Chapter 39 Parents' Love for Their Son
"It's okay, I have it here. Let my daughter show you her skills today!" Su Heng deliberately made a joke.
Wen Shu waved his hands repeatedly: "Your father and I can go back and eat, no need to bother."
Su Heng pouted immediately: "How can that be possible? I can't even get a meal when I come to my daughter's house. My elder brother and younger brother will laugh at me to death."
Su Yue laughed heartily: "Can they still talk back to you? Just make something simple, we are in a hurry to go back."
Su Heng insisted: "That won't work. We must have a good meal."
They had almost eaten all the wild ducks in the river, and there were still two hanging in the kitchen.
Su Heng said she was going to cook, and Wen Shu hurried over to help.
Seeing this, Su Yue and Lu Mingchuan did not follow in. They turned around and noticed the pile of wood under the tree. The spliced base gave them a rough idea of what it was going to be used for.
Su Yue asked: "Can you also do carpentry?"
Lu Mingchuan said modestly: "I'm still learning, and I'm just following what's taught in the book."
Seeing that he had a method in his words and deeds, Su Yue was a little more fond of this son-in-law.
"What kind of chair are you making? Is it a base or bentwood?"
Lu Mingchuan explained: "This is a rocking chair. Su Heng said this kind of chair is more comfortable to lie on."
It turns out that this is what his daughter wanted. It seems that Lu Mingchuan still knows how to love his wife.
Su Yue said, "You haven't finished sawing the wood yet, right? I'll do it for you. Tell me the dimensions."
As he spoke, he quickly picked up his tools and started working. Lu Mingchuan did not refuse and sat beside him to help him.
In the kitchen, Wen Shu saw that the two people in the yard were getting along quite well, so he breathed a sigh of relief imperceptibly, turned around to help pick vegetables, and chatted with his daughter in passing.
"Are you used to being here? You don't have any elders to help you, so just tell your parents if you have any questions."
Su Heng took the wild duck from the beam and said with a smile, "It's fine, Mom, you don't have to worry about me. Look, this is the wild duck that Lu Mingchuan took me to hunt."
"It's enough if he treats you well. Since you chose him, just live a good life with him."
Wen Shu was about to hang the duck back up, saying, "You can keep this duck for yourselves. Just stir-fry some of the dishes Mom brought you."
Su Heng didn't listen, picked up the duck and walked around her, put it on the chopping board and started chopping it with a few "clangs".
"Don't worry, Mom. We don't lack food. Look, there are several big bags of rice piled on the shelf. You can take some back later."
Wen Shu went over to take a look and was relieved to see that it was indeed grain. He then laughed and scolded, "Who would go to their own daughter and son-in-law's house to beg for money? Keep it for yourself."
As she spoke, she opened the bag that Su Yue had just carried in and took out a small bag of carrots. There were also loofah and pumpkin vines in the bag, and she took out some as well.
"These are the radish seeds your brother asked someone to buy. He said they were new seeds and would be sweet when fried. I thought you'd like them, so I packed some extra for you."
In fact, I have almost installed them all. I didn’t buy many seeds, so I just planted that small piece.
Although Su Heng's brother also loved to eat it, he still reluctantly gave it up when he thought of his second sister whom he hadn't seen for several months.
Su Heng took it and said, "Thank you, Mom. I'll fry it and try it later."
Lunch consisted of braised duck in rice wine, fried eggs with green onions, spicy and sour shredded potatoes, stir-fried carrots, cold-mixed pumpkin vines, and a loofah soup.
The sour beans that were soaked earlier can also be eaten.
Wen Shu saw that she cooked so many dishes in an orderly manner, and they looked very good. She was no longer the same person as before who could burn the pot through while cooking.
I feel relieved but also a little sad. What I didn't learn at home, I became proficient in after getting married.
Su Heng brought the dishes to the table and her heart suddenly skipped a beat when she saw the rooms on both sides.
Fortunately, Lu Mingchuan was smart and came in early in the morning and closed the door, otherwise their separation would be difficult to explain.
Mr. Su and his wife both knew their limits and would not casually inquire into their daughter and son-in-law's rooms.
Su Heng was relieved and went to get the jar of rice wine that she had used to stew the wild duck. She asked Su Yue, "Dad, would you like some?"
Seeing her daughter cook such a big table of food, it was a treatment she had never enjoyed at home before.
Su Yue was a little flattered and nodded immediately: "Hello! Mingchuan, have some too."
Just as Lu Mingchuan was about to agree, Su Heng stopped him, "Dad, he can't drink recently. I learned an acupuncture method from a friend and have been giving him acupuncture recently."
Wen Shu said, "Then don't drink it. Your health is more important."
Su Yue was also surprised: "Wow, you can also give acupuncture, you are promising, then I will drink it by myself."
The others drank honey water, which was specially cooled by adding well water, and tasted cool.
Su Yue happily drank his wine and ate the dishes specially prepared by his daughter. He couldn't stop smiling and even ate an extra bowl of rice.
But remembering that he had to rush back in the afternoon, he restrained himself from drinking too much.
Su Heng discovered that her father seemed rough but was actually a thoughtful person.
After dinner, Su Yue helped Lu Mingchuan saw the wood that would be used next.
He looked around for other chores in the yard and helped out, even tidying up the vegetable patch. In short, he seemed to be restless.
Su Heng smiled and said, "Dad, we just finished eating, you should take a rest."
Su Yue shook his head: "Hurry up and finish it. You are in a hurry to go back. Your brother and your two brothers are worried about you at home. I'm afraid they will be torn off the roof."
Su Heng: "There's no rush."
As she was speaking, Wen Shu waved at her from the shade behind the house, and Su Heng ran over: "Mom, what's wrong?"
"It's nothing serious," Wen Shu said as he took out a small cloth bag from his pocket, which contained a few big unity banknotes.
She said, "This is the betrothal gift the Lu family gave you. When you married me, your father and I were afraid you would spend money lavishly, so we only gave you half."
"Now that I see you can manage your life, I'll give you the dowry your father and I saved for you. Our family is limited, but your parents will give you and your brothers the same share. There's no favoritism."
That was a full ten big unity bills, and in addition to the remaining forty betrothal gifts, the dowry was actually sixty.
The original owner once blamed her parents for being partial because of the 40 yuan betrothal gift that was withheld, thinking that it was meant to be used for her brother's marriage.
Parents who love their children will plan for them in the long run.
Nowadays, not to mention in the village, even in the city, a girl getting married only has a few quilts and at most a table.
The Su family is not a wealthy family. They are farmers who make a living from the land. It is unknown how long it will take them to save up this money.
This money is too hot to handle, Su Heng can't take it.
She can covet this family affection and enjoy the love of the original owner's parents, but she cannot really take the money they have worked hard to save.
"I don't want it. I have money. My eldest brother hasn't married yet. You can keep the money to buy him one."
Wen Shu was about to give it to Su Heng: "I've made you worry about your elder brother's affairs. Take it quickly. You don't have to worry about your brother's affairs. Just live your life with Mingchuan."
Su Heng refused repeatedly: "Then consider it my advance filial piety to you, Mom. The weather looks bad this year, so you can use this money to find a way to get some food from the city to store at home. I'm not short of money right now."
"Your father and I will find a way to deal with the food issue. There's no need to eat up our daughter's betrothal money now."
Wen Shu said this and stuffed the money into Su Heng's pocket without giving her a chance to refuse.
"You used to be the most money-obsessed person, but now that you're married, why are you becoming estranged from your family?"
After she said that, Su Heng couldn't refuse anymore.
