Chapter 13: The Afterlife (1)

History classes are boring for many people.

The second-year high school students at Guangyu No. 1 Middle School are the last batch of students to be divided into arts and science majors.

After this class, China will no longer divide students into arts and science.

The students in Class 33 of Grade 12 had already decided what subjects to choose, and most of them chose science.

Although a small number of people chose liberal arts, they still had little interest in history classes. They only forced themselves to pay attention out of respect for the teacher.

The young history teacher walked into the hall. She had fair skin and was tall yet very slender. "Hello everyone, Teacher Zhou is ill, so I will be teaching you this class..."

The students were a little shy when they suddenly saw such a beautiful teacher.

The braver ones asked, "Teacher, what's your name?"

Xie Ruyi flipped open the book and laughed. "Xie Ruyi. Okay, today we're going to talk about a figure everyone is familiar with. He's a shining pearl in Chinese history, and even in world history. No one can erase his brilliance. He's also a renowned thinker, a wise ruler, and an explorer."

The students' hearts, attracted by their beautiful teacher, instantly dissipated. They held their breath and fell silent, then shouted out in the most excited words: "Emperor Jingyao, Yan Chengyu!"

Xie Ruyi looked at their young and energetic faces, with a lot of thoughts in her mind.

Little Fatty, look, many people remember you.

She calmed down and gradually got into the state: "Yes, it's the fish." Xie Ruyi paused: "Yan Chengyu."

The projector was turned on and the lessons in the history book were projected one by one.

There is a picture that takes up almost an entire page of the textbook.

This is almost impossible to happen.

But the editor said in the preface that such a person is worthy of our admiration.

Since China began compiling history books, countless versions have been updated, but no one has proposed changing this painting that occupies an entire page.

When the young man's heroic figure was reflected in it, the classroom suddenly became quiet, and even the chirping of cicadas outside the window became much quieter.

The young emperor was dressed in brocade clothes and a black cloak with dark patterns. He tilted his head slightly and looked at the koi in the pond with a smile on his face.

Night falls and the moonlight is cold.

There are also many palace maids and guards around, as well as the palace's exquisitely crafted buildings.

But the crowd had no time to appreciate it, their eyes were fixed on the young emperor.

It is a place of great gift and beauty. Even the spiritual energy of heaven and earth cannot give birth to such a pure and spiritual person.

He has a beauty that transcends the world. Perhaps describing him as beautiful seems vulgar, but others can't find any other words to describe him.

This painting records the scene of Emperor Jingyao holding a candle and strolling around Taiye Lake. There are two figures of the young emperor in the painting.

Everyone reluctantly shifted their gazes, and held their breath when they saw the next scene.

Perhaps because he was happy to see the fish, he opened his eyes a little wider, blinked his long eyelashes, and slightly curved the corners of his lips. He pointed at a pond of koi and said something to the painter.

Xie Ruyi pressed the remote control and a long paragraph of text appeared on the screen.

Everyone was still immersed in the painting and was suddenly interrupted, feeling quite distracted.

"What is he talking about? What is he thinking about?"

Even though they had seen it countless times, everyone still felt lost.

Xie Ruyi clapped her hands. "Alright, Teacher, we know that Emperor Jingyao has captured our imagination. But let's not look at that for now. What's even more attractive than his looks is his unparalleled political achievements. Everyone knows that Emperor Mingxi was nearly forty years old and had no children. The court tacitly agreed that Your Majesty would adopt a child. And yet, at this moment, Emperor Jingyao was born."

Historical records state that Emperor Jingyao was dead at birth, and it was his father who moved the heavens to bring him back to life. However, this is only recorded in the historical records. Emperor Mingxi's favoritism for Emperor Jingyao was unprecedented. Half of the Zhaoshu is dedicated to recording how Emperor Mingxi doted on this young child, a favoritism recognized by history.

Even so, Emperor Jingyao remained true to his ways. By the age of two or three, he recognized the suffering of the common people and even used a clever trick to persuade the Empress Dowager to protect a woman whose family was being destituted. Notably, both father and son advocated for and practiced gender equality. In Dazhao, operating a brothel was illegal, and no official or scholar enjoyed prostitution. The court highly valued the status of women, and at Emperor Jingyao's request, women were allowed to serve in the imperial court.

We might think that Emperor Jingyao was blessed with great fortune, but in reality, he endured much hardship. As the emperor's only son, he held great wealth and opportunity. Emperor Jingyao's childhood was difficult, and when he was six, Emperor Mingxi died. Surrounded by danger, he shouldered the heavy responsibility at a young age.

At this point, a student raised his hand and asked, "Teacher, can you tell us about what happened after Emperor Jingyao ascended the throne? How did others bully him? How did Emperor Mingxi come back to life?"

She emphasized the word "bullying" very strongly, and the other students also looked at Xie Ruyi eagerly.

Xie Ruyi was silent for a moment, and then she talked about the young emperor in her memories, and also mentioned the evil deeds done by the Queen Mother and others to the little fat boy.

When the students heard Emperor Jingyao running away crying, they also shed tears. Someone asked, "Teacher, your name is exactly the same as Lady Xie's."

Xie Ruyi gently changed the subject and talked about the little fat boy.

Listening to what she said, the students seemed to have witnessed how the young children were bullied and how they had difficulty walking, and they all burst into tears.

"Emperor Mingxi, please come and help his son!" someone cried out.

Xie Ruyi continued, "The historical records of this period are very vague. Scholars speculate that Emperor Mingxi was not dead at all, but was merely used to lure out the wolves and tigers. However, various signs indicate that the court officials were extremely afraid of Emperor Mingxi. Why he faked his death is unknown to scholars."

"Let's go back to Emperor Jingyao. After waiting for his father to return, he took power again at the age of fifteen. Within a year, he had already initiated tremendous changes. The changes in his early reign were just one of them. History books record that Emperor Jingyao was kind-hearted and a rare wise ruler in the world.

But in the eleventh year of Jingyao, he launched an attack on Japan, which is now our R Province. To this day, no one knows what Emperor Jingyao's motives were. Some believe it was for silver and gold mines, while others say it was for expansion. But these theories have all been overturned..."
