal grandfather must also be a wealthy man.
She didn't lose out at all on this investment.
Besides, even if all the above conclusions are overturned, she still believes that a filial child won't be too bad.
She took out two taels of silver from her bosom and handed it to Gu Ji. "There's an inn up ahead. Help him settle his mother and sister in, and buy them three sets of clothes while you're at it. You also know medicine, so you can take a look at them too. I'll come find you at the inn after I've finished my business, okay?"
Gu Jinu pouted, "Oh no, I finally managed to get out with you."
Su Ruanruan tugged at his sleeve and said coquettishly, "Good brother, please give in to me, I'll buy you candied hawthorns later?"
"I don't want candied hawthorns." Gu Ji's eyes were indifferent, revealing neither joy nor anger.
"Then what do you want?"
"I want……"
Su Ruanruan blinked and looked at him curiously, but unexpectedly, he quickly placed a kiss on her cheek before she could react.
She grabbed the stunned boy and ran away quickly.
Su Ruanruan: ……
Su Ruanruan was left alone on the street, looking bewildered.
She didn't have anything to do; she just ran into someone she knew.
Some things you have to face sooner or later.
She slowly raised her head and met a pair of smiling eyes, and another pair of calm, still eyes.
Actually, she had already noticed him by then, but his gaze was so sharp that it was hard not to notice him.
She went upstairs nervously, heading towards the private room on the second floor.
After hesitating for a while at the door, he finally knocked on the tightly closed door.
But then I heard someone inside shout, "Get out!"
Even with a door separating them, the anger was barely contained.
"Neuropathy!"
Su Ruanruan picked up her foot and prepared to leave, cursing. She did owe him a gem, but that didn't mean she deserved to be humiliated by him time and time again. She still remembered how he bullied her in the grove.
But the next second, the door opened from the inside, and a man wearing a dark blue brocade robe came out. He had fair skin, a pair of captivating peach blossom eyes, and a faint smile on his lips.
He gestured for her to enter, and Su Ruanruan looked up at the man sitting in the chair drinking tea, her steps faltering.
Standing on the threshold, Su Ruanruan touched her chin guiltily. "Sir, I went to that place again today to look for your lost item, but I couldn't find it. I know it's very important to you and very valuable, but even the most valuable things have a price... I really have nothing to compensate you with."
"Why don't you name a price? I'll write you an IOU. I'll definitely pay you back little by little."
Wei Zheng looked at the two men with a bewildered expression, unaware that they not only knew each other but also seemed to have had some things going on that he was unaware of, which was quite interesting.
Huo Yan was already in a bad mood, but when she mentioned the dagger, he immediately threw his teacup to the ground. The crisp sound startled the other guests.
They all craned their necks to look this way, and Su Ruanruan immediately blushed, her eyes gradually reddening.
"Get out! I told you to get out, are you deaf?"
Su Ruanruan lowered her eyes. "Sorry to bother you."
