Chapter 14 Eating meat to one's heart's content, life is getting better!

However, there's really nothing we can do about it.

After all, the vegetables I buy are not as fresh as those grown by others.

Zhao Youcai had no idea what strange things the other person was imagining, but he didn't care.

Now all he wants to do is go shopping! He wants to go home, open the farm, and plant vegetables like crazy!

It's a pity that there are too many people around and it's inconvenient now, otherwise Zhao Youcai would be preparing to plant vegetables right now.

However, considering that I might look dazed and scare people when I'm growing vegetables, I'd better not.

The two directors stood at the entrance of the textile factory with reluctance to see Zhao Youcai off.

Zhao Youcai, humming an off-key tune, walked toward the supply and marketing cooperative.

First, I exchanged the tickets I got today, spent some money to buy two jin of flour, one jin of rice, one jin of sugar, and one jin of a piece of pork belly with alternating layers of fat and lean meat, and put them in the basket.

They also checked the prices of common items in the supply and marketing cooperative, especially fabrics and cotton, and even finished clothes and shoes.

The tailor shop in Happy Town is almost unlocked, so it's definitely a good idea to check out the market prices first.

Having roughly determined the prices, Zhao Youcai glanced at the sky.

At this time, the brigade leader must have led the educated youth back. There wasn't anything they wanted to buy in town, mainly because they didn't have tickets and people wouldn't sell to them!

Seeing that it was getting dark, Zhao Youcai didn't waste any more time. He waited by the roadside for a long time and finally met a bullock cart that was going the same way. After saying some nice words, he managed to hitch a ride.

When Zhao Youcai arrived home, everyone in his family had already finished work and returned.

Seeing that Zhao Youcai's basket was full, as if he had bought a lot of things, they all opened their mouths wide.

"What are you looking at! Come over and lend a hand!"

Zhao Youcai had been carrying the basket for so long and was exhausted. After all, his old arms and legs couldn't take any more exertion.

The Zhao family's sons and daughters-in-law then seemed to wake from a dream and were about to go forward to greet Zhao Youcai when they saw a dark shadow sweep past them like a gust of wind.

The third son, Zhao Jianhua, ran up to Zhao Youcai, his face beaming with joy, shouting, "Dad, you're finally back! I missed you so much!"

As he spoke, he subtly took the basket containing the supplies from him.

Carrying the heavy basket, Zhao Jianhua's face was beaming with joy.

"Dad, you had a great trip to town! You bought so much stuff, where did you get the tickets?"

The others were also curious. They knew their own situation; they had no food or meat coupons, so even if Zhao Youcai had money, he couldn't spend it.

"Do you think I'm as stupid as you? Do you think I have money and can't spend it?"

Zhao Youcai snorted, "Don't worry about how I bought these things. As long as you work hard from now on, you're guaranteed to eat plenty of meat and fish."

His words drew everyone's attention, and they stopped asking where the items came from, instead staring curiously at the vegetable basket.

After seeing Zhao Youcai lift the floral cloth...

Everyone's eyes widened once again!

My goodness!

What did you buy?!

Not only were there grains, but there was also sugar and meat!

Although we eat in the production team these days, whether we can eat meat and how much meat we can eat depends entirely on how fast and how well we work each day!

Although all the Zhao brothers except the third brother were good at farm work, they were not among the best.

They could at most eat their fill, and occasionally get a piece of meat that had been stewed so many times it was almost falling apart, just to have a taste.

The third son was so excited that he picked up Zhao Youcai and spun him around three times. "Dad, you really didn't lie! You said you'd go to town to buy meat, and you really did!"

Zhao Youcai felt a sudden dizziness, closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, and slapped his unreliable third son, Zhao Jianhua, on the head.

"Are you trying to spin me to death? Put me down!"

Only then did the third son, Zhao Jianhua, remember his father's age, and he gently put Zhao Youcai down, feeling embarrassed.

Zhao Jianhua's head was buzzing, and the spot where he had been slapped was burning with pain, but none of this dampened his good mood about the meat he was about to eat.

Zhao Youcai looked around and saw that everyone was staring at him with bright eyes. He then waved his hand and directed his two daughters-in-law.

"Tonight, let's all have a good meal together! As long as you all live your lives well, you'll have plenty of delicious food in the future!"

It was unusual for the Zhao family's kitchen to be so lively. Zhao Youcai even personally scooped out the fine white sugar and divided it into several large bowls, dissolving it with hot water. Each person received a bowl.

The two daughters-in-law and the little granddaughter were flattered and overwhelmed as they accepted the bowls, their lips trembling involuntarily.

After all these years, can they finally have a bowl of sweet soup?

The eldest daughter-in-law gulped down the sugar water, tears of emotion flowing down her throat along with the sweet syrup.

The last time she drank sugar water was when she gave birth to the eldest grandson of the Zhao family, so many years ago!

I couldn't help but feel sorry for my second son's wife; she was so unlucky to have such delicious sweet soup and meat.

She throws tantrums and goes back to her parents' home at the drop of a hat. She hasn't come back for so long and just stays there. Isn't she afraid that her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law will complain about her?

The little granddaughter, holding a bowl bigger than her face, smiled and said thank you, Grandpa, to Zhao Youcai. She took a small sip, then looked up and giggled again.

Zhao Youcai felt a little hot in the corner of his eye. People in this era are so simple and honest; a bowl of sweet soup was enough to satisfy him.

I don't know what's making me so emotional here. I just told him to call me when the food is ready, and then I got up and went back to my room.

Unable to afford the upgrade fee for his breakfast stall, Zhao Youcai decided to invest all the money he earned today into the farm. He figured he'd be delivering vegetables to town tomorrow anyway, and he could upgrade the breakfast stall when he got back.
