Chapter 05 Chapter 5

Chapter 05 Chapter 5

Wen Ying has been in the profession for several years and claims to have mastered the art to perfection. No matter what strange demands the parties may make, or what unexpected evidence they may present in court, she can remain calm and respond calmly.

But at this moment, she thought her face must be very ugly. Wen Ying could feel the muscles in her face drooping uncontrollably.

Wen Cong tugged at her sleeve and said, "Sister, I don't really want to eat crab. I've been having some allergies lately."

Wen Cong is always so understanding.

Perhaps she is the only one in the entire Wen family who has a sincere heart.

Wen Ying came back to his senses, took the steps handed to him by Wen Cong, and smiled apologetically at Feng Jichun: "Brother Jichun, I'm sorry, let's go somewhere else."

Feng Jichun has been running the business for more than ten years, so he could easily see through Wen Ying's misconduct.

He smiled cheerfully, seemingly unfazed, and enthusiastically told Wen Cong, "There's a new Korean restaurant across the street. I've been there. The decor is very unique, and the dishes are beautiful for photos. Young people like you love it the most."

Wen Ying thanked him: "Thank you very much, Brother Jichun."

She emphasized, "Don't tell Chen Li I was here." Wen Ying shrugged awkwardly, "He's too mean. If he knew I didn't say hello when I came to eat, he'd blame me for being impolite when he gets home."

Feng Jichun walked them to the door and said, "Sometimes I feel like you two are really a pair of enemies. Shen Li is serious and reserved. I've only ever seen him speak harshly in front of you."

Wen Ying couldn't deny it: "It seems that one of us will be a prosecutor and the other a lawyer. It was destined from childhood."

Wen Cong stood outside the door, looking up at the second-floor window, and suddenly said, "I haven't seen my brother-in-law in a long time. I thought he was too busy with work to have dinner with us."

"Brother-in-law?" Feng Jichun was genuinely dumbfounded. "Who are you talking about? Shen Li?"

His eyes were filled with shock and stopped on Wen Ying's face.

Wen Ying took Wen Cong's shoulder and hurriedly said goodbye to Feng Jichun: "No, she was talking about someone else. Goodbye, Brother Jichun, I wish you a prosperous business."

------

Chen Li drank a sip of ginger tea and glanced out the window unintentionally, but unexpectedly seemed to see Wen Ying's figure.

She walked quickly into the door of a restaurant diagonally opposite with a young girl.

The figure passed by quickly, and the dim light bulb was blocked by the yellowed sycamore leaves. The light was not very good and it was blurry.

It seems to be just an eye movement.

Zheng Di tilted her head, blocking his view with her face, and winked playfully: "What are you looking at?"

Chen Li put down his teacup. "It's windy outside." He didn't eat much. He placed one hand on the table. The plain ring on his bony finger was very conspicuous. "I'll go home early. The forecast says it's going to rain tonight."

Zheng Di smoothed her wavy hair, revealing her slender white collarbone. A look of disappointment crossed her face. "I asked you out four times, and I finally managed to keep the appointment, but you sent me home in less than an hour?"

Chen Li picked up the phone beside him and turned to Wen Ying's chat box. The conversation record inside stopped three days ago.

Shen Li: "Where is it?"

The message was sent, but fell into silence with no one paying attention.

Zheng Di was bright and beautiful, and her every move was full of charm. Even her disappointment and anger were just right: "I heard from Zhongsheng that Wen Ying was transferred back to Min City. Are you in such a hurry to go home because you're afraid she'll ask about it?"

Zheng Di crossed her arms, propped up her chin, and smirked at Chen Li. "Your marriage is just in name only. If you're planning a divorce, I can represent you in your case. Wen Ying and I are both handling the marriage and inheritance lawsuits. I believe I can help you achieve the best outcome."

Chen Li put down his phone and let out a faint breath, seeming a little impatient. His fingers tapped the glass of the table, making two crisp "thumps." "I'm not planning on getting a divorce."

Zheng Di's expression changed slightly, but she immediately put on a smile again, her big eyes full of confusion: "Is she unwilling? She keeps dragging you along?"

"I didn't want to," he interrupted Zheng Di, leaning back in his chair and looking at her with a frown. "Lawyer Zheng, don't overstep your bounds and pry into other people's privacy. This should be a professional ethics that all lawyers understand."

Zheng Di's delicate eyebrows furrowed, a look of grievance on her face. "Prosecutor Shen, we've been classmates since high school. Although we attended different undergraduate schools, we had the same supervisor for graduate school. As old classmates, is it inappropriate for me to be concerned about your personal life? I'm very sad to hear you say that."

"What exactly do you want to talk to me about today? Didn't you say you had something serious to tell me? I've been very busy lately and rarely have free time. If you have nothing else, I'll go home and rest first."

Chen Li didn't want to pay attention to Zheng Di's blame. His mind was full of the figure that just flashed by - was that Wen Ying?

Zheng Di smiled playfully: "How can I get you an appointment if I don't say this? Shen Jian, I know you are busy and stressed at work, so it is necessary for you to come out and relax."

The phone finally vibrated, and Shen Li immediately clicked it.

Wen Ying: "Outside"

Then another one.

Wen Ying: "What's the matter?"

Chen Li thought for a moment and replied, "It's getting windy and cold outside, and there's rain in the forecast. Do you need me to pick you up?"

Wen Ying: "No, thank you very much."

Shen Li was a little frustrated and couldn't find out where Wen Ying was.

Zheng Di, who was sitting opposite, was somewhat dissatisfied with Shen Li's distraction and knocked on the table: "Hey, Shen Jian, not playing with your phone while eating is the minimum respect for the people sitting at the same table."

Feng Jichun came up from downstairs, carrying a plate of shredded ginger and orange peels. "Here's to you. Crabs are cold in nature, and eating some shredded ginger can warm your stomach."

Zheng Di, Shen Li, and Feng Jichun were all high school classmates. Although Feng Jichun's grades were poor, he was warm-hearted and kind-hearted, and everyone in the class disliked him.

Zheng Di took the plate and said, "Thank you, Boss Feng."

Seeing that Feng Jichun seemed to have something to say, Shen Li took the initiative to move forward and said, "Sit down."

Feng Jichun sat down and turned his head to see the ring on Shen Li's hand.

It's not like he hadn't seen it before, but he had never associated this ring with marriage.

He and Shen Li were not distant, and he also knew Wen Ying. If Shen Li married Wen Ying, why would he not tell him? Feng Jichun couldn't figure it out.

Seeing that he was hesitant to speak, a prosecutor and a lawyer at the table looked at him with keen eyes.

"Something to say?" they both said in unison.

Feng Jichun was stunned at first, then raised his hands in surrender and laughed: "I will never hide anything from the prosecutors and lawyers again."

He looked at Zheng Di, as if trying to decide whether to speak or not. Finally, he made up his mind and moved closer to Shen Li: "Are you married?"

Shen Li didn't want to publicize his marriage, but he didn't intend to hide it either. When Feng Jichun asked, he answered honestly, "Yes, it's been almost four years."

Zheng Di added: "It's just an empty name."

Shen Li said in an unhappy tone: "Zheng Lu, don't make random statements without evidence."

Zheng Di shrugged nonchalantly, "I'm not wrong. Who would get married without a word and then quietly leave the country after marriage? She's just using you as a lifeline to keep herself afloat."

She said with some sourness: "She lent it to you, but you took it seriously."

Feng Jichun sensed something was wrong. He glanced at Shen Li and Zheng Di's faces, deciding not to get involved in this complicated relationship.

After a little thought, Shen Li was able to guess why Feng Jichun suddenly asked this question.

He stood up, grabbed his coat, and asked Feng Jichun, "Did Wen Ying come in just now?"

Although Wen Ying had warned him otherwise, Feng Jichun's balance always leaned towards Shen Li. He nodded and said, "I said you were on the second floor, and she went to the restaurant across the street."

Feng Jichun made way, and Shen Li took a long step forward, nodding to Feng Jichun and Zheng Di: "It's going to rain soon, I'm going to take my wife home."

Feng Jichun said goodbye to him, but Zheng Di's face turned pale, he pinched the ginger shreds with his fingers, pursed his red lips and said nothing.

------

The meal with Wen Cong was not very quick.

Young college students rarely have the opportunity to dine in such an expensive restaurant. Wen Cong started taking pictures as soon as he sat down in the restaurant, and continued taking pictures after the dishes were served. Finally, he carefully selected the angles and took a series of selfies.

Wen Ying had a poor appetite. She only drank a few mouthfuls of thick soup and then leaned back on the soft sofa to watch Wen Cong taking pictures enthusiastically.

Wen Cong finally had her fill, and her phone battery was running low. She closed it with a lingering feeling, noticing Wen Ying's somewhat weary expression.

She said cautiously: "Sister, are you in a bad mood?"

Wen Ying shook her head: "I just feel a little tired."

"A lot of things going on lately?"

"Yes," Wen Ying sighed, "At work, in life... there are always some tricky things that need to be dealt with. I envy you, Congcong. When I was your age, I didn't have any worries."

She omitted the second half of the sentence - perhaps her biggest worry at that time was Shen Li.

Wen Cong comforted her: "Things will eventually pass, don't be too tired, sister."

I haven't seen much of her in the past three years, and I don't know when my cousin has grown up to the point where she can say such philosophical words.

Wen Ying smiled: "Thank you, I will remember your words."

Wen Cong stuffed a mouthful of beef into his mouth and spoke incoherently: "Sister, is your ancestral house going to be demolished soon? My father has been talking about it a lot these days, and I dare not say anything."

The demolition was public, and there was no way to hide it. Wen Ying nodded, "I've heard the demolition plan."

Wen Cong blinked his eyes: "Can I get a lot of money?"

She then waved her hands to explain herself: "Don't worry, sister, I always thought this row of ancestral houses should have been yours. I just haven't seen the real demolition households, so I'm a little curious."

Wen Ying had always felt that Wen Cong was untainted by the world, having grown up in a world of misery, and that even with a father as treacherous as him, he hadn't grown up in a bad way. She loved seeing her little cousin's exaggerated expressions, which carried the clarity and energy unique to youth, so she joked, "That's a really huge sum of money. I've never seen so much."

Wen Cong cheered and looked at Wen Ying flatteringly: "It seems that sister will take me out for big meals more often in the future."

"A piece of cake." Wen Ying nodded.

After the incident in Feng Jichun's store just now, Wen Cong probably guessed that there was something wrong in her marriage with Shen Li. During the meal, even though Wen Cong was chattering, she carefully avoided all topics about Shen Li.

After dinner, the two walked out of the restaurant and found that it had started raining outside.

The late autumn rain, coupled with the strong wind, feels bitingly cold on the skin.

Wen Ying had a client meeting today and was wearing only a thin shirt and skirt suit. After just a moment of standing at the restaurant door, her face turned pale from the cold.

Wen Cong pulled Wen Ying to go back in: "Sister, let's call a taxi first and come out after the taxi arrives."

Wen Ying nodded, turned around and took out her cell phone.

Just as he was about to take a step, a black SUV on the side of the road suddenly turned on its lights.

The driver's door opened and a tall man got out of the car, holding up a large black umbrella.

His figure was tall and slender under the street light, and his black umbrella was slightly raised, revealing the man's fine face.

"Xiao Ying," Shen Li's magnetic voice whispered into Wen Ying's ears, "I'm here to pick you up."
