Chapter 13: The Farm Vegetables Have a Market

"There are still about 400 jin left."

Zhao Youcai's simple words startled the plump woman, causing her to gasp sharply.

About 400 jin!

What's this guy's background?

How many radishes and cabbages must have been planted!

To be honest, she couldn't possibly eat all that food by herself. Her eyes darted around, and she suddenly remembered someone.

“Brother, if you’re not busy, come with me to the textile factory across the street. My younger brother works there. A few days ago, their purchasing manager said that the textile factory also needs fresh vegetables.”

Zhao Youcai naturally wouldn't refuse. The vegetables grown on the farm are meant to be sold, and the more big customers the better!

As soon as the plump woman led Zhao Youcai out of the steel factory gate, she very considerately bought him a bottle of soda.

Soda is a rare commodity these days; it's only bought in small quantities during holidays like Chinese New Year when there are children in the family to share.

After all, they were good partners for long-term cooperation in the future, so Zhao Youcai naturally accepted the soda handed to him by the plump woman.

Zhao Youcai took a sip, and immediately a familiar taste filled his mouth. Although this stuff wasn't as good as the cola of later generations, it had a unique flavor in this situation.

This unpretentious nature suited the plump woman's temperament perfectly, and she naturally started talking.

"Brother, you grow vegetables really well. I used to grow vegetables when I was in the village, but they were all short and clumsy, not cut out for me."

Zhao Youcai smiled and said, "What's so enviable about farming? It just means you weren't born to toil in the fields. The job you're doing now is something that others can't do; you have to be capable. If my children and grandchildren had half your skills, I, this old man, would be living a life of luxury."

The plump woman was even happier after being praised.

She used to hear most that she was strong and healthy, and that she was a lucky woman who had money and leisure time and had married a good man.

It was the first time I'd ever heard someone praise her abilities so directly, and I felt incredibly comfortable and my mood improved even more.

"Don't worry, brother, my name, Zhao Yanfeng, is well-known around here! I can't guarantee anything else, but come with me to the textile factory today, and I guarantee you'll get a good price!"

Zhao Youcai raised an eyebrow. "You're also surnamed Zhao! Then we're practically family!"

The plump Zhao Yanfeng laughed heartily, "What a coincidence! We're all real relatives!"

This wasn't just idle talk; although Zhao Youcai and Zhao Yanfeng had only just met, the town was only so big, and they might really be related by blood.

The two of them are now trying to reconcile, so they've managed to get together with a bunch of relatives and friends, both familiar and unfamiliar, and have barely managed to renew this "distant kinship."

Although the two seemed to have hit it off immediately, Zhao Youcai knew that it was just polite business talk.

It's impossible that only steel mills are experiencing vegetable shortages; although textile mills are not as large as steel mills, they still have a considerable number of workers.

I guess this plump woman was being so polite because she was worried about selling all the vegetables to someone else.

Of course, it would be very beneficial for me to be on good terms with this plump woman, so I was happy to be polite to her.

The two chatted idly along the way and soon arrived at the entrance of the textile factory. The plump woman loudly approached the security post at the entrance and gently knocked on the window frame.

"Hey! Isn't this Director Zhao from the steel mill? What brings you here today?"

The gatekeeper chuckled and rubbed his bald head.

Zhao Yanfeng briefly explained her purpose.

The gatekeeper slapped his forehead, as if he had just remembered.

"Look at my memory! Our director spoke to me just a few days ago. I'll take you in now!"

Zhao Youcai followed the two men into the textile factory and went directly to the purchasing department office.

When the purchasing manager of the textile factory saw the plump woman, he quickly stood up with a smile and shook her hand several times.

After the purpose of the visit was explained, the purchasing director's face immediately lit up with joy.

He said excitedly, "Director Zhao, you are truly my benefactor! To be honest, I was just worried that the cafeteria didn't have any good food!"

This time, it wasn't just steel mills that received instructions from above; textile mills were included as well.

The purchasing managers of both factories faced similar problems and were under the same pressure.

What leader comes down to inspect the country and doesn't eat?

We can't expect the leaders to eat pickled vegetables with the factory workers!

If the factory were to entertain the leaders in that manner, it could forget about receiving any large subsidies beyond government funding.

After exchanging a few simple pleasantries, Zhao Yanfeng smiled and pulled Zhao Youcai, who was carrying a basket, over to her.

"This is the vegetable-growing expert I was talking about! The vegetables are all so fresh! So tender!"

Zhao Yanfeng showed the other person the cabbages and radishes she had brought in her basket, and sure enough, she saw an incredulous expression on the other person's face, and couldn't help but feel a smug look on her face.

Zhao Youcai touched his nose, thinking to himself that this was nothing.

If the farm shop unlocks more vegetable seeds in the future, just picking out any one of them would probably blow their minds.

The plump woman was naturally outgoing, and especially after getting to know Zhao Youcai, she even took the initiative to help him bargain with the textile factory director during their conversation, so Zhao Youcai didn't need to interrupt at all.

Zhao Yanfeng not only negotiated the purchase price for the cabbage and radishes, but also helped to raise the price by one cent.

The two purchasing directors sat down together and finalized the quantities of cabbage and radishes they each needed, totaling 300 jin (150 kg).

Zhao Youcai was thrilled to have secured two such large clients today.

As long as I can reliably sell vegetables to these two factories, I will most likely not be short of money again in the short term.
