Chapter 29: Get used to it

Wang Taozhi counted the money, got on her bicycle and left home.

He Xiaojie was walking around in the yard, not wanting to face He Ruixue but unable to find a reason to leave. As she was thinking about this, she heard him whisper to her, "Come into the house with me."

"What?"

Mysterious.

He Ruixue didn't say anything, but just pulled her into the room. The quilt and sheets in the bedroom had been changed, and the desk was filled with other people's things.

She felt a little sad, because it was obviously her room.

My grandma's house is nothing compared to here. There are two layers of thick palm mats under her bed, and a cotton mattress on top.

Although it is thin, it is restacked every few years. The sheets are made by her mother using defective cloth. They are pure cotton without any linen. Even if you lie on them without clothes, you won't feel itchy.

The bed was covered with a thick quilt weighing eight kilograms. All the cotton her grandmother had grown behind the house was delivered to her, and she was told to dry it diligently and remember to use a pole to disperse the cotton wool while drying it.

So there is always a pleasant smell in the quilt, and it is soft and comfortable to sleep in.

As for grandma's house... she and several cousins slept on a big bunk bed with straw underneath, and it smelled moldy.

There was a big hole in the cabinet beside them, and from time to time they could hear the sound of mice gnawing on something. The quilt was so thin that light could see through it, and it was as hard as a block of iron. The sisters had to huddle together to feel a little warm.

Maybe there were bugs crawling under the straw, otherwise why would she start to get a rash on her body after only a few days of sleeping?

As she thought about it, she began to feel a sour feeling in her stomach.

He Ruixue took out a lunch box from her bag. When she opened it, it was full of braised pork with a layer of frozen oil floating on the surface.

He Xiaojie suddenly lost all her thoughts and swallowed subconsciously, "Aunt, where did this come from? Did someone invite you to the state-owned restaurant for dinner again?"

"No, we had braised pork at work yesterday, and I brought a bowl home. They all ate it. Today, I went to see my parents off, and I asked the chef in the cafeteria to make three more portions. I gave two of them home. This one is for you. It would be bad if everyone else in the family ate it and you were left out."

He Xiaojie glanced in her direction in surprise, feeling somewhat uneasy. "So you saved it for me? Aunt, you weren't upset, were you? Or did a colleague give you a hard time? Do you want me to teach her a lesson?"

Her aunt never looked at her in a good light. Even when she asked her to do something, she always acted condescending and bossy.

Could it be that someone taught her to use courtesy before force?

He Ruixue crossed her arms, a little irritated, "Why are you asking so many questions? If you don't want it, just forget it. Everyone else has it, but you don't. Telling others about it would be embarrassing."

He Xiaojie quickly put the lunch box in her arms, almost using both hands, and said cheerfully, "Thank you, aunt, just consider it a celebration for you to go back to work, let's celebrate together.

I've been living on coarse food in the countryside these past few days. I haven't had any meat, not even a scrap of egg. Thank you so much."

He Xiaojie felt that she had understood.

On the one hand, He Ruixue felt that she (the little follower) should not fall behind others, and on the other hand, she wanted to give her some sweet treats so that she would not think that she would be out of her control after graduation.

It seems that her methods this time are quite more roundabout, and she has become "gentler", at least treating her as an equal. Her mother said that she has become more sensible after experiencing hardships at work.

But she disagreed and even sneered at it.

It is said that human nature cannot be changed. If He Ruixue can change, even God can send down red rain.

The most likely possibility is that this guy was ostracized by his colleagues at work. After being hit, he finally realized that not everyone would indulge her, and then he discovered her good points.

He Ruixue said indifferently, "I'll give you the lunch box too. I didn't need an industrial ticket to buy this. It's new."

He Xiaojie touched the new lunch box with envy, "You have a great job. I have a classmate whose family has connections but she still didn't get a job as a salesperson. It's only because of her aunt's influence that this doesn't look like a defective product."

The lunch box she used at school was the one her brother had used before. There were several dents on it and the lid wouldn't close properly. Her mother thought it was fine as long as it was usable and was unwilling to buy her a new one.

My sister-in-law is really generous. She gave me something worth several dollars just like that.

"My colleague left it for me, so of course I don't see any big problem with it."

"Auntie, you get along well with your colleagues."

"We have a lot of cloth coupons at home, so I gave her a few and she did me a favor."

She said, for no reason, with my aunt's personality, how could anyone truly interact with her?

He Ruixue didn't care what she was thinking and walked towards the kitchen. Sure enough, there were two omelets in the pan.

She turned her back, wrapped the loving dinner her mother had left for her in oil paper and put it in her storage space, then took out two steamed buns made of two-grain flour from her bag.

He walked back to the house and handed it to He Xiaojie. "Here, eat one first to fill your stomach. Go and heat up the meat before eating. Remember to hide from others so that my sister-in-law won't notice."

"No, Mom said we're having mixed noodles tonight, so I'll save some for tomorrow."

He Xiaojie put the meat and steamed buns into her schoolbag and hid them in the drawer under the desk. From what she saw and heard, she learned the skill of being thrifty from Wang Taozhi.

Cooked food spoils slowly in winter, so she can have extra meals for the next two days, eating a steamed bun and half a bowl of braised pork a day. It’s so wonderful just thinking about it.

"Whatever you want."

He Ruixue stood up and said, "By the way, I won't be working tomorrow. Can you accompany me for a walk?"

When you're out there, two people are always more fun than one.

"Okay, it's so cold outside, you still want to go out?"
