Before he could even glance at Wang Guilan, he rolled his eyes and slammed to the ground, scattering dust everywhere.
Wang Guilan cursed and clenched her trembling hands, gripping the door panel tightly to prevent her legs from giving way and causing her to kneel on the ground, unable to get up.
He was also worried that he hadn't hit the kid hard enough, and that the brat might wake up and kill him.
He hurriedly staggered to his feet, grabbed the small knife used for cutting pork knuckles from the table, and frantically stabbed Sun Tiedan in the body.
A sinister smile spread across his face, and he muttered under his breath:
“Zhao Youcai, you’re not human. Take a knife and slowly stab him until he bleeds dry and tortures him to death.”
Zhao Youcai's house was more lively that night than during the day.
Some secretly formed groups to eavesdrop and chuckle outside Zhao Laosan's house, some were busy making merry in the bridal chamber, and others were busy snoring.
Zhao Youcai was different; he went to work on the farm accompanied by a chorus of snores.
Every now and then, I would be startled by a sound like muffled thunder, and I would snap out of it, sit up, and slap each of the people snoring particularly loudly.
You also have to check on which baby is sleeping restlessly from time to time, kicking off the blankets and covering them up again.
It wasn't that Zhao Youcai was particularly meticulous; he was just worried that these people would mess things up and turn the blankets onto the floor.
The room was just solid earth, no flooring or tiles, so if a blanket fell on the floor, it would get really dirty.
My family has been very busy lately, everyone's busy making money, so who has the manpower to wash clothes and take apart bedding?
They had no idea that they were about to encounter what could be called the biggest and most troublesome problem since they had transmigrated here.
It wasn't until noon the next day that Captain Qi, who was fast asleep on the kang (a heated brick bed) at Zhao Youcai's house, was shaken awake by his men with a bewildered expression.
"Captain Qi, something terrible has happened! Someone has died!"
Team Leader Qi jumped to his feet. "Who? Who's dead?"
As Captain Qi put on his clothes, he continued to ask, "Have you investigated? Was it poisoning? How many people died?"
The young policeman looked distressed. "The people in Zhaojiagou are all fine; not even a single one has caught a cold. The one who died was Sun Tiedan from Sunjia Village, the man who said yesterday that he didn't know what he was given away and that he was dragged away with a pork knuckle."
Team Leader Qi responded with an "oh," his face still very serious, but he wasn't as anxious as before.
He was more worried that the poisoning had caused deaths. If a lot of people really died because of rat poison, he would lose his job as the captain of the public security bureau.
Not to mention him, even the current director and deputy director can't be protected; they have to come out and take responsibility.
That's why he insisted on staying at Zhao Youcai's house last night; he was afraid that someone might be poisoned and not receive timely treatment, which could lead to serious problems.
Having learned some first aid techniques, I can't just do nothing and wait to be taken to the hospital and laid on a board.
Furthermore, hospital emergency treatment also requires following procedures. However, if the police are handling the case, these formalities can be completed after the emergency treatment is successful.
No one expected that the people of Zhaojiagou would pass away peacefully overnight, while the people of Sunjiacun would encounter trouble.
Before leaving with the police after getting dressed, Captain Qi made sure to leave two junior police officers and a doctor who had come from the hospital that morning at Zhao Youcai's house.
At least let the doctor examine everyone in the village; that would at least put people's minds at ease.
Moreover, he had come to understand Zhao Youcai's family quite well. They were all honest people, and if something went wrong during their family's celebration, causing panic throughout the village, they would feel guilty and uneasy.
When Captain Qi arrived at Sunjia Village with his men, the village's brigade leader took them to Sun Tiedan's house.
A number of villagers had gathered in front of Sun Tiedan's house to watch the spectacle, and Qi Dui's mouth twitched as he watched.
They're all incredibly bold, even joining in on things that end in death.
The police officers behind Captain Qi quickly set up a cordon and drove the villagers out of the cordon.
"Go do what you're supposed to do. Are you trying to obstruct official business by standing around here?"
The captain suddenly shouted, cutting off the junior policeman's words to send the man away.
The villagers left obediently, but their constant turning back and whispering to each other was really annoying to watch.
Stepping into the room, smelling the rust and blood emanating from it, Captain Qi rubbed his temples.
Sure enough, as soon as they entered, they saw a man lying silently on the ground, his clothes torn in many places and his body covered in dried bloodstains.
The people accompanying them dared not move, after all, the forensic doctor was still on his way.
There's nothing we can do about it; the town is too small, and there are only a handful of forensic doctors in the whole city.
All Qi could do was lead his team to protect the scene and wait for the forensic doctor to arrive.
The news of the death in Sunjia Village spread like wildfire, quickly reaching the ears of the villagers in Zhaojiagou.
When Zhao Youcai's family learned of this, they all frowned, a bad feeling creeping into their hearts.
We've seen many deaths in recent years; quite a few people have died from overwork or starvation.
But a perfectly healthy person just disappeared without a trace, even alarming the police. No matter how you look at it, there's something strange about this whole thing.
Especially since the dead man was one of the people who caused trouble in Zhaojiagou yesterday, Zhao Youcai felt that big trouble was about to happen.
This ominous feeling persisted until dusk, when finally a young policeman climbed onto Zhao Youcai's door.
"Comrade Zhao Youcai, please come with us."
Zhao Youcai pursed his lips and stood up without saying a word.
The children all stood up anxiously, but before they could say anything, Zhao Youcai gave them a reassuring look.
"When the police investigate a case, they always ask some questions. Don't worry, they won't wrong any innocent person."
Out of the corner of his eye, Zhao Youcai saw an unfamiliar policeman taking handcuffs out of his pocket, and his gaze turned cold.
"What's more, Captain Qi and so many factory directors stayed at our house last night, and they were all in the same room as me."
The young policeman knew that Zhao Youcai's last words were meant for him, so he didn't do anything that would make him look foolish and quietly hid the handcuffs back.
Zhao Youcai was also puzzled. He had already cultivated connections in the county, so there was no reason why this young policeman wouldn't know his status in the entire county.
But to still want to handcuff oneself, a "suspect," is neither legal nor reasonable.
Something's not right. This young policeman is acting strangely.
Zhao Youcai asked his questions directly, since he knew some of the police officers who came to take him to the police station.
"This police officer looks unfamiliar. Is he new here?"
The police officers in charge disliked those who lacked ability and were merely connected to the system, especially those who were parachuted in from other places or transferred from other departments.
