Chapter 11 Spending a Huge Sum to Return to the Countryside
Two and a half hours later, Yan Kui landed in Yun City, Yue Province.
The weather in Yun City was exceptionally cool. The late summer heat had been washed away by the wind, and a minty coolness floated in the air.
As I stepped out of the airport terminal, the eaves were still dripping with the remnants of last night's rain. A cool breeze seeped into the folds of my clothes through the cuffs and collar, but it didn't make me shiver; it only left a light, pleasant sensation.
This is Yan Kui's first time visiting Yun City.
I glanced at the address on my household registration book: Luoxia Village, Yangming County, Yuncheng City, Yue Province.
Yan Kui withdrew 10,000 yuan in cash from a nearby bank and put it in her bag, then found a hotel to rest for the night.
Whether it was because she was unfamiliar with her bed or because she was nervous about seeing her real family, Yan Kui couldn't sleep.
The next day.
Yan Kui got up early, ate breakfast, and then hailed a taxi on the roadside.
"Master, to Luoxia Village."
The driver, speaking with a local accent, said, "Young lady, I don't know where Luoxia Village is. Would you like to switch to a driver who knows the way?"
Yan Kui said "Oh," assuming that the driver must be new to the job and therefore didn't know the place.
So Yan Kui flagged down a few more cars, but the drivers all said they didn't know the way. However, one driver said he could go by following the navigation.
Yan Kui checked the navigation on her phone and showed it to the driver.
"Little sister, your place is too far. It's not worth it for me to take a taxi there and come back..."
Yan Kui looked at Luoxia Village, which was more than five hours' drive from the airport, on the navigation, and felt a little tired.
He said, "How much do you think is appropriate? Or you can use the meter, and I'll give you double when we get there."
The driver's expression instantly changed from troubled to happy, and he said, "Sure, sure, I've never been there before and don't know how much it costs. Taking the meter is the most reasonable option."
Yan Kui, carrying her small bag, sat in the back row and replied, "Okay, let's go."
The driver sped along, and Yan Kui looked out the window for a while before taking a picture of the taxi driver's license with her phone.
Seeing her actions, the driver didn't say anything and just drove on silently.
Yan Kui was using navigation and looking at the scenery outside the window. She originally wanted to keep an eye on the road conditions the whole time, but she couldn't stay awake because of drowsiness.
Two hours before reaching their destination, Yan Kui fell asleep.
In her daze, Yan Kui heard someone calling her.
Yan Kui woke up with a start, glanced out the window, and immediately checked the location on her phone's navigation.
Seeing that she seemed frightened, the driver said somewhat apologetically, "Young lady, don't be afraid, I'm just a legitimate worker..."
Suddenly remembering something, he added, "There's no road ahead, the car can't go any further, you might have to walk. Check if the navigation is correct?"
Yan Kui got out of the car and glanced at the narrow dirt road in front of her.
Thankfully it didn't rain, otherwise her clothes would have been ruined if she had walked over.
"Brother, how much is it? I'll pay you."
When the driver heard her say that, he happily pointed to his watch and showed it to Yan Kui.
"700 yuan, that's 1400 yuan round trip, hehe."
Yan Kui took out about two thousand yuan from her bag, counted out 14 bills, and handed them to the driver.
"Thank you, brother."
The driver took the money and replied happily, "You're welcome, little sister. Please come to me again if you need this kind of work in the future."
Yan Kui nodded, looking at the navigation on her phone, feeling a little uneasy.
Seeing that she didn't speak, the driver started the car, stepped on the gas, and drove away.
Yan Kui carried her small bag, glanced at the navigation, and saw a straight path on the screen, but it would take two hours to walk there.
Seeing that there were only two bars of signal left on her phone in the upper right corner, Yan Kui gritted her teeth and decided to go.
