Chapter 101 If only she weren't a cat! ...
Yun Tianjiao was very angry, extremely angry. But amidst her anger, she felt a vague unease, fearing that she would remain a cat forever, and that Zhiwei would not recognize her, forcing her to search for her elsewhere day after day.
This feeling of being right in front of you and yet you ignoring me is just awful.
Yun Tianjiao threw a tantrum for the first few days, deliberately knocking things over or tearing the curtains in Zhiwei's palace into strips. However, Zhiwei seemed to be exceptionally tolerant of her little cat. No matter how much she made a fuss, he would not get angry. Instead, he would indulge her and ordered the palace servants not to interfere with her, let alone beat or scold her. Anyone who hurt a single hair on her cat would have to pay with their life.
Now Yun Tianjiao could walk around the Ghost King's Palace with even more impunity, but she was still sullen and exhausted after a few days of struggling. She could only silently follow Zhiwei around every day.
Soon the whole Ghost Realm heard that His Majesty the Ghost King had acquired a new spirit pet, a little black cat, who ate and lived with him almost every day, inseparable from him.
That day, after court had just ended, Zhiwei was painting in his study when Yun Tianjiao lay on his desk, her tail wagging gently. Sometimes she even thought that if she could stay like a cat for the rest of her life, just like this, accompanying Zhiwei, it wouldn't seem so bad.
She suddenly felt thirsty, so she rolled over and stretched, then stood up abruptly and strode over to get some water from the teacup beside her. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Zhiwei's painting and paused.
The woman in the painting is Yu Meng.
The former Ghost Princess A Meng had watched him paint her beloved countless times, just like this moment.
Pshaw, the person is right in front of you, but all you do is draw.
Feeling frustrated, Yun Tianjiao deliberately stepped on the inkstone soaked in ink, then pretended to walk past Zhiwei's painting as if nothing had happened.
The Ghost King paused slightly as he painted, looking at the row of cat paw prints left on the paper, and frowned slightly.
Yun Tianjiao thought he was about to get angry, so he stopped defiantly and stared at him.
She didn't know what was wrong with her; she just wanted to provoke him. Seeing that he didn't move, she flicked her paw again, pushing the inkstone next to her towards the edge of the table. Zhiwei finally looked up at her, and Yun Tianjiao was also looking at her. He pushed the inkstone even further to the edge; if he pushed it any further, the inkstone would fall, and ink would fly everywhere.
She's done similar things quite a few times in the last few days.
The Ghost King, wearing a silver mask, leaned forward slightly, pulling the inkstone back from the brink of danger. He then pulled Yun Tianjiao into his arms and sat back down in front of the painting.
"Look at your masterpiece."
Yun Tianjiao looked down and saw seven or eight plum blossom-shaped claw marks scattered on the almost completed goddess painting.
Despite the destruction of her painting, which had taken her several days to complete, Zhiwei was not angry at all. Instead, she dipped her brush in some ink and used the cat's paw prints to outline the shape of plum blossoms. She then drew plum branches to connect the blossoms, and soon added a plum blossom background to the goddess painting. Not only did she not ruin the painting, but she also enhanced it.
Zhiwei seemed quite satisfied with the work as well. She stamped the Ghost King's seal in the corner, then, after thinking for a moment, she picked up one of Yun Tianjiao's cat paws, dipped it in ink, and pressed her own cat paw print next to the Ghost King's seal.
He laughed and said, "You also have a part in this painting, so naturally I can't keep the signature to myself."
Yun Tianjiao looked intently at the two marks that belonged to them respectively. He initially found them interesting, but soon his heart was filled with a bittersweet feeling.
She's just a cat...
That's all we can do, just leave a paw print like this.
It was time for a meal, and the palace maids brought in all sorts of delicacies, most of which were prepared for the cats, even more elaborately than those prepared for His Majesty the Ghost King.
Yun Tianjiao strolled lazily along the table, sniffing this and licking that, showing little interest. Those foods that she used to love now seemed hard to swallow. In the end, she only picked out a dish of raw fish from the corner and ate it.
Yang Lan, who was serving nearby, exclaimed in surprise, "Oh dear, this little black cat never used to eat raw food. I thought the imperial chef would be scolded by His Majesty today."
"After all, it's a cat. Remember to remind the kitchen next time. I've noticed that it seems less interested in sweets lately and prefers dishes like fish and shrimp."
"Yes, fish and shrimp should be cooked in a lighter way. It used to like braised dishes, but now it hardly touches them at all."
The palace maids standing behind Yun Tianjiao were excitedly discussing the black cat's changing tastes, unaware that the Ghost King on the other side of the desk was looking at the kitten eating, his eyes beneath the silver mask seeming to reveal a hint of worry.
Yun Tianjiao became increasingly unruly in the court. On several occasions, he even openly ran out of the Ghost King's arms and jumped around on the heads of the court officials, causing chaos and confusion.
Faced with the black cat's mischief, the ghosts dared not speak out, knowing that the cat was His Majesty's beloved child, so who could say anything?
Zhiwei personally took the cat back into his arms, holding it in one arm and conjuring a scroll in the other. He addressed the ghost ministers and generals, saying, "Post this picture and command the millions of ghosts in the underworld to find the person in the picture. Once found, I will reward them handsomely."
The scroll unfurled in mid-air, and all the demons and monsters in the court stared intently at it. They saw a beautiful woman depicted on it, who looked more like a goddess than a demon.
Those who are older in the Ghost Realm know that back when the Ghost King was still a Ghost General, he had a lover in his heart, whom he had been searching for in vain. However, before this, His Majesty the Ghost King had never ordered all the ghosts in the world to search for him in this way.
However, since they haven't been able to find this person after so many years, the hope must be slim. It seems that His Majesty is just trying his luck, hoping to seize the last glimmer of hope.
However, to the utter surprise of these old ghosts, less than three days after the painting was posted, someone claimed to have found the person depicted in the painting.
...
When the woman who claimed to be the person in the painting entered the Ghost King's study, Yun Tianjiao was intently chasing a large, grayish-brown rat from the roof beam.
She had been eyeing this rat for the past few days, feeling a strange sense of familiarity about it, as if they had met before. As for how she, a princess of Yunchi Kingdom, a perfectly normal human girl, could have possibly met a rat, that was beyond her comprehension.
"Yu Meng, do you... still remember me?"
It wasn't until Zhiwei's excited voice came from under the beam that Yun Tianjiao pulled his attention away from the rat. In that moment of distraction, the rat vanished without a trace, disappearing to who knows where.
"You are...Cang Han?"
The woman's voice also suppressed her emotions as she softly uttered the name that only she had ever called.
"It's me." Zhiwei walked towards the woman and was about to hug her when a dark figure descended from the sky, menacingly blocking the two of them.
Yun Tianjiao's fur stood on end, and his bright cat eyes glared fiercely at "himself" opposite him.
The newcomer had the exact same face as her. At first glance, she looked exactly like Yun Tianjiao, but upon closer inspection, subtle differences could be found. Her appearance was almost a complete replica of the Goddess's Dream period, even more "authentic" than Yun Tianjiao, the original.
"Who are you?" Yun Tianjiao asked coldly, but the sound that came out of his mouth was still a cat's meow.
"Yu Meng" looked down at her, raised an eyebrow, and said, "Where did this little black cat come from? It's so fierce."
"Stop fooling around, go play somewhere else today." Zhiwei, who always indulged her, picked her up from the ground and walked towards the palace gate, as if she intended to throw her out.
"Open your eyes and take a good look! This is a liar! The real Yu Meng is me! It's me, Your Highness! Hey! When did you become so stupid!" Yun Tianjiao was furious. He struggled wildly in Zhiwei's arms and even tried to scratch him.
But she was just a cat, and no matter how much she struggled, she was eventually thrown out of the Demon King's study.
Yun Tianjiao frantically scratched at the door from the outside, trying to force his way in, but Zhiwei quickly added a restriction to the entire Imperial Study Palace. Clearly, he did not want anyone to disturb him and "Yu Meng".
The indoor lights flickered, casting two hazy, ambiguous shadows through the paper windows.
You've mistaken me for someone else! You've mistaken me for someone else!
How could you mistake me for someone else?!
Yun Tianjiao was both anxious and angry. Compared to her jealousy that Zhiwei had mistaken someone for someone else, she was more worried that this swindler of unknown origin might harm Zhiwei. He was still recovering from serious injuries, and his spiritual power was less than one-tenth of what it used to be; otherwise, he probably wouldn't have been so easily deceived.
I wish she could turn back!
If only she weren't a cat!
Why can't she turn back into human form!
Since becoming a cat, Yun Tianjiao had never hated being a cat as much as she did now. It felt as if a fire was burning inside her, and the power that used to provide her with warmth now seemed to be burning her to ashes, assaulting her limbs and bones, almost bursting her little black cat body.
Why can't I turn back into a human! Why can't I!
Seeing the two shadows reflected in the window, the woman's shadow raising her hand as if to touch Zhiwei's face, Yun Tianjiao finally went completely mad. Her blood boiled, her claws extended, and she gathered all her strength. With the determination to smash her head against the two tightly closed palace doors, she slammed into them!
She smashed the ornate wooden palace gate, breaking through the restrictions set up by Zhiwei in the process.
The loud noise attracted the attention of the two people in the hall. Zhiwei and "Yumeng" turned their heads at the same time.
In the depths of the Ghost King's dark pupils, the image of the girl bursting through the palace doors was reflected. A gentle smile curved his lips, and his eyes seemed to gleam with a myriad of colors. Almost simultaneously, he strode towards the girl, opened his arms, and embraced her.
Yun Tianjiao charged with all his might, expecting to be badly injured or at best fall flat on his face. Unexpectedly, he ended up in a broad embrace, meeting a pair of familiar peach blossom eyes.
Peach Blossom's eyes were filled with her at this moment, and she was smiling broadly.
"You're finally back, my Your Highness," Zhiwei whispered in her ear.
