Chasing Husband
The hospital corridor seemed endless. Si Qi clutched the urgent letter, his knuckles white. Every word on the letter cut into his retina like a knife: "Accelerated glandular failure...Immediate hospitalization recommended...Final stage..."
Shao Wei was sorting papers in his study, oblivious to the impending storm. Si Qi stood outside, watching him through the half-open door. Sunlight filtered through the gauze curtains onto Shao Wei, casting a soft glow on his pale face. He looked so calm, so... ordinary, like just an ordinary husband working on an ordinary afternoon, not a patient on his deathbed.
Si Qi took a deep breath and pushed open the door.
"Commissioner Shao, we need to talk."
Shao Wei raised his head, his eyes flickering as he looked at the envelope in Si Qi's hand. He closed the folder and asked, "What are the results from the hospital?"
"You know how serious the situation is." Si Qi's voice was hoarser than expected. "Why didn't you tell me the truth?"
Shao Wei stood up and walked to the window. His back was as straight as a pine tree, and there was no sign of illness. "What will it change if I tell you?"
"Everything!" Si Qi took a few steps forward, grabbed his shoulders, and forced him to turn around. "We can find a better doctor and try more treatments—"
"Siqi." Shao Wei interrupted him softly, his icy blue eyes as calm as water. "I have consulted the world's top experts. There is no miracle."
This sentence hit Si Qi's stomach like a heavy punch. He loosened his grip and stumbled back a step: "Impossible... We've only just begun..."
The corners of Shao Wei's mouth turned up slightly, almost a smile: "At least during this period of time, I am very happy."
Si Qi suddenly hugged the person into his arms, with such force that Shao Wei almost couldn't breathe. He felt the real body temperature in his arms, smelled the increasingly faint scent of cedar, and suddenly realized that he might soon lose all of this forever.
"Go to the hospital tomorrow." His voice was hoarse. "Don't refuse."
Shao Wei nodded gently in his arms.
That night, Si Qi searched through all the medical records at home, trying to find a glimmer of hope. At three in the morning, he went into the study and decided to look for other medical reports that Shao Wei might have hidden. When he opened Shao Wei's desk drawer, a black leather notebook caught his eye.
The notebook looked old, its edges frayed. Si Qi hesitated for a moment before opening the first page. The date was neatly written on it—the day before their wedding.
"I met Siqi today. He still doesn't remember anything about Kyoto. But it doesn't matter. Being able to stand beside him like this is much better than I imagined."
Si Qi's fingers began to tremble. He quickly flipped through the pages, each of which recorded a brief fragment of life, all about him.
"Siqi worked late again today. I brought him some tea, but he took a sip and put it down. I'll try adding a little lemon tomorrow."
"He's in a sensitive period. He's gentler than usual. Even though I know it's just instinct, I can't help but indulge in it."
"The Lin Group's people were testing him again at the dinner. We had someone check Lin Mu's background and found that there was indeed a problem. We dealt with it."
Siqi's heartbeat was getting faster and faster. He turned to the nearest page, which read:
"The food was poisoned. Luckily, I tasted it first. The doctor said it's a new pheromone inhibitor, especially dangerous to Alphas. Si Qi can't find out, or he'll cancel the cooperation with Lin. That project is too important to the company."
The date was two months ago - exactly when Shao Wei's condition suddenly worsened.
Si Qi's vision blurred. He remembered how Shao Wei had tasted his soup at dinner that day and declared he had no appetite. Then, in the middle of the night, he heard vomiting coming from the bathroom. At the time, he'd thought it was just a simple stomach ailment...
The notebook slipped from his hand and fell to the ground, the last page open. There was only one line of words on it:
"If one day I am gone, I hope Siqi can find someone who will take care of him."
Si Qi knelt on the ground, his chest aching as if it were being torn apart. For three years, Shao Wei had been loving him in this way, silently, unconditionally, even at the cost of his own life. And yet, he had never truly seen it.
The next morning, Si Qi forcibly sent Shao Wei to the best ward in the hospital. Shao Wei did not resist, but quietly cooperated with the various examinations, as if it were just a routine matter.
"The situation is worse than we imagined." Doctor Li called Siqi to the corridor, his face solemn. "Mr. Shao's pheromone glands have been depleted by 70%. Conventional treatment may not be effective..."
"Is there any other way?" Si Qi interrupted her, his voice hoarse, "Any method, no matter how much it costs."
Dr. Li hesitated. "There is an experimental treatment that involves transplanting glandular cells from a matching Alpha partner. But it's extremely risky and requires a rare genetic compatibility between the donor and recipient."
"Use mine." Si Qi said without hesitation.
"You don't understand that this transplant could result in a permanent reduction in the donor's pheromone capacity..."
"I don't care." Si Qi said word by word, "Let's test the compatibility."
The test results were beyond everyone's expectations - the glandular cell compatibility between Si Qi and Shao Wei was as high as 98%, which was almost a medical miracle.
"That's incredibly unusual." Dr. Li reviewed the report. "Even between Alpha twins, it rarely exceeds 80%. Is there any special connection between your families?"
Si Qi shook his head. Although the Shao and Si families were old friends, he had never heard of any blood relationship between them.
Treatment began immediately. The first phase required Siqi to provide fresh pheromone cells daily, which were injected into Shao Wei's glands via a special instrument. The process was painful and long, but Siqi never missed a single one.
However, Shao Wei's condition continued to deteriorate. On the fifth day of his hospitalization, he fell into a coma with a high fever. Si Qi sat by his bed, watching his beloved entangled in various instruments and tubes, his heart aching. Shao Wei's cheeks were abnormally flushed from the high fever, and his breathing was shallow and rapid.
When the nurse came in to change the dressing, she tactfully suggested that Siqi go back and rest.
"I won't leave." Si Qi held Shao Wei's hot hand tightly, his voice as low as the whimper of a wild beast.
In the stillness of the night, Si Qi locked the ward door and released a flood of soothing pheromones. The scent of sandalwood and tobacco filled the room, gently enveloping the occupant of the bed. He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Shao Wei's palm, finally allowing himself to break down.
"Please..." Hot liquid flowed out of Siqi's eyes, soaking the snow-white sheets, "I need you."
Outside the window, the moonlight watched all this coldly.
The next day, Dr. Li brought worse news: "Mr. Shao's body is beginning to reject the treatment. If it continues to deteriorate... you may need to consider..."
"No." Si Qi's eyes were red. "Try again."
"Mr. Si, you've reached your limit." Doctor Li looked at his haggard face with concern. "Continuous extraction of pheromone cells is very harmful to the donor."
Si Qi just repeated: "Try again."
Just then, his phone rang. The name "Lin Mu" appeared on the screen. Si Qi wanted to hang up, but for some reason he picked up the phone.
"I heard your partner is in bad condition?" Lin Mu's voice was sickeningly sweet. "What a shame."
Si Qi's fingers clenched the phone: "What do you want to say?"
"I happen to have an experimental drug specifically for pheromone disorders." Lin Mu chuckled. "Perhaps we can discuss terms?"
Si Qi's blood froze instantly. He looked at Shao Wei, who lay dying on the hospital bed, and remembered the words in his notebook: "The food was poisoned."
"It was you." His voice was terribly low. "It was you who poisoned Shao Wei."
A voice of mock surprise came from the other end of the line: "Oh, that's not something you can say casually. But... if you're willing to give up the Gulf Project, I'd be happy to provide an antidote."
Si Qi closed his eyes. The Gulf Project was a strategic project that the company had invested five years of hard work in, and it was worth billions.
"Give me half an hour."
After hanging up the phone, Si Qi immediately summoned the medical team. "Check whether the Lin Group has recently registered any patents for pheromone drugs," he ordered.
An hour later, the investigation results confirmed Siqi's guess - Lin's Biotechnology did secretly develop a pheromone inhibitor two months ago, and urgently developed an antidote after Shao Wei was poisoned, but it has not yet passed clinical testing.
"It's too dangerous," Dr. Li said, objecting to the use of unproven medications. "It might accelerate glandular failure."
Si Qi stood by the window, watching the patients strolling in the garden below. One of them was an elderly couple holding hands, the man carefully adjusting his wife's scarf. It suddenly occurred to him that he had never taken such a leisurely stroll with Shao Wei before.
"Prepare for surgery," he said, turning around. "Use my glandular tissue for the transplant."
Dr. Li looked at him in shock. "That means removing at least 30% of your glands! You might permanently lose some of your pheromone ability!"
"I don't care." Si Qi said calmly, "Start preparing."
The surgery was scheduled for the next morning. That night, Si Qi sat by Shao Wei's bedside, whispering their few fond memories—their first encounter in Kyoto, the restrained kiss at their wedding, the rare tenderness during their sensitive period. The instrument beeped regularly, like a countdown to life.
"You know what," Si Qi stroked Shao Wei's thin cheek, "I never dared to admit that I married you not just because of my family's arrangement. From the first time we met, I was attracted to you. An Alpha who is even calmer and more self-controlled than me...how interesting."
He smiled bitterly and shook his head. "What a stupid reason. It took me three years to realize that it wasn't attraction, but resignation. You are the one destined for me, Shao Wei. From the beginning to the end, there is only you."
The ripples on the ECG monitor suddenly fluctuated violently, then returned to a steady state. Si Qi didn't notice this subtle change.
Early that morning, the nurses arrived to prepare for surgery. As they temporarily left the ward, Si Qi made an impulsive decision. He leaned over and pierced the glands at the back of Shao Wei's neck, performing a deep mark, nearly impossible for an alpha to achieve. The pheromones of sandalwood and cedar blended explosively in the air, creating a strangely harmonious aroma.
"Live." Si Qi whispered in his ear, his lips stained with mixed pheromones, "Give me a chance to love you."
When the medical staff rushed in and pulled him away, Si Qi was surprised to find that Shao Wei's eyelashes were trembling slightly.
"He's awake!" the nurse exclaimed.
Shao Wei's eyes slowly opened. His icy blue pupils, hazy from the high fever, reflected Si Qi's face clearly. His lips moved slightly, and his voice was so soft that it was almost inaudible:
"Love you..."
Then, before Siqi could respond, Shao Wei fell into a coma again. But this time, the vital signs on the monitor were significantly more stable.
"Incredible!" Dr. Li exclaimed after the examination. "The depth marking actually activated his remaining glandular function! While we can't cancel the surgery yet, at least we now have more time!"
Si Qi held Shao Wei's hand tightly and felt the dawn of hope for the first time.
However, fate seemed to test them further. When Si Qi was about to sign the consent form for the operation, Lin Mu rushed into the hospital with a team of lawyers and reporters.
"Mr. Si!" Lin Mu shouted exaggeratedly, the camera lens focused on Si Qi, "I heard that you are abandoning the Gulf project? Do the shareholders know?"
Si Qi looked coldly at the Omega who was taking advantage of the situation and said, "Get out."
"Oh, so fierce." Lin Mu pretended to be afraid and took a step back, but shook the metal box in his hand. "Don't you want to see the antidote? As long as you sign this contract..."
Si Qi strode forward, the Alpha's pressure causing everyone to unconsciously step back. He snatched the metal box and threw it to the doctor behind him, "Check it out."
Then, he turned to the camera and said word by word, "We can abandon the Gulf project. Committee Member Shao is more important than any business."
This statement was like a bombshell, sending shockwaves through the business world. Si Qi's phone was instantly bombarded with calls from the board of directors. He simply turned it off and focused on preparing for the surgery.
When Shao Wei was pushed into the operating room, Si Qi placed a light kiss on his forehead: "Wait for me."
The operation lasted eight hours. When Dr. Li finally came out, Si Qi's legs were numb from standing.
"Initial success." Dr. Li said tiredly but gratifiedly, "Your glandular tissue has almost no rejection reaction with Mr. Shao's body. This is simply a medical miracle. However..."
"But what?" Si Qi's heart was lifted again.
"We've discovered some anomalies," Dr. Li said, handing him a genetic test report. "Your pheromone glands and Mr. Shao's have traces of artificial editing, likely genetic manipulation during embryonic development. This explains your high compatibility."
Si Qi looked at the report in shock: "You mean..."
"Someone deliberately designed you to be a perfect match," Dr. Li said meaningfully, "Twenty years ago."
