Chapter 22 Doctor Liu

The two children, He Xiaoai and He Xiaoyou, felt that they had lived a heavenly life for the past two days and even had two meals of meat in a row.

Especially for this meal, at He Ruixue's insistence, Wang Taozhi put all the bacon she brought back into the pot, and put several slices into each person's bowl.

There was also steamed cured duck. They each got half a duck breast and ate it with big mouthfuls. Their lips were shiny and they felt so happy.

As for He Ruixue, it was naturally the big duck leg that the old lady had promised. The meat was chewy and had a unique flavor of bacon. The more you chewed it, the more delicious it became.

The small taro at the bottom absorbs the soup, has a tender and smooth texture, melts in the mouth, and tastes better than meat.

He Xiaoai stared at the plate in front of her and swallowed her saliva, "Auntie, is it delicious? What does it taste like?"

"Would you like to try it for yourselves?"

He Ruixue tore off two pieces of meat from one of the duck legs and gave each of them to the two little ones.

The old lady was a little unhappy, but didn't say anything.

They just looked at it with envy and wanted to try something new. After tasting it, they all said it was delicious, but they were sensible enough not to order more.

After living at home for so many years, I have mastered the rules of survival, that is, when grandma is around, my aunt is definitely the one with the highest status.

After dinner, He Ruixue accompanied the old lady for a walk in the yard, and happened to run into Dr. Liu, who lived in the main house on the right, walking towards the door.

"Lao Liu, are you working overtime again?"

"Sister Zhao is here. She'll be busy at the factory for a while."

"That's the bad thing about being a doctor. People are always sick. I just saw Huixin sitting on the doorstep waiting for you."

"Hey, you go ahead and do your thing. I'll go back and eat."

Doctor Liu is a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. His current situation is not very good, but he works in the factory's medical clinic, so no one from outside deliberately bothers him.

He mainly performs acupuncture and massage. Textile factory workers spend long periods of time sitting still and moving their hands frequently, so they often have joint problems. This job is not glamorous but essential, and the life is much more peaceful than that of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in a large hospital.

His medical skills cannot be said to be superb, but he has learned from his master for more than ten years and has a legitimate inheritance. Usually, people nearby who have a headache, fever, chest tightness or shortness of breath will ask him to prescribe medicine. He does not charge for consultations, so he has a good reputation in this area.

In the eyes of the world, his only "flaw" was that he had no son. After more than 20 years of marriage, the couple had only one daughter. Even if they were to marry into the family, without a male heir to carry on the family line, when the parents passed away, it was uncertain who would inherit the family property.

However, his daughter Liu Huixin was very ambitious. She was very smart since she was young and started elementary school at an early age. While she was at the top of her class, she also found time to read medical books, learn to identify herbs, and practice the basic skills of observation, auscultation, questioning and palpation. She was never idle for a moment.

After studying medicine for several years, she was already able to diagnose some minor illnesses. No matter what people around her thought, they all said that she would have a bright future.

But Dr. Liu was as strict with her as ever. No matter how hard she tried, she didn't get any encouragement or praise.

Just like now, when Old Liu came home, Liu Huixin went out to greet him with a smile, holding an enamel pot filled with warm water, "Dad, you've been tired all day, drink some water and take a rest."

He took the cup and responded indifferently. The first thing he asked her when he entered the room was whether she had memorized the soup recipe song, and then he asked her a few random questions about difficult and complicated diseases.

Hearing that his daughter hadn't memorized something, he slammed the teacup on the table, his eyes sharp as he gently scolded her, "You're not a child anymore. You should know the importance of things. Your mother has to worry about all these things. What you should do is learn more and memorize more, and pass on the Liu family's medical skills. Don't let me have no successors."

Liu Huixin lowered her head and responded gloomily. She had just entered junior high school and she had already experienced the feeling of sorrow.

Old Liu ignored him and said, "Go eat. After that, continue reading Treatise on Febrile Diseases. After you memorize two prescriptions, I'll test you before you go to bed."

The two of them saw everything that happened in the Liu family. Zhao Meiya didn't understand. "Old Liu, it's not like he only has a few years left to live and needs to take care of his funeral. Is there any need to push his children like this?"

He Ruixue: “…”

Her mother has a really vicious tongue.

"He had too high expectations."

He was too anxious, afraid of gossip, and eager to prove that his daughter was no worse than his son, but he did not realize that too much is as bad as too little.

This is also a common problem among most parents in today's social environment. They think that raising a child is just adding a pair of chopsticks and as long as the child doesn't starve to death, they pay less attention to their children than to their reputation in public.

"I've lived for so many years and still can't figure it out. Even if the Sun family has a son, everyone will still laugh at them. What's the point? If your family is poor, even if you have eight children, you'll suffer. You'll be looked down upon wherever you go. If your family is rich, everyone will fight to be your son and take care of you until the end of your life. They'll be more filial than their own children."

The old lady came from the turbulent Republic of China, so these things were very common to her.

Several brothers were fighting over the family property by my bedside. Everyone thought my mother was partial and treated me like a ball. They sent me out to freeze in the cold weather and finally froze to death.

The head of a family with no wealth held the money tightly in his hand, and relatives who had no contact with him usually came to his bed to feed him water and wipe his body, serving him more attentively than their ancestors.

What you hold in your hands is yours.

He Ruixue put her arm around her and complimented her, "Of course, who can live as clearly as Mom? Now everyone in the village envies you and wants to learn from you."

Zhao Meiya curled her lips proudly, "Humph, I told the truth, but they just didn't believe me and thought I was hiding something."

"Yes, they don't want to spend money to raise their children properly after they're born, so they just hope to have more children. If one day, smoke comes out of the ancestral graves and a capable son is born, he will bring happiness to the whole family. How can such a good thing happen in the world?"

Her hand was held, and the old lady nodded repeatedly, quite approvingly, "As expected of my daughter, you and Mom think alike. You are the one in the family who is most like me. The others are just pretending to be smart."
