Lin A Niang didn't react at first.
Gou Suisui didn't say anything to her. He turned around and squatted back by the water to continue washing the Houttuynia cordata.
Wang Qiaoru pointed into the water and said, "Auntie, your clothes are floating away!"
Lin A Niang screamed "Ah!" and hurriedly fished out two pieces of clothes, almost falling into the water.
Two pieces of clothing fell directly into the middle of the stream, and Lin A Niang cursed and jumped up and down.
The only two people nearby pretended not to hear, quickly washed the Houttuynia cordata, and got up to leave the place of trouble.
But when the two of them returned home and were boiling water to prepare the rabbits, they heard someone shouting outside the yard.
"Gou Suisui, come out here!" Ge Wanying said arrogantly.
Gou Suisui had just peeled off the rabbit skin when Wang Qiaoru scooped up some boiling hot water mixed with cold water to wash her hands.
The two of them then came out of the kitchen.
"Ge Zhiqing, Zhu Zhiqing are here? I just came back yesterday, and you came today. Are you here to treat me to dinner?" Gou Suisui glanced at Lin Ya who was following behind them, with a teasing smile on his face.
Ge Wanying choked. She hadn't expected Gou Suisui to react like this. "Who's going to treat you to a meal? You caused my clothes to get washed away. You have to pay for it!"
Zhu Tingting followed up, "Gou Zhiqing, how can you be so shameless? Not only did you do something bad, but you even want us to treat you to a meal. You're not the type to take advantage of us, are you?"
Shortly after the New Year, there was not much farm work to do.
The idle young girls and wives, and even some nosy men, saw Ge Wanying coming to find Gou Suisui angrily, and followed her to watch the fun, shouting and making noises.
Wang Qiaoru was baffled. "Who caused your clothes to be washed away? We've only just come back from visiting relatives and this is the first time we've seen you. You should speak with integrity."
"And you, Zhu Zhiqing, you come here without any evidence and accuse me of being shameless, doing bad things, and taking advantage of others. Without investigation, you have no right to speak. Show me the evidence!"
Wang Qiaoru was almost angry to death.
Zhu Tingting frowned and looked at Wang Qiaoru with disapproval: "It doesn't matter if you make mistakes. As long as you are willing to admit your mistakes and correct them, you are still good comrades."
Ge Wanying wasn't as polite as her: "Why waste time talking to them? Just decide whether you want to compensate or not!"
Wang Qiaoru was always quick to argue, and she almost always spoke up to defend Gou Suisui, which made Gou Suisui feel warm inside.
Gou Suisui pulled Wang Qiaoru's hand and glanced at the two people who looked condescending.
She asked with a puzzled look on her face, "Ge Zhiqing keeps saying that I caused your clothes to be washed away. The villagers are all here. Why don't you tell me how I caused that?"
Ge Wanying scoffed, "How else could you harm her? Lin A Niang was washing clothes by the stream, and you dragged her to talk. She wasn't paying attention, and the clothes floated away with the current. If you hadn't done it on purpose, how could the clothes have been washed away by the water?"
Gou Suisui seemed to suddenly understand. She let out a long "Oh" and then asked, "If it's Lin A Niang's clothes, why didn't she come to me? What does it have to do with your clothes being washed away?"
Zhu Tingting was shocked and thought to herself, "Oh no!"
"Mother Lin washed our clothes, not hers. Don't bring this up. Admit that you spoke to Mother Lin!"
However, Ge Wanying was very angry at Gou Suisui's pretense, and before Zhu Tingting could stop her, Ge Wanying said it out.
Zhu Tingting pulled Ge Wanying and was about to speak.
Gou Suisui glanced at her and didn't give her a chance: "You? Are these your and Zhu Zhiqing's clothes?"
Ge Wanying had no idea what Gou Suisui was up to and was very impatient: "What else? Not only mine, but also Zhu Tingting's clothes, you have to pay for them all!"
Zhu Tingting's face turned pale.
Ge Wanying didn't notice it, but she could clearly feel that the way the villagers around her looked at them was not right.
