Chapter 21 Chapter 21

Chapter 21 Chapter 21

Wen Ying was startled and nearly fell down because of her slippers. Fortunately, she was nimble and managed to hold onto the countertop to avoid making a fool of herself in front of Shen Li.

"I'm a little hungry. I want to find some snacks to eat in the bedroom." Wen Ying felt a little guilty and didn't dare to tell Chen Li that she was going to cook noodles.

But who could possibly deceive the prosecutor? Shen Li walked over, stretched out his long arm, and pulled out a pack of instant noodles from the top cupboard. He was also very considerate and took Wen Ying's lie into consideration: "I happen to have instant noodles. Do you want some? I can cook it for you."

I couldn't ask for more.

Going with the flow is a basic skill for lawyers. Wen Ying looked at him with a smile: "That's fine."

"That's fine..." Shen Li smiled to himself as he unpacked the package. "It seems lawyers' mouths are made of rubber bands. They can bend and stretch."

"Don't you hate it most when I cook in the middle of the night?" She leaned on the countertop and watched Chen Li cook noodles in an orderly manner. "I remember when we were in school, you always loved to stop me in the kitchen in the middle of the night. If you caught me eating secretly, you would be so angry that you would jump up and down."

Chen Li took an egg from the refrigerator and said, "It's obvious that you're always careless when eating. You say you're full after just two bites, and then you get up in the middle of the night to have a snack. If you keep doing this, you're bound to have stomach problems." He felt helpless when he said this. "I took strict precautions, but I didn't expect that you'd still cause problems with your stomach."

Wen Ying took credit: "But it has gotten much better in the past few months, at least much better than when I was in Jiangcheng."

Shen Li nodded and said seriously: "Keep working hard."

The soft light from the kitchen shone on Shen Li's profile. His tall and rugged nose divided his face into two parts, one half of which was gently lowered, and the other half was hidden in the darkness.

The water was boiling, and the dough gradually softened and expanded in the water. Shen Li stirred it with chopsticks and said to Wen Ying, "I'm going on a business trip to Chengdu tomorrow afternoon. The mission is very tight and important, and I can't say when I will be back."

Business trips were commonplace for Shen Li, so Wen Ying didn't take it seriously and just casually said, "Is the case difficult?"

Shen Li looked at her: "Remember the last time we went on vacation to the beach, I received a call that a prisoner suddenly changed his confession?"

"I remember," Wen Ying recalled, "he said he was tortured and forced to confess."

"The person was originally arrested in Chengdu, and his temporary detention and interrogation were also in Chengdu. We went there this time just for this matter."

Wen Ying also realized the seriousness of the situation: "It's difficult, isn't it?"

"It's indeed difficult," he frowned, then suddenly remembered that Wen Ying was still by his side. He relaxed for a moment and shook his head, "There will be a way."

Wen Ying knew that he didn't want to say more, so she stopped asking and took the cup to pour some water to drink.

Chen Li added, "I'll let you drive while I'm away from Minshi. I ordered another car for you last weekend, but it'll probably arrive next month."

Wen Ying was shocked: "You ordered a car for me?"

Chen Li cracked an egg into the pot. "I wanted to order it a long time ago, but I was too busy and didn't have time." He looked at her. "It's your birthday soon. Consider it my birthday present to you."

Wen Ying tutted, "Inspector Chen is so generous." She was worried about him again, "He gave me a car this year, but what will he give me next year? I'm really worried that Inspector Chen will go bankrupt."

Chen Li laughed out loud: "I won't go bankrupt that easily. If you want, you can start thinking about what gifts you want for next year."

She knew Chen Li's temper very well. Since she had decided to buy it, there was absolutely no way she could return it. She took a bowl from the cupboard and said, "Thank you for the gift, but I can't use your car for the time being. I have the subway and Didi to commute to work, so driving is really troublesome."

Shen Li glanced at her with an inexplicable look of worry.

Wen Ying's heart skipped a beat, and she became nervous: "What's wrong with you?"

He turned off the heat and poured the instant noodles into a bowl. A hazy haze enveloped Shen Li's face. "I'm not too worried about Wen Lei—I'm not in Min City, so you should be more vigilant. Last time he let Wen Cong get you drunk, it really tore you apart. I'm really afraid he'll do anything for money. So, Xiaoying, you can drive me to and from work. At least I can guarantee your safety."

Wen Ying hadn't anticipated Wen Cong's betrayal, and it was this unexpectedness that dealt her a fatal blow. For a long time, Wen Ying didn't dare think about that night, nor did she dare recall the details of the sisterly love she had shared with Wen Cong since childhood.

She lowered her head, her shoulders looking desolate and helpless. After a long pause, Wen Ying spoke softly, "You're right. I can no longer trust anyone in the Wen family. To them, no matter how hard I try, I'm nothing more than a found outsider." She sighed, "I've long known I have a weak family connection, but I always harbored illusions. Now that those illusions are shattered, I won't believe they'll let me go."

The two of them sat across from each other at the dining table. The aroma of instant noodles piqued Wen Ying's appetite. Holding the bowl, she asked him, "Are you really not going to eat a single bite?"

Shen Li was very determined: "I brushed my teeth."

Wen Ying didn't bother to be polite with him. She contentedly held the big bowl and ate noodles with her head down.

After taking a few bites, she thought of Zhou Boyu's test tonight, so Wen Ying asked Chen Li: "Do you think our marriage can be considered happy?"

Chen Li was surprised by her sudden question and raised his eyebrows: "There is definitely still a gap between happiness and perfection, but I will try my best."

He noticed Wen Ying's thoughtful look: "What?"

Wen Ying shook her head, took another bite of noodles, and mumbled, "Someone asked me this tonight, and I suddenly became curious about how you felt."

Shen Li's sharp radar began to sound an alarm, and he sat up straight: "Who would ask you such a question?"

"Zhou Boyu," Wen Ying didn't hide it, "He seems to think our marriage is in tatters, and he wants to play the role of a warm and considerate savior by my side."

Chen Li sneered: "You haven't even cleaned up your own mess yet, and you still have the extra energy to care about others."

Wen Ying followed suit with a smile: "For him, this kind of thing is just a piece of cake. I guess as long as he wants it, he doesn't have to put in any effort, and someone will naturally come forward to please him." She was quite proud and looked up at Chen Li, "Doesn't this indirectly illustrate my charm? A woman who can make Zhou Boyu spend time and effort on her must be very charming."

Chen Li gritted his teeth and said, "Your charm is simply unmatched. It seems that I need to apply for a transfer to a logistics position in the future so that I can keep an eye on you every day."

Wen Ying laughed non-stop: "Do you think I'm someone without any bottom line? No matter how good Zhou Boyu is, he's not you."

This remark touched Shen Li's heart. He finally felt better and looked at her with a smile: "Lawyers are really good at talking. They always catch the point I want to hear the most."

Although Wen Ying was hungry, she didn't have a big appetite. After eating the fried egg, she reluctantly ate half of the noodles and then complained that she was full.

Shen Li got up to wash the dishes, and said helplessly that she was wasting food.

He stood next to the sink, his tall body slightly bent, water droplets splashing on his big, bony hands, and the bowl in his hands looked like a small toy.

Wen Ying's heart suddenly moved, and before she realized what she had done, she had already reached out and put her arms around Chen Li's waist from behind.

Shen Li's action of washing dishes suddenly stopped, and then returned to normal, except that his ears were red as if bleeding.

"What's wrong?" As Shen Li spoke, he felt a numbing resonance in his chest.

Wen Ying leaned against his back and shook her head: "Nothing."

Chen Li quickly rinsed his hands and wiped them with a paper towel before turning back. He hugged Wen Ying in return and looked down at her: "Unhappy?"

Wen Ying denied: "No."

Neither of them said anything, they just felt the temperature in the room gradually rising.

Wen Ying clutched Chen Li's clothes and whispered softly, "Chen Li, have you ever imagined what it would feel like to kiss me?"

Shen Li's Adam's apple rolled up and down twice, his face flushed, and he cleared his throat and said, "I'm afraid you'll think I'm abrupt."

"I wouldn't consider you rude." Her eyes were bright and wet, like a pair of black gems immersed in water. "Bold assumptions and careful verification—isn't that the professional quality of an excellent prosecutor?"

Shen Li stared at her intently, his breath growing heavier. If his gaze had warmth—Wen Ying thought—she would have been burned to pieces by Shen Li by now.

His lips finally pressed down, with some tentativeness and nervousness.

His lips were soft and slightly cool, and his breath carried a masculine scent that was both familiar and unfamiliar to Wen Ying.

Is it...this how it feels?

Wen Ying closed her eyes and felt Shen Li's careful touch.

Not enough, she thought, not nearly enough.

My heart is like a dry haystack, which will burst into flames with just a little spark.

Unsatisfied, she opened her mouth and rushed forward in a rage. In the chaos, their tongues touched, and Shen Li's body stiffened like a board.

Men are all natural geniuses in this area. Wen Ying felt that in just a moment of breathing, he had taken the initiative and held Wen Ying in his arms, kissing her more and more fiercely and passionately.

He carefully traced her lips, and then gradually sucked on her lips and the tip of her tongue with force.

Wen Ying couldn't help but groan due to the numbness and pain.

This voice was like a horn of encouragement in Shen Li's ears. He simply lifted Wen Ying up into the air, held her legs and asked her to wrap them around his waist.

If she were still conscious, Wen Ying would never do such a shameful posture even if she was beaten to death. But now, she was already dizzy from Chen Li's kiss and dazedly obeyed his intention.

He placed her on the island counter, which was half a person's height, with one arm around her waist and the other big hand clamping her neck from behind.

The intertwining and swallowing of breath seemed to have no end. In the quiet night, Wen Ying could hear the erotic sounds overflowing from their lips and tongues.

This was too embarrassing. She shrank her body and wanted to retreat, but Shen Li didn't leave her any room to retreat.

"Xiao Ying," he held her lips in his mouth and called her in a vague murmur, "I'm so happy that we have this day."

If Chen Li hadn't held her up, Wen Ying would have nearly collapsed onto the counter. She seized the momentary opportunity, gasping for breath, breathing in the clear, bright air.

Chen Li rested his forehead against hers, looking at her with a smile in his eyes.

Wen Ying blushed so much she felt like blood was dripping from her face, and she just wanted to find a hole to crawl into. She had clearly been the one who took the initiative, but in the end, she was the one being kissed so hard by Shen Li that she was helpless. On the other hand, he looked so contented, smiling at her, which was really embarrassing.

She pushed him, but he didn't move.

"Let me down." Wen Ying scolded in a low voice.

He didn't let go and picked her up again.

Wen Ying cried out in surprise, her legs subconsciously clamping around Chen Li's waist. After regaining her balance, she angrily lowered her head and bit Chen Li's hard shoulder.

His heart was swelling, but he didn't feel any pain, and his grin widened.

Chen Li walked into Wen Ying's bedroom and gently threw her onto the bed. Wen Ying was angry that he had teased her in this way just now, and she raised her foot to kick him, but Chen Li grabbed her ankle.

"You'd better be quiet and wash up and go to bed," he looked at her with a smile, "otherwise I really can't help but move in here to sleep tonight."

Wen Ying was a typical person who looked strong on the outside but was actually weak. She immediately lost her temper and waved her hand in a very obedient manner: "Good night, Chen Li. Please help me close the door."

He laughed heartily, then leaned over and kissed Wen Ying on the forehead. "Wait for me to come back," he said. "Wait for me to come back and celebrate your birthday."
