Chapter 13: Reporting for Work

When He Ruixue arrived, the department store was still closed. She went straight to the back door but was stopped by the armed guard. "What are you doing here?"

"New employee reporting in."

After showing the letter of introduction, she handed over a cigarette of "Da Qianmen" that her eldest brother had given her before he left.

The guard checked the official seal on the letter and asked about her basic situation before letting her in.

Probably out of consideration for the cigarette, the guard pointed in a direction and said, "That's the office building. The HR department is on the third floor. Go there to report. I just saw their section chief. His last name is Shen. His office is the first one in the corridor. Don't go to the wrong place."

"Hey, thank you, sir."

He Ruixue thanked him politely, followed the direction he pointed, went up to the office building, and found the first office on the left.

There is a small iron plate on it, with the words "Human Resources Director" written on it: Shen Yufang. It seems I found the right person.

“Boom boom boom!”

"Come in."

When I walked into the office and saw that the section chief was not busy, I quickly handed over the letter of introduction, political review certificate, graduation certificate and other documents, "Section Chief Shen, I am a new employee joining today."

Shen Yufang has a neat Lenin hairstyle and is less than 40 years old. Her pair of almond-shaped eyes make her face look sharp and add a bit of heroic spirit.

She slowly added a pinch of tea leaves into the cup, sat down and wiped her hands before taking the thing from her hand. After flipping through it, she looked her up and down. There was no malice in her, just pure curiosity.

"So it's you, you're lucky. There are a lot of people eyeing this job, and it was originally assigned to the secretary's nephew. I heard he's a college student, so the secretary is waiting for him to show his skills.

As a result, he was like a fool, and he insisted on going to the countryside to build the village. By the time his family found out, his name had already been reported.

The secretary got angry and didn't want to give face to anyone. He said he didn't want the job because there were plenty of people who wanted it, so he just picked someone from the list of people who passed the exam..."

She smiled and opened the letter of introduction and registered her name on the employee roster, "You are the one he chose."

He Ruixue didn't expect that the system would give her the job in this way. It sounded wonderful and reasonable. In the eyes of outsiders, it was completely luck. She couldn't help but feel relieved.

The process is formal and is finalized by the secretary, so no one can find any mistakes.

"Fill out the form first."

Chen Yufang gave her a form containing all kinds of information about her family, hometown and education. After she finished filling it out, she copied it onto the employee registration form. In an era without the Internet, all matters seemed tedious and serious.

After quickly writing it down and checking to make sure there were no mistakes, Shen Yufang stamped it with the official seal, "Not bad, you're a high school student with a decent degree. The store has plenty of staff in both HR and finance right now, but the purchasing department is short of an officer, so you're the perfect fit."

Seeing He Ruixue nod, she continued, "But the one who just came in was a cadre. You are a high school student, so in principle you don't take up a position as a capable cadre. The higher-ups have called for staff reductions, so there's no room for staffing.

So your current situation is that you are doing cadre work, but nominally you are still a worker. If you perform well later, you can go through the formalities to be promoted to cadre."

In the early 1960s, the country was in economic difficulty and supplies were scarce. It could not support the growing cadre team and had to streamline the organization and transfer cadres to production.

When the economy recovered, the scale of factories expanded and the demand for cadre positions increased, but the superiors had no intention of expanding the establishment. So the unique form of "work instead of cadres" emerged, and some workers were transferred to do cadre work.

This is very common in government agencies and factories. The work and treatment are equivalent to those of clerks, but the status is still a worker, and the promotion opportunities are limited.

However, this was a pleasant surprise for He Ruixue. She originally thought she was just an ordinary worker, but she didn't expect to be able to do something.

And the purchasing department is a place that represents abundant profits.

Although she didn't want to take advantage of the company, she had this job as a cover. Later, she could get some supplies through the system and have better food, clothing and other necessities. Although people around her would be jealous, they would not have any suspicions.

Once people tell others that she is a buyer for a department store, how could she be lacking in good stuff?

She nodded quickly and said, "I understand. Thank you, Chief Shen. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even be able to be an officer."

Chen Yufang smiled. Because of some of her childhood experiences, she believed in supernatural things. Although she couldn't say it openly at the moment, she always felt that this girl was lucky. If she helped her, she might get some blessings.

"Here's your employment certificate and employee handbook. Go to the warehouse later to get a set of onboarding supplies, and then go to the cafeteria to get this month's meal tickets... By the way, you live in the city, right? Do you want to arrange staff housing for you?"

"I live at my brother's house, and it only takes half an hour to ride my bike there and back. I'm afraid I'll have to stay in the dormitory because I have work at noon."

Shen Yufang nodded, not surprised. Most of the older employees in the company, including her, did the same thing, taking lunch breaks at work, not to mention young girls who were not married. "Okay, take this note to the dormitory building later, and the building manager will help you arrange accommodation."

He Ruixue thanked him again and walked out of the office.

Following the guidance of passersby, she came to the warehouse. There were more than a dozen cement houses neatly arranged on the brick floor. They were not small in size and were specially used to store supplies. Each warehouse had a dedicated person to manage and guard it.

With her employment certificate, she received her employment benefits in the warehouse, including two sets of work clothes for spring and autumn, two sets of winter clothes, and a short Mao suit. The clothes for small employees like them were made of blue cotton and looked very sturdy.

Two pairs of pigskin shoes, a scarf and a pair of cotton gloves, plus two aluminum lunch boxes, two padlocks, and some miscellaneous office supplies such as notebooks and ballpoint pens. My hands are full, and the treatment is really good.

Then, she went to the cafeteria to get a meal ticket, which was the size of a bank card in later generations, a thin piece of yellow paper.

There are three lines of red words on it. The first line is: "Qingyang City Second Department Store Canteen", the middle one has a larger font size, "(four taels) rice 5 cents" / (half a catty) white flour, and the last line has the year marked in small letters: "used in 1968". The official seal of the General Affairs Department is stamped on the meal ticket and it is issued according to the month.

After picking up her things, she went to the dormitory building and planned to put her things away before going to the office.

The building manager was very easy to talk to. After understanding her situation, she assigned her to the third floor.

304, checked the house number, opened the door with the key, and as expected, it was empty. The aunt said that the people living here were all unmarried girls who had their own homes locally like her, and basically no one would come here in the early morning.

The dormitory is a four-person room with four beds on each side of the wall. There is a small cabinet at the head of each bed. There is no wardrobe, but there is space for boxes. If you have personal belongings, you have to move the boxes yourself to store them.

There were already two beds with bedding in this dormitory. He Ruixue chose the one by the window in the upper right corner, put her things in the cabinet beside the bed and locked it.

Seeing that more and more people were coming to work, she didn't even take a break. She hurriedly took her employment certificate and office supplies and went to the office building again.
