Chapter 7 Arrival at Destination

The place where we got off was the provincial station in Southern Province, and the educated youth were assigned to different counties.

When the person in charge calls out the names, you stand in the position of the county that is called.

Yun Yan listened carefully to the person in charge calling out her name. After a while, she heard her name called and was assigned to Jing County.

Yun Yan picked up her suitcase and walked to the gathering place in Jing County. After a while, she saw a few familiar faces.

Qian Qian, Li Shuwan, Chen Zhaodi, and the two boys sitting on the other side were all assigned to Jing County.

Qian Qian was very happy to see Yun Yan: "Yun Yan, why did you run so fast? I was just looking for you."

Seeing her carrying a lot of things, Yun Yan went over to help her: "I don't have much luggage, unlike you who have so many bags, so I can walk faster."

Chen Zhaodi didn't have much stuff, but Li Shuwan brought more luggage than Qian Qian, so she was helping Li Shuwan carry the luggage.

After a while, the car to pick them up arrived. After getting in the car, Qian Qian asked Yun Yan why she brought so little luggage. Yun Yan told her that her luggage had been sent in advance.

After sitting on the bus for an hour and a half, Yunyan was almost vomiting because of the shaking, but we finally arrived in Jing County.

The person in charge of picking them up said that the people from each brigade who would come to pick up the educated youth would arrive at around two o'clock, so there were still two hours left and they could move around freely.

Yun Yan looked at her watch. It would be about ten minutes until twelve o'clock, and the state-owned restaurant was open at that moment.

I was thinking that I didn’t know how long it would take to reach the assigned team, and maybe I would have to walk there by myself, so I decided to fill my stomach first.

Yun Yan took Qian Qian to the state-owned restaurant and left their luggage at the gathering point, where someone was responsible for looking after it. When they arrived at the state-owned restaurant, there were quite a few people eating there because it was a restaurant.

The menu of the state-owned restaurant today includes: braised pork, braised fish, stir-fried pumpkin shreds, homemade fried tofu, stir-fried cabbage, meat buns, steamed buns, dumplings and rice.

Yunyan ordered a braised pork, a fried pumpkin and rice.

Qian Qian ordered braised fish and stir-fried cabbage with steamed buns.

Li Shuwan ordered two meat dishes and a serving of rice.

Chen Zhaodi only ordered a homemade tofu and a steamed bun.

The braised pork here is not as delicious as the one Yunyan ate in Su City.

Yun Yan finished eating quickly, said goodbye to a few people, said she was going to the post office to pick up her luggage, and left first.

Walking to a deserted place, Yun Yan quickly took out the packed quilt and some other daily necessities from the space.

When we returned to the gathering point, Qian Qian and the others had already finished their meal and returned.

Around two o'clock, people from each brigade responsible for picking up the educated youth arrived one after another.

Liuyuan Brigade, Hongqi Brigade, Shangyang Brigade...

There are five brigades in total, and basically each brigade will accept four to six educated youth.

Yun Yan looked at the worried faces of the several leaders who came to pick up the educated youth and knew that they were probably also scared of the educated youth.

There was no way around it. The educated youth all came from cities and had never farmed before. Some of them even looked down on rural people because they were city dwellers and had received a few years of education.

The leaders of each brigade were selecting educated youth, and male educated youth were more popular.

In the end, Yun Yan, Qian Qian, Li Shuwan, Chen Zhaodi and two male educated youth sitting on the other side of the train were assigned to the same brigade: the Red Flag Brigade.

The person who came to pick up the educated youth was Liu Defu, the captain of the Red Flag Brigade. He took Yun Yan and the others to the back of the Red Flag Brigade's ox cart.

Li Shuwan looked at the ox cart with disgust, but Yun Yan didn't care about her thoughts and quickly put the luggage on the ox cart.

Just kidding, you're always complaining about this and that. You'd be lucky to have a bullock cart come to pull your luggage. I'll make Liu Defu angry and let you carry your luggage by yourself.

Seeing Yun Yan's actions, Qian Qian quickly put the luggage on the ox cart.

Because there was too much luggage, after all the luggage was put on the ox cart, there was no empty space left, so everyone had to walk to the Red Flag Brigade.

"Uncle Liu, are there many educated youth in our village? Can there be enough accommodation for so many of us?" Yun Yan caught up with the team leader Li Defu and asked.

In fact, she had her own selfish motives. She wanted to live alone. After all, she couldn't let others know that she had her own space. She also wanted to cook for herself.

"You have four women here this time. The female educated youth will definitely be crowded, but the male educated youth should be better off."

Chen Zhaodi was unhappy after hearing what Liu Defu said. "We came to the countryside to help you. How come you can't even get a better place to live?"

Liu Defu was already in a bad mood, and when he heard her words, he immediately flew into a rage. "We can't even get enough to eat, and now you've come and we have to share some of our food with you. You still have objections? If you have any objections, just leave and go back to your big city."

Liu Defu would not indulge her. These educated youth were originally forced into their team by their superiors. Now food was in short supply everywhere and was precious. Even one more grain was a good thing. Many people in their team had starved to death in the past few years.

Chen Zhaodi's face turned red after being told this. She looked at the people around her, hoping someone could speak up for her. After all, she was doing this for the benefit of all the educated youth.

In the end, no one paid any attention to her, which made her even angrier and she started to resent everyone present.

Yunyan felt that Chen Zhaodi was simply out of her mind. She couldn't see the situation clearly, and what good would it do her to offend the captain?

After walking for almost an hour and a half, Yun Yan still hadn't seen the village and was almost exhausted.

"Captain, how long will it take?"

Li Shuwan was the first one who couldn't hold on any longer. She asked Liu Defu while pounding her legs.

"It's almost there, just hold on a little longer and we'll be there."

Listening to Liu Defu's perfunctory answer, Yun Yan knew that it would take at least another hour to walk.

We walked and rested along the way, and finally arrived at the Red Flag Brigade at around five o'clock.

It was just the time when everyone was getting off work and going home, and we met a few aunts and sisters on the way.

When they saw the team leader bringing a few unfamiliar faces, they knew that they were newly assigned educated youth.

"Oh, the girls in this city are all so delicate and tender. You can tell at a glance that they have never worked before."

"Yeah, Goudan's mom, you're right. Look at the prettiest one. Can that little guy even carry a hoe?"

"I think among the few who came this time, only those two male educated youth can work. They are so strong and look like they are full of energy."

"He's not only strong but also good-looking, unlike those grown men in our village. I wish they could fall in love with my daughter."

"Hahaha, you're still dreaming, Cuihua's mother, don't you see how ugly your daughter is? The boy is not blind."

"My daughter isn't very pretty, but she has a big butt and is good at giving birth. If he can marry her, he will be very lucky."

A group of aunties and sisters were laughing and making fun of the educated youth.
