Jiang Yanxu didn't have much of an appetite. He poked at the cabbage in front of him and lamented bitterly, "Good chefs these days either work in public institutions or state-owned restaurants. It's hard to even get a good meal."
When the master was around, many people asked him to perform rituals, and they were always treated to delicious food. He even complained that the food he packed back was not fresh, but now he can't even eat it if he wants to.
"So picky? What do you usually do? Do you cook for yourself?"
"No, there's a small cafeteria in the funeral home. We hired two aunties from the neighborhood to cook. Sometimes I eat with them, and sometimes I just come out for a bite. I muddle through three meals a day, right? How about you?"
"I eat in the company cafeteria. It's pretty good. At least there's meat."
"It's not easy to eat meat. I'll help you trap rabbits in the back mountain. They're everywhere. In the summer, they come to the cafeteria to eat cabbage. You can't catch them all."
"Okay, I won't be polite to you if I need you. Besides rabbits, what else can you catch? How about pheasants?"
"That thing is not easy to catch. You need to use a net. Pheasants don't have much meat. They don't taste good in soup. They are too dry if you stir-fry them. They are worse than rabbits."
"It's good to have something to eat. If you kill prey, contact me. I won't let you suffer any loss."
Jiang Yanxu nodded, "Okay."
Compared to the diners around them, the two of them ate more politely, and there was still a lot of meat and vegetables left at the end.
He Ruixue was taking out her lunch box to pack when she heard a young man and woman who were on a blind date at the next table arguing. Of course, it was mainly the man who was talking.
"Next time, be more discerning and help clear the table when you come to my house. My mom didn't bother to tell me at the time, so she told me after you left. She said you didn't know how to clear the dishes after eating, and you stood by and watched while she mopped the floor..."
What a shame! If you didn't have a job, you wouldn't be as good as the wife the neighboring family married from the countryside."
The woman threw down her chopsticks and said, "I haven't even mentioned your mother yet, and she has the nerve to speak first. I came to your house as a guest, how could she entertain me like this?
If I eat a little more, she'll want to snatch my bowl away, grumbling endlessly while eating the meat. What's wrong? If I really marry into your family, will I never be able to have a full meal in the future? "
"My mother didn't mean that. She had just experienced a famine and was really scared of starvation. She sold her blood to buy food for me and fainted from hunger several times."
As he spoke, the man rubbed his eyes and choked up, "My father passed away early, and it wasn't easy for my mother to raise us all these years. You should be more filial to her, just consider it a favor for my sake."
She gets frostbite on her hands every winter. Can you bear to watch her wash clothes with cold water? You have done these chores at home before. When you marry her, you should take care of her like your own mother.
The woman felt something was wrong and didn't know where to start, so her momentum weakened. "I know."
"There's also the issue of the betrothal gift. It's not easy for my mom to save some money. Our family has similar expectations for all of us. The wife we marry must have a conscience, regardless of anything else."
He Ruixue rolled her eyes and gently kicked Jiang Yanxu on the table. She said in a voice no louder than theirs, "My dad fell and you went to the hospital to take care of him these past few days. The doctor said he needs to turn over, but I can't move him."
"No, I have to go to work."
Jiang Yanxu received her signal and instantly understood her intention, then began to act smoothly, "Besides, he's your father, what does it have to do with me? Before you got married, you didn't treat your parents very well, but after you got married, you became a filial daughter?"
"Now you are my filial son to my parents, but before you asked me to spend money and effort, I was so stupid!"
"I won't do it. There are rules in the underworld. Every wrong has its perpetrator and every debt has its creditor. Whoever has done something difficult should make amends. You're just talking and expecting me to run myself to death. That's impossible. Even hiring a caregiver costs money, and they're not as considerate as me."
"After all, it's not about money. What did you say when we got married? You said you'd be filial to my parents. If it weren't for my dad, you wouldn't have the job you have now. Why didn't I see that you were an ungrateful person before?"
"That's not the case. What I want now is your attitude. Oh, when you need me, I'm your dad, and when you don't need me, I'm my dad. The whole world must obey you, and you can't take advantage of me, right? Don't I have parents to take care of me?"
Their quarrel gradually attracted the attention of most people. It was not for any other reason but that the appearance of this "young couple" was really eye-catching.
The man and woman at the table next to them heard something was wrong, especially the man, who felt as if some of his hidden thoughts were suddenly exposed to the sun, and that everyone around him was laughing at him.
His face turned pale, and he slammed the table and was about to stand up. Jiang Yanxu was faster than him and blocked his glaring gaze. "Alright, let's go back and talk."
He Ruixue glanced at him angrily, "Thank goodness you have this face, at least looking at it can calm me down. Otherwise, I would have married someone who is irresponsible, uncaring, and ugly. My life would have been really unbearable."
"You think I'm willing to do that? You keep talking about your dad all the time. Does he feed me or clothes me? Didn't I pay him back the money I earned from work? He keeps giving me a cold shoulder all day long, as if I owe him something in my past life."
The two of them walked away chattering, and the woman came back to her senses from the shock of Jiang Yanxu's beauty. She savored their conversation carefully, and looked at the blind date opposite her again, feeling disgusted.
This guy is even worse than the one just now. Not only does he have a lot of flaws, but he also has shifty eyes. He immediately made up his mind.
"I'm sorry, Comrade Wei, I'm still young and there's no rush to get married. Your mother is right, my parents do spoil me, but not to make me work like a slave in your house.
I understand your feelings, but I hope you can respect your future wife. Otherwise, life will not be easy. After all, no one can endure it forever. That's all I have to say. Let's not meet again in the future."
