Chapter 40

The ground was stained with blood and their noses were filled with a foul smell. Chen Wan and Qin Ke walked quickly towards a row of large trucks at the service area.

Chen Wan counted again and confirmed that there were 8 large trucks parked here, and 4 large trucks were blocked at the exit. Chen Wan breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that all the materials needed this time were available.

"Be careful, there are zombies in the car, be sure to pay attention to safety." Chen Wan said to Qin Ke beside him.

"Okay, you be careful too." Qin Ke replied while observing the situation around him.

There are no zombies around here, so I just need to pay more attention to the situation in the car.

Chen Wan had already walked to a truck. She easily grabbed the handrail on the truck and went out of the cab. There were no zombies inside. Chen Wan smashed the glass window of the truck with the back of a knife, carefully climbed in, quickly looked for several wires under the steering wheel, started the engine, and reversed the car towards the densely packed cars.

Qin Ke's progress was also smooth. He successfully started a truck and drove it until it hit several cars before stopping.

After parking, Chen Wan and Qin Ke got off the truck again and went back to drive. Chen Wan gently hooked the handrail and climbed onto the cab of a truck again, but this time she and a zombie inside looked at each other. Chen Wan didn't care about the zombie's reaction. She raised her hand and used the back of the knife to break the glass. She stretched out her hand and slashed. The zombie was still roaring wildly when Chen Wan killed it with one knife. The zombie's smelly blood splattered everywhere.

Chen Wan opened the car door and pulled the zombie out. He then suppressed his nausea and sat in the driver's seat to connect a few wires. Then he started the car and drove behind the truck that had just passed by, gently letting this truck stick to the back of the previous truck.

She and Qin Ke moved quickly and in a short while had parked all eight trucks in the parking spaces. All they had to do was find two more trucks from the ones that had crashed into each other.

She and Qin Ke did not waste any time. They each chose a truck and climbed up, but this time there were zombies in the trucks.

Needless to say, Chen Wan could easily deal with low-level zombies. She could just smash the car window and kill the zombies inside with one blow.

Qin Ke encountered some troubles. She had an injury on her wrist and the human spine was very hard. It was difficult for an ordinary person to cut the spine with one knife. In addition, there was a zombie in the passenger seat of the car. Qin Ke had no choice but to use her pistol.

After a few shots, the two zombies in the truck were already dead. Qin Ke's left wrist was bleeding through the gauze because he was holding the door handle of the truck. It seemed that the old wound caused by the handcuffs had opened again.

She ignored the injury on her wrist and opened the car door. She first pulled the zombie out of the driver's seat, then opened the door on the passenger side and kicked the zombie down. Then she closed the door and quickly started the truck.

Chen Wan drove the car over first, got out of the truck and waited for Qin Ke on the side, ready to go back together.

Little did she know that her and Qin Ke's actions had already been seen by several people hiding on the second floor of the service area building.

"Should we go out? They can start the car without a key." A yellow-faced man whispered to his companion.

"I don't know, squad leader. We are running out of food. If we don't find a way out, we may all starve to death. Besides, Zhao Jingjing has been sick for several days, and there is no medicine here. Should we try to ask for help? Even if we just ask them if they know if there is a base or safe zone nearby." A female Omega with a ponytail asked worriedly.

"But, but they seem to have guns. It would be too risky to go out. What if they are bad guys?" A short-haired female alpha responded.

Everyone fell silent, and for a moment the room was silent.

The yellow-faced man who was called the class monitor also had a frown on his face, and was obviously thinking about something. There were five people in their group, and they were sophomores. Before the apocalypse, several of them, who were good classmates, signed up for a tour group to go out for a trip. Who knew that the apocalypse broke out before the happy trip they imagined even started. Their tour group stopped at this service area to rest, and many of them were infected and turned into zombies. They were quick-witted, took some supplies, blocked the doors and windows, and didn't make any noise. This is how they managed to survive for more than a month.

However, one of their female Omegas had been having a fever for several days and it hadn't gotten better for some reason. In addition, the supplies they had worked so hard to get were about to run out, so they were thinking about whether they could go out and ask for help.

In fact, they had already noticed it when the RV honked its horn not far away. The scene that followed was so frightening that their scalps almost exploded. Groups of zombies rushed towards the RV, so densely packed that it was obvious that there were hundreds of them at a glance. However, unexpectedly, the densely packed zombies did not cause any damage to the RV. Instead, they were either hit to death or directly crushed to death by the RV. From a distance, all they could see were piles of zombie corpses and the zombies that had already been killed.

The black bloodstains made it impossible to tell the original color of the RV.

These teenagers had never seen such a scene before and were so scared that they couldn't speak. It was not until they saw two people driving a truck towards the service area from a distance that they hesitated whether to go out and ask for help.

The short-haired woman gritted her teeth and said, "Well, I'll go out and take a look. If there's no danger and it's feasible, I'll wave at you. If there's any danger, don't go out and die, and don't worry about me. Just take good care of Zhao Jingjing and wait for rescue."

"How can this be? How can I let you go out alone? I'll go with you." A fat-faced male alpha responded, obviously afraid that his friend would go and die like this.

"It's better to die one person than a group of people. It's the end of the world now, and no one knows what will happen tomorrow. Let me go." The short-haired girl thought about it and felt that it would be better to go alone.

After a few seconds of silence, the squad leader looked at the short-haired girl and said, "No, I'm your squad leader. I should be the one to handle this. Listen, if anything happens to me, you all must follow Li Yue's instructions. She has a lot of ideas, so it's always right to follow her. Also, take good care of Zhao Jingjing. Promise me that you'll live one day at a time and never give up."

"Squad leader..." The fat man wanted to say something, but was interrupted by the squad leader.

"Fatty, I know what you want to say, but there's no need to do this. You stay and protect Zhao Jingjing and Qiao Shirui with Li Yue. It's already this time, we can't act on impulse. Every one who survives is a lifetime. I have to leave quickly, those two women look like they're leaving." The squad leader gritted his teeth and warned his companions, but in fact, he himself hadn't even celebrated his 17th birthday yet. In the final analysis, he was just pretending to be calm to reassure his companions.

Except for Zhao Jingjing who was still in a coma, everyone else looked at the squad leader with red eyes.

The squad leader took a wooden stick to defend himself, and then pretended to be relaxed and comforted him: "Don't worry, what if they are good people? Then you won't worry for nothing. Barrier the door after I leave."

The squad leader and the fat man moved the things blocking the door away. He didn't dare to look at his companions behind him. He gritted his teeth and walked downstairs with the wooden stick in his hand.

On the other side, Qin Ke also parked the RV. Chen Wan saw that the bandage on her wrist was bleeding and hurried over to ask, "Is the wound torn?"

Qin Ke shook his head and said, "It's okay, they are just minor injuries."

"How can you be okay? In the apocalypse, any minor injury could be fatal. You should rest well in the RV these days and you can't come out with me anymore." Chen Wan frowned and instructed.

Qin

Ke had a faint smile on her face. It was so nice to have friends caring about her like this.

"Okay, I'll play with Yangyang." Qin Ke responded.

While the two were talking, Chen Wan noticed someone coming out of the second-story building in the service area. He immediately raised his gun and pointed it at the person, "Who is it? Stop."

The squad leader didn't expect the woman to pull out a gun so quickly. He broke out in a cold sweat, but for the sake of his comrades, he still forced himself to speak: "Don't get me wrong, I mean no harm. I've been hiding from zombies in the service area. Now that we're running out of supplies, I thought I'd come out and ask if there's a base or safe zone nearby."

Chen Wan and Qin Ke looked at each other. They didn't take this man seriously, but it was obvious that neither of them believed what the man said.

Chen Wan lowered his gun slightly, looked at the man in the distance and said, "Drop the weapon in your hand and come closer."

The squad leader felt relieved when he saw that the woman's gun was no longer pointed at him, but he didn't want to throw away the wooden stick. Although the wooden stick had no killing power in his hand and was not as effective as a gun, it could still give him courage.

Chen Wan became a little impatient when he saw him hesitating, but thinking about the RV upgrade, he had to find out whether there were still living people in this service area. After all, in ten hours, 10 trucks and 100 cars would disappear out of thin air. Chen Wan didn't want irrelevant people to know the secret of the RV.

Chen Wan frowned immediately, "What's wrong? You can't even throw away your weapon? If I wanted to kill you, you would have been dead by now."

The squad leader gritted his teeth, thought about their limited supplies and Zhao Jingjing's illness, and simply threw down the wooden stick and walked towards Chen Wan with somewhat unsteady steps.

He was a little far away just now. When he walked closer, Chen Wan could see clearly that this man was not a man at all. At most, he was just a boy who was still in school. His face was full of immaturity and fear. It was obvious that he was very afraid of him and Qin Ke.

"Are you a student?" Chen Wan asked again.

"I'm not, I'm already 22." The squad leader denied in a hoarse voice. In the apocalypse, he couldn't let anyone know that he was a student. Students were so easy to bully, so of course he couldn't tell the truth.

Chen Wan chuckled and shook his head, then sighed and continued, "We're not bad people. If you want to get information from us, at least tell the truth. What about the others? Don't tell me you've been here alone for a month. No one would believe it. If you don't even have the sincerity to tell the truth, then I guess there's nothing we can do to help you."

Chen Wan turned around as she spoke. Of course, she wasn't leaving. She was simply putting pressure on him to explain everything he needed to. She didn't want any trouble to arise during the RV upgrade.
