[Sheng Tian 14] Winter in Massace State
Winter in Massachusetts is a long and solemn ceremony.
The biting wind carried the moisture of the Atlantic Ocean. Yan Sheng turned up the collar of his dark gray coat, his sharp jawline partially hidden in a soft cashmere scarf.
The exhaled white breath condensed briefly in the air before dissipating.
Her black hair was slightly disheveled by the wind, which only made her forehead appear smooth and full. Her eyebrows were like ink paintings, but her eyes were like a lake covered with thin ice in winter—clear, calm, and with a hint of distance.
On the streets of Boston, the wind blows unhindered across the Charles River, like a cold knife slicing across your cheek.
Li Yucheng, who was standing next to Yan Sheng, handed him the extra coffee in his hand, and then wrapped half of his face tightly with a scarf.
"I heard you chose advanced courses instead of core courses, bro, do you have to push yourself so hard?"
"Yes, I've already spoken with my academic advisor. I can go back a year early after I complete all the required credits."
The two entered the library one after the other. Yan Sheng shook off the snowflakes that had fallen on his shoulders and sat down in his usual spot.
Li Yucheng looked at the boy opposite him who quickly got into study mode, shook his head, and didn't know whether to call him a robot or someone who was obsessed with studying.
He and Yan Sheng came to study at the same time. They originally planned to stay here for one or two years, and with this resume, they would enjoy better treatment when they returned to school.
But to my surprise, some people actually wanted to stay here until graduation.
It's important to understand that the country only sent them here as exchange students, not for them to work themselves to the bone to get a degree here.
Not to mention that three years have been compressed into two years.
Li Yucheng laughed inwardly, feeling that he had truly encountered a madman.
Taking a sip of his still-warm coffee, Li Yucheng closed the document in front of him and said, "Hey, Yan Sheng, you haven't been bringing your phone with you lately, have you? Aren't you worried your crush won't be able to find you?"
The long, slender fingers paused halfway through turning the page.
Seeing him start to stare blankly, Li Yucheng asked awkwardly, "Have you lost contact?"
"no."
"What is that?" Li Yu asked curiously.
"I will be back soon."
Li Yucheng stared at him, as if he had heard something shocking.
"You fucking..."
"You're working so hard just so you can go back to her sooner, right?"
"Really? Are you love-struck? Do you know how difficult these courses are? If you don't pass, the instructors will demote you!"
Yan Sheng knew, but he knew even better what he should do.
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
This sentence almost choked Li Yucheng to death; being love-struck is truly terrifying.
After leaving the library, the two headed to their advisor's office.
Yan Sheng went back to Altons midway through his trip and came out of his apartment with his phone in his hand.
Standing in front of the office building, Yan Sheng opened his phone and even breathed a sigh of relief when he saw there were no WeChat messages.
Seeing his expression, Li Yucheng chuckled twice: "You're so happy that people aren't contacting you?"
Yan Sheng looked up at him, then tightened the scarf around his neck: "No, it's just that I'm afraid she'll be sad if I don't reply to her in time when she talks to me."
A voice drifted softly from the gap in the scarf: "She loves sharing her life and enjoys talking to people."
"But in my current state, I can't take care of her feelings."
"Aren't you afraid she'll find another man to share her?"
Yan Sheng stood at the back of the sixth-floor corridor, his heavy eyes looking out at the gray sky and the twisted, withered branches along the road. Occasionally, three or five people would appear in the middle of the road, huddled together talking. Even his black coat seemed unable to block out the bone-chilling cold.
"I'm scared, so I'll go back as soon as possible."
That same phrase again.
Li Yucheng felt he had been too talkative, and thought he must have been possessed by Wan Weizhou to ask such a stupid question.
"Alright, alright, I know you really like her, stop bragging to me, I don't understand."
After receiving the materials from the teacher, the two returned to their apartment.
Looking at the large package that had just been delivered downstairs, Li Yucheng knocked on Yan Sheng's door.
"It seems your sister sent you something again."
Once the banquet was opened, it was filled with local specialties from Taipei and Nanshi, or some of the food that Aunt Min made that could be stored.
Yan Sheng didn't tidy up; he simply put the items that needed to be frozen into the refrigerator, then gestured with his chin to Li Yucheng: "Take whatever you want to eat."
Li Yucheng didn't stand on ceremony with him. He was sick of eating white food. Before, Yan Sheng could at least cook and eat together, but now the kitchen was covered in dust and no one went in anymore.
Picking out some snacks from the box, and looking at the four-figure cookie brand, Li Yucheng suddenly asked, "Yan Sheng, I heard from others that you're a rich second-generation from Taipei?"
"no."
Li Yu clicked his tongue in amazement; this man was so humble.
"When I was a freshman, Chu Chuan and I overheard a guy in the hallway saying that you used to be at Dechuang and that your family was very powerful. He spoke very eloquently about it."
"We've been brothers through thick and thin together, why are you still keeping it a secret?"
Yan Sheng knew he had misunderstood. After confirming, he sent the homework on the computer to the teacher's email before opening the box that Yan Kui had sent.
"I'm not hiding it. My family isn't well-off. My sister and brother-in-law are the wealthy ones, and I've received a lot of care from them."
Li Yucheng didn't understand what this meant: "Does your sister's wealth mean you're wealthy too? It's all your family's money, why are you dividing it up so meticulously?"
“My parents passed away when I was sixteen, and I didn’t reunite with my sister until I was eighteen. She also raised me and sent me to school after I became an adult, so it’s different.”
Li Yucheng's smile froze on his face. He had never imagined that Yan Sheng would lose his parents at the age of sixteen.
Seeing that he didn't speak, Yan Sheng turned around and smiled broadly: "What are you standing there for? Help yourself to whatever you want to eat. My sister will send me more next month."
Li Yucheng recalled that he had complained to Yan Sheng about his mother's nagging a few days ago, but he never expected that she would hit him where it hurt.
He opened a box, took out a small package, stood up, and patted Yan Sheng on the shoulder.
"Okay, let me know if you need anything, although there's nothing I can do to help you."
Learning can be tedious and boring, not to mention the huge gap between intermediate and advanced courses.
Li Yucheng consistently maintained an above-average level in his coursework; if he simply kept this up, he could easily return to China and graduate smoothly as an outstanding graduate.
During that time, I didn't forget to play games with my friends for a few days.
However, in the following short year, to Li Yucheng's surprise, Yan Sheng miraculously managed to complete all three years' worth of credits in just two years.
Looking at the emails sent by the teacher and the announcements posted on the school website, Li Yucheng felt a tingling sensation in the back of his head.
He excelled in every school from childhood to adulthood, and was known as a genius for his top grades.
At that moment, for the first time, I felt the fear of being left behind.
Moreover, this person was his roommate with whom he had lived for three whole years.
Li Yucheng admitted that he was severely provoked.
I quickly took out my phone, left all of his dozens of game groups, and changed his ID to "Retired from gaming for a year, do not disturb".
"Damn it, I'm not going back before I graduate."
